Decades later, remains of 22-year-old WWII soldier from NJ identified

Nearly eight decades after he gave his life for his nation, the partial remains of a New Jersey soldier who had been declared killed in action in 1944 have finally been identified. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency has now accounted for U.S. Army Pvt. Roman Cherubini, a 22-year-old twin and World War II soldier from Bridgeton. Cherubini was serving with the 475th Infantry Regiment in the China-India-Burma Theater when he was killed. 4 Roman Cherubini (left) and his twin brother, Raymond, both fought in WWII. POW/MIA His remains were said to have been buried in at least eight different locations, including the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2022, the DPAA had his remains exhumed and tested. 4 Cherubini's remains were interred in at least eight different locations. POW/MIA Late last year, an identification was made using dental, anthropological and mitochondrial DNA analysis. The DPAA said Cherubini 'fought in a series of running battles against numerically superior Japanese forces in the jungles of Burma in 1944. The light infantry formation, known as Merrill's Marauders, was equivalent to a regular regiment in size and was specialized for jungle fighting behind enemy lines.' 4 Cherubini died fighting in the jungles of Myanmar. The Washington Post via Getty Images Merrill's Marauders entered Burma in February 1944 and 'began assaulting the supply lines of the Japanese 18th Division in the Hukawng and Mogaung valleys.' On May 17, the Marauders seized a strategic airfield near the village of Myitkyina with the help of two Chinese infantry regiments. Japanese forces in Myitkyina were finally routed on Aug. 3 after more than two months of grueling jungle combat. 4 Cherubini's death was covered in local papers. POW/MIA He died June 16, 1944, in the midst of the battle for Myitkyina, but the exact circumstances around his death are unknown. The remains of servicemen killed in that battle were buried in temporary cemeteries as well as isolated burial locations. 'Their mission complete, Merrill's Marauders were disbanded. They had marched 750 miles through the jungle and fought in five major engagements. Over two hundred of the Marauders were killed by disease and enemy action, and many were lost in the back-and-forth battles in harsh jungle terrain,' according to the agency.

Bishop Guilfoyle advances to State Championship after defeating Bishop Carroll

ALTOONA, PA. (WTAJ) — Bishop Guilfoyle is now one step away from repeating as state champions after the Marauders defeated Bishop Carroll 49-42 in the Class 1A semifinals. In a back and forth game the Marauders led 28-23 at halftime, but the Huskies came out on fire in the third quarter and opened the frame on a 10-3 run to take a two point lead. The contest then went to the fourth quarter tied at 33. Bishop Guilfoyle had ice in their veins in the fourth quarter and wouldn't be denied another trip to Hershey. Freshman Layona Williams opened the quarter with a pair of baskets to restore the Marauders lead and they eventually pushed the lead to eight points. Morgan Ruggery and Williams finished tied for the team lead with 14 points. 'It's amazing you start the season and this is kind of like the expectation,' said Ruggery. 'Like you want to get back here, especially when you came out here last year. So to be able to come back and do it again is really fun.' In the State Championship Game the Marauders will take on Linville Hill. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Primetime 585 Spotlight Team: Williamson girls track and field

WILLIAMSON, N.Y. (WROC) — The Primetime Spotlight team of the week is the Williamson Girls track and field team. The girls won their fourth consecutive sectional championship in class B3 by an incredible 62 points. 'They all contributed,' head coach Carl Comstock said. 'It starts in November and it goes all the way through. And everybody did what they needed to do. It's not a one-person thing. It's a 30 girl thing.' Madison Nuessle is one of the few seniors who have been a part of all four sectional championships. There's a good chance there will be five in a row because more than a third of the Marauders are juniors. 'It's amazing,' Nuessle said. 'I wish I could say they're not going to do it again next year without me, but they will. These juniors are crazy. I'm just glad I got to be a part of it every year. It's so nice just to be part of this little family.' Williamson dominated the 1,500 race walk by placing 1-4, earning the team 31 points alone in the race, with Faith Atwater winning with a time of 8:40.92 Williamson also has Hannah Governor, a three-time News 8 Primetime Elite Award winner who won the 1500 with a time of 5:06.50. The second-place runner was 34 seconds behind her!! Hannah also won the 3000 by 37 seconds and added another first-place finish in the 1,000 meters. Hannah's older sister Alexa was also an accomplished Section Five distance runner. That last name has become a target on the Williamson junior's back. 'There is some pressure because I know people are trying to race me in everything,' Governor said. 'It feels good because I definitely worked for it. My coaches are really supportive of everything.' The Marauders won the 4×200 and the 4×400 relays. In the field events, Madyson Storey easily won the high jump to earn another 10 points for her team. Congratulations to Coach Comstock and the Williamson girls varsity track and field team for earning the Class B3 Sectional Championship and the Spotlight Team of the Week! Marauders rally back, beat Penn Cambria in semifinals

ALTOONA (WTAJ) — Late free throws iced a wild District 6 semifinal win for Bishop Guilfoyle as the Marauders rally back to beat Penn Cambria Tuesday night, 76-68. The Panthers embraced it's mountain mentality early, going up 38-22 behind a 23-point night from senior Brandon Rabish. But unable to put Bishop Guilfoyle away, that lead slipped. The Marauders rallied to within four at halftime, and took the lead in the third behind a Nick Foor three as he capped off a 22-2 run. Foor led the Marauders with 20 points, and another triple but BG up 66-56 early in the fourth. But Penn Cambria did not go quietly. Rabish led Penn Cambria's last effort and got the Panthers within 3 in the final minute. But BG iced it at the line as the Marauders head back to the District 6 championship to face Forest Hills.
