How to make the most of your trip to Wellington, NZ - come rain, hail or shine

HOW: New Zealand's newest public holiday, Matariki, combines remembrance and planning for the future with winter stargazing and feasting - all in homage to the Maori New Year. Head to the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, on Wellington's waterfront to get acquainted with its traditions and see the long-running Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War exhibition about World War I. Go to Sky Stadium to see the All Blacks in action and for international football. Stay handy at the Quest Apartment Hotels on Lambton Quay - it's less than a kilometre's walk to the stadium. In August, watch Sky Stadium transform into Beervana, a buzzy craft beer festival. If food, glorious food (and drink) is what you travel for, then visit the Wellington on a Plate website early to book Beervana tickets and your pick of the August festival's 100-plus events. A drag cabaret and a finger-lickingly delish four-course meal at Floriditas on Cuba Street are just for starters. Stay at Ohtel for easy access to the food offerings at Wellington's Harbourside Market, the city's oldest, held every Sunday. The four-storey boutique hotel looks out to Oriental Parade and is curated for those with finer tastes. Think: mid-century furniture and stunning New Zealand artwork throughout.

Matariki marked by community

Kakanui School held its annual Matariki night on June 19. Matariki marks the Maori New Year and is a time to remember those who have died, to celebrate the present with whanau and friends, and to look forward to the future with hope. Principal Ann Roughan said the Matariki celebration was "so special" as the entire Kakanui community was invited to the event. "Our Matariki celebration was about sharing stories, kai, culture, and strengthening the bonds within our school community — we all came together to celebrate Matariki, a time of reflection, renewal, and connection," she said. Ms Roughan said the children created art works that depicted Matariki, sang waiata and also presented the audience of family and friends with some Maori stick and string games, and videos they had created about Matariki. — APL

A fashionable celebration of cultures

Fashion brought together Māori and Indian culture at an evening celebrating Matariki in the Capital. The occasion, which marks the New Year for New Zealand's Māori people, begins when a special group of stars appears in the sky in June or July. Back in Delhi, the evening began with a fashion show, hosted by the New Zealand High Commission in collaboration with the Fashion Design Council of India and Education New Zealand. Student teams from both countries presented ensembles that meshed Māori traditions with Indian textiles. There was also a Māori dance by the group Ngati Koraha. 'This is a special occasion for us as we mark Matariki, the Maori New Year, here in India,' said New Zealand High Commissioner Patrick Rata. FDCI Chairman Sunil Sethi said, 'We are proud to support cross-cultural initiatives that inspire young talent to think global while honouring their roots.' Minister of State for External Affairs of India, Pabitra Margherita, was also there as the chief guest.
