JU to get 70 more CCTV cameras

Kolkata: Jadavpur University will install 70 more CCTV cameras at 50 spots to secure the university's main and Salt Lake campuses, at an estimated cost of Rs 68 lakh. JU will also recruit 30 additional security personnel and two security supervisors. These decisions were taken at the executive council (EC) meeting on Monday. The Calcutta HC in June authorised the pro-VC to convene the meeting to discuss security-related matters in the absence of a VC. The court also asked the varsity to approach the higher education department for further release of funds for CCTV installation and other security measures. Sources said Webel Technology Ltd, a state govt undertaking, has provided the estimate. A section of teachers felt the necessity to install more CCTV cameras was heightened after education minister Bratya Basu was detained on campus by a section of students demanding campus polls on March 1. State nominee to EC, Manojit Mandal, a professor in the English department, said, "The main campus will have 50 more cameras at 30 spots while the Salt Lake campus will get 20 cameras." A professor present at the EC meeting said, "The CCTV cameras will be calibrated and fixed in such a way that they cover blind spots. JU will employ 30 more security guards. There are three shifts in which security personnel work for eight hours. It was decided that for each shift, 10 more guards will be employed. At present, JU has 78 permanent security guards and 33 private security guards." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
