Azeem named for mission up north, but not all's certain
PETALING JAYA: National sprint ace Mohd Azeem Fahmi has been named in Malaysia's 52-strong athletics squad for the SEA Games in Thailand this December. However, national head coach Manshahar Abd Jalil stressed that this does not guarantee the national 100m record holder's participation, as Malaysia Athletics (MA) are still in talks with him. Azeem has also been listed for two other events — 200m and 4x100m — and is among 35 athletes named in Category A, where all expenses will be fully covered by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM). Manshahar described the 21-year-old as an asset to the national contingent in their medal hunt at the SEA Games, but acknowledged that the 21-year-old has commitments to Auburn University's National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) schedule. 'Before leaving for Odisha in India recently, I met him personally with representatives from the National Sports Council (NSC). He told us he would be returning to the United States soon to meet his coach, Ken Harnden,' said Manshahar. 'We will follow up to determine the best approach to see if he can return to Malaysia for the SEA Games. Discussions are still ongoing and this will require agreement between the coach and athlete.'' On Sunday, Azeem underlined his class by winning the men's 100m gold at the Indian Open in 10.35s, with teammate Danish Ikftikhar Mohd Roslee taking bronze in 10.50s. Still, he has admitted to being in a dilemma over competing at the SEA Games, citing his NCAA calendar and newly commenced classes at Auburn University. He will also skip the Malaysian Open from Aug 29-31 in Kangar, Perlis. Two years ago, the Perak-born sprinter had also missed the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, as he had just begun his studies in the United States then.

Muhammad Azeem key for Malaysia athletics in 2025 SEA Games
NATIONAL sprinter Muhammad Azeem Fahmi remains a crucial asset for Malaysia's athletics squad ahead of the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand. National head coach Manshahar Abd Jalil confirmed the Perak-born athlete is listed for the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m events. A final decision on his participation will be made after discussions between Muhammad Azeem and his US-based coach. 'He is definitely one of the best assets,' said Manshahar after the SEA Games selection meeting at Wisma OCM. 'If Muhammad Azeem can participate in the Thailand SEA Games, it would be comforting.' However, his NCAA commitments with Auburn University may affect his availability. Manshahar noted that alternative plans are being considered, with the Malaysian Open serving as a key trial event. Danish Iftikhar Muhammad Roslee has been mentioned as a potential replacement sprinter. 'The list of the quartet has not yet been determined,' Manshahar added. The Malaysia Open, scheduled for August 29-31, will help finalise the relay team selection. Manshahar also highlighted Umar Osman's inconsistent performances in the men's 400m. The Malaysia Open will be a critical test for Osman's form ahead of the SEA Games. A total of 52 athletes, split into categories A and B, have been approved for the Games.

Manshahar may make return to coach SEA Games athletics team
PETALING JAYA: Former head coach Manshahar Abd Jalil could be set for a return to the national athletics set-up but a decision on his comeback is only expected next week. Malaysia Athletics (MA) recently held a strategic discussion with the National Sports Council (NSC), where one of the key proposals was to reappoint Manshahar on a six-month contract to prepare the team for the biennial Games.
