UP Rain Alert: Heavy Rain Likely In 60 Districts Today, IMD Issues Warning For Next 48 Hours
Last Updated: In its latest forecast, the IMD stated that both eastern and western parts of the state will experience rain and strong winds over the next 48 hours According to the latest update from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), rain and thunderstorms are likely to continue across Uttar Pradesh during the last week of May. In its latest forecast, the IMD stated that both eastern and western parts of the state will experience rain and strong winds over the next 48 hours. On Thursday (May 29), rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in around 60 districts of the state. However, districts including Aligarh, Mathura, Agra, Hathras, Firozabad, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh, Prayagraj, Jaunpur, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Chandauli, Sonbhadra, and Ghazipur are likely to remain dry. During this period, strong winds are expected to blow at speeds of 30 to 50 kilometres per hour. Both eastern and western UP are expected to witness these weather conditions, which are likely to persist on 30 and 31 May as well. Professor Manoj Kumar Srivastava, a meteorologist at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), explained that the current weather changes are due to a cyclonic circulation and a western disturbance over the region. These factors have brought relief from intense heat and are likely to cause rain and thunderstorms in several districts. These conditions are expected to continue for the next 48 to 72 hours. Rain Recorded In Select Districts On Tuesday, light rain was recorded in Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar. However, other regions in the state experienced intense heat, causing discomfort for residents. Other cities, including Varanasi, Prayagraj, Sultanpur, Hamirpur, and Agra also recorded maximum temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, leaving people distressed due to the humid and oppressive weather conditions. UP Weather Today: IMD Predicts Thunderstorms, Rain In These Districts
Last Updated: Uttar Pradesh to see shifting weather with rain, storms, and strong winds in many districts. IMD warns of dust storms and lightning over the next 72 hours Uttar Pradesh is set to witness another significant shift in weather conditions. While some regions will experience storms and rainfall, others will face a brief respite, with dry, sunny spells returning. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an updated forecast, predicting a mix of weather across the state. Rainfall will bring relief in parts, while other areas will continue to feel the heat, especially during daylight hours. According to the IMD, dark clouds are likely to return to most parts of UP within the next 48 to 72 hours, accompanied by dust storms and moderate rainfall. Wind speeds of 30 to 40 km/h and lightning have also been forecast. Rainfall is expected in several districts, including Gorakhpur, Deoria, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Sant Kabir Nagar, Siddharth Nagar, Basti, Balrampur, Gonda, Shravasti, Bahraich, Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Rampur, Moradabad, Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, and Saharanpur. Mixed Weather In Lucknow And West UP In Lucknow, residents experienced slight relief from the heat on Monday, the second day of Nautapa, a traditionally scorching period. The weather remained mostly clear, though partial cloud cover may offer occasional respite. Humidity, however, is expected to rise due to easterly winds, which may lead to discomfort despite relatively mild temperatures. The maximum temperature in Lucknow on Monday is forecast to reach 38°C, with a light rain and thunder alert issued for some parts of the state. In Western Uttar Pradesh, Professor Manoj Kumar Srivastava of BHU noted that cyclonic circulation at 1.5 km above sea level is causing instability. As a result, light rain is expected in parts of western UP over the next two days. A more widespread weather system is forecast to become active towards the end of May. Rainfall Recorded In 20 Districts On Sunday, dark clouds covered many parts of the state, and around 20 districts reported rainfall, including Agra, Aligarh, Bareilly, Bijnor, Etawah, Meerut, Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, and Noida. Cloud movement and strong winds were also observed in Varanasi and Prayagraj. The IMD continues to urge residents to stay alert for changes in weather, particularly due to the risks of lightning, dust storms, and sudden rainfall. First Published: May 26, 2025, 13:06 IST

Mulching technique leads to rich yield of melons
1 2 Prayagraj: The mulching technique has proved to be a boon for farmers involved in production of watermelon and muskmelon in the Prayagraj region this summer season. Farmers have cultivated bumper crops of juicy watermelons (Saraswati) and muskmelons (Mradula, Boby, and Sarau) in Prayagraj, Kaushambi and Fatehpur districts using the technique that involves covering the soil surface with materials like organic matter or plastic to create a protective layer which benefits plant growth and soil health. Agro-expert Manoj Kumar Srivastava told TOI: "After digging out potato crops, the majority of farmers this year opted for watermelon and muskmelon cultivation in the region through the mulching method, and the technique helped them achieve bumper yield of the seasonal fruits." Farmers in the Prayagraj region cultivated watermelons and melons on around 1,500 beegha of land. These are not only smaller in size but also in the shape of a square using hybrid varieties of Taiwan seeds. Further, these varieties of watermelons and melons have a higher content of TSS (Total Solid Sugar) value. A farmer Ram Surat Patel said: "We cultivated seeds brought from Taiwan to yield a good amount of crop with limited resources. These small-sized watermelon and melon in round and square shapes are more in demand as they have a high TSS value of up to 14 to 15%." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo Farmers, however, claimed that they took technical guidance before cultivating hybrid varieties of watermelons and melons. Currently, hybrid varieties are being cultivated in Prayagraj, Mooratganj in Kaushambi and Khaga in Fatehpur district. A senior horticulture official said: "Through silver mulching, which is largely adopted by farmers in UP, MP, Maharashtra, Punjab, and other states, crops of seasonal fruits could be cultivated with a lesser amount of water. Crops of watermelon and melon are also being cultivated through the same technique in the region." However, the flip side of the story is that due to bumper crop production, the farmers are forced to sell their crops at lower prices this year.
