4 fake cops held for ‘extorting' money from driver
Koraput: Police arrested four persons late Friday night for allegedly posing as police personnel and extorting money from a vehicle driver at gunpoint near Kunduli on NH-26 in Koraput district.
Police said at 11:45pm, a vehicle loaded with ginger was intercepted by the accused, who assaulted the driver, threatened him with a firearm, and took away Rs 8,000. The miscreants then called the vehicle owner, demanding more money.
At that time, a patrol team from Pottangi police station spotted the vehicle parked in a deserted location. "On suspicion, our personnel approached the spot. On seeing police, the accused tried to flee but were chased and apprehended," said SP (Koraput), Rohit Verma.
The accused have been identified as Mantu Puria, Bijaya Takri, Subhakanta Nayak and Rama Kuladeep, all residents of the district. Police also recovered six mobile phones, a pistol, a car and a motorcycle.
The accused were produced before court on Saturday, the SP said.
