(Philipp von Ditfurth/dpa via AP) Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt qualified for the Champions League on the last day of the Bundesliga season on Saturday, leaving Freiburg to be content reaching the Europa League. Dortmund clinched fourth place and the last for Champions League qualification with a 3-0 win at home over already-relegated Holstein Kiel, which had a player sent off after less than 10 minutes played. Advertisement It's a remarkable turnaround under coach Niko Kovač, who took over a Dortmund team languishing in 11th place in February. Dortmund won its last five Bundesliga games straight. Frankfurt stayed third with a 3-1 win in Freiburg, which dropped to fifth as a result, two points behind Dortmund. Freiburg had needed a win to qualify for the Champions League in place of Frankfurt. Mainz drew with Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 to qualify for the Conference League in sixth place, a point ahead of Leipzig, which missed out on European qualification after a 3-2 loss at home to Stuttgart. Bayern Munich, which clinched the title with two rounds to spare, finished the season with a 4-0 win at Hoffenheim in Thomas Müller's last Bundesliga game for the club. It was his 503th. ___ AP soccer:

Dortmund complete escape act to snatch top-four berth

Borussia Dortmund will play Champions League football next season after a 3-0 home win over a 10-man Holstein Kiel on Saturday completed an incredible late-season run. Sitting in 11th just seven weeks ago, Dortmund collected 22 of a possible 24 points in their last eight league matches, climbing up to fourth, past Freiburg who lost 3-1 at home against Eintracht Frankfurt. Advertisement Dortmund, who had not been in the top four since the end of matchday three in September, got off to an excellent start against their already relegated opponents when Serhou Guirassy converted a third-minute penalty. Knowing they needed a big win to guarantee a top-four finish, Dortmund's hopes looked even rosier just six minutes later when Kiel's Carl Johansson saw red for a last-man foul. Marcel Sabitzer added a second with a deflected low shot two minutes after halftime and Felix Nmecha made it three when he scored from close range with 73 minutes gone. Dortmund will be joined in the Champions League by Frankfurt, who came from a goal down to win at Freiburg, qualifying for Europe's top competition through league placing for the first time. Advertisement Freiburg, who started the weekend in fourth and needed to win to guarantee a debut Champions League spot, took the lead after 27 minutes when Ritsu Doan volleyed in. Frankfurt's Ansgar Knauff did his former club Dortmund a favour when he levelled things up just before halftime. Frankfurt added two goals in three second-half minutes through Rasmus Kristensen and Ellyes Skhiri to grab hold of the match and their Champions League fate. Freiburg fell to fifth and will play in the Europa League next season; they will be joined in the competition by the winner of the German Cup final between Stuttgart and third-flight Arminia Bielefeld. Advertisement Elsewhere, champions Bayern Munich finished the season in style, farewelling departing veteran Thomas Mueller in a 4-0 win at Hoffenheim. Harry Kane scored his 26th league goal of the year, winning the top goalscorer gong for the second straight season, with Michael Olise, Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabry also getting on the scoresheet. Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw at Mainz in Xabi Alonso's final match in the dugout. Last season's champions fell behind with 35 minutes played when Paul Nebel scored but Patrick Schick scored twice in five minutes after halftime to take the lead, while bringing his season tally to 21 goals. Advertisement Mainz's Jonathan Burkardt levelled things up from the spot. Steffan Bell's stoppage time goal was rubbed off for a handball but Mainz stayed sixth and sealed a Europa Conference League placing. RB Leipzig's poor season continued, losing 3-2 at home to Stuttgart to miss out on European football completely for the first time since their debut promotion in 2016. Heidenheim will play in the relegation playoff after a 4-1 home loss against Werder Bremen. Elsewhere, Union Berlin came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Augsburg, with Andrej Ilic scoring a brace. Bochum, who were relegated last week, bade farewell to the top flight with a 2-0 win at St Pauli, while Wolfsburg won 1-0 at Borussia Moenchengladbach. dwi/dmc

Bundesliga final day drama: Dortmund, Frankfurt reach Champions League; Leipzig miss out on Europe

The final day of the 2024-25 Bundesliga season was a wild ride as the race for Champions League qualification ebbed and flowed, minnows qualified for Europe and there were twists and turns galore. Of course, Bayern Munich were already confirmed as champions and 2023-24 champs Bayer Leverkusen finished in second. But below them Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund and SC Freiburg were involved in an incredible scrap for two Champions League spots, while there was also an intense finale for the Europa League and Conference League spots. Borussia Dortmund win to reach the Champions League Dortmund beat already-relegated Holstein Kiel 3-0 (goals from Serhou Guirassy, Marcel Sabitzer and Felix Nemecha did the damage) to reach the Champions League as Nico Kovac's side finished the season eight games unbeaten and won seven of those to finish in fourth. For most of the season Dortmund were well out of the top four but they rallied impressively to qualify for the Champions League and finished the job on the final day. That is a fine achievement from Kovac. Dortmund have serious momentum heading into the summer where they will play in the Club World Cup and then look to challenge Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen for the title next season. Freiburg, Frankfurt go-all out as Eagles win epic scrap for Champions League Things were looking so good early on for Freiburg as they took the lead against Eintracht Frankfurt and their fans were dreaming of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in their history. But Frankfurt had to win to guarantee their spot in the Champions League for next season and the Eagles soared back with a big goal right on half time from Ansgar Knauff making it 1-1, then Rasmus Kristensen and Ellyes Skhiri scored within two minutes in the second half to turn the game on its head as they won 3-1. Frankfurt ended up finishing third in the table, their highest Bundesliga finish since 1993. Freiburg were downbeat but finished in fifth as they had to settle for Europa League qualification. RB Leipzig miss out on Europe as Mainz rise to the occasion One of the biggest surprises was RB Leipzig losing 3-2 at home to Stuttgart as they missed out on Europe for the first time since becoming a top-flight club in 2016-17. Leipzig took the lead twice but Stuttgart roared back in the second half and even though Leipzig's home stadium will host the UEFA Conference League final next season, RB Leipzig will not be in it. Mainz qualified for the Conference League as they drew 2-2 at home against Bayer Leverkusen and they were excellent as they had multiple goals ruled out by VAR. Xabi Alonso avoided defeat, somehow, in his final game in charge of Leverkusen as the Mainz fans celebrated wildly at the final whistle. This is the just the fifth time Mainz have qualified for Europe in their history and the first time since the 2016-17 season, as the club which helped Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel make their names will fancy their chances of going far in the Conference League.

Dortmund and Austria without Sabitzer for four weeks

Borussia Dortmund and Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer will be out for around four weeks with a knee injury, his club said on Sunday. Dortmund had feared a longer lay-off. The 30-year-old will miss both Austria's Nations League play-off games against Serbia on Thursday and Sunday. He limped off during the 2-0 Bundesliga defeat by his ex-club Leipzig on Saturday having recently re-established himself as a starter under new Dortmund coach Niko Kovac.
