Gasification plant for solid waste at Sonsoddo on cards
Margao: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) at the council meeting on Friday approved a proposal to establish a 10-tonne gasification plant for solid waste treatment at Sonsoddo. The council, in effect, rejected a previous proposal for a 15-tonne biomethanation plant at the same location after a similar facility at the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) market failed to function smoothly. The Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA) has selected a Pune-based firm through a tendering process for over Rs 7 crore. However, councillors insisted on inspecting a functional plant before providing final approval. Municipal engineer Dipak Faldessai said that the plant's special characteristic was its ability to process mixed waste. With Margao municipality managing over 50 black spots generating approximately 5 tonnes of mixed waste daily, the facility could significantly streamline waste management operations, he said. Faldessai also said that substantial quantities of sanitary waste generated in the city must be sent to the biomedical waste treatment facility in Kundaim at considerable expense, suggesting the gasification plant could provide a solution to Margao's waste management challenges. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Better hearing starts here Amplifon Book Now Undo The council has also approved the establishment of a hydraulic multi-level parking system in Margao, three months after the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) invited expressions of interest for the Rs 10.5 crore project. This hydraulic system replaces the original Rs 10 crore reinforced cement concrete multi-level parking plan, which failed to materialise despite multiple tender attempts. Further, MMC chairperson Damodar Shirodkar informed the council that a committee headed by the district collector has identified five locations across the city for implementing pay parking. The council decided to proceed with increased house tax and other fees for the current fiscal.

Sonsoddo burial site gradient spurs worry in Muslim group
1 2 Margao: As the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) awaits the execution of a deed of exchange with the Confraria of the Chapel of Borda to resolve the encroachment issue at the proposed Sonsoddo kabrastan site, the Muslim community has raised apprehensions. The community has reservations about probable development restrictions due to the steep gradient of the location. The 30,000sqm site was acquired by the MMC in 2021 for the burial ground project. According to a recent letter from MMC chief officer Melvyn Vaz to the deputy collector, the council is seeking a deed of exchange following the discovery that 1,000sqm of the acquired land was encroached upon. The MMC, at the council meeting held recently, gave its nod for signing the deed of exchange. The high court, in its order dated June 24, 2024, directed that an equivalent area be provided as access to the acquired property. Subsequently, the Confraria submitted grants of easement — the legal right that allows one party to use another party's land for a specific purpose, However, the Muslim community's representative, Abdulmatin Daud Carol, has expressed serious concerns about the viability of the site for development. 'With a gradient as steep as 65-70%, would govt even allow construction on this slope?' Carol said. 'It is evident that the land falls under a no-development zone. Govt doesn't come clear on this, and the proposal is kept hanging.' The land was originally acquired through a 2010 resolution for all three communities but was modified in 2011 to serve exclusively as a burial ground for the Muslim community.

MMC invites bids for solar CCTV cams at black spots
Margao: In a move towards enhancing surveillance infrastructure, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has issued a notice inviting bids for the supply and installation of solar 4G CCTV cameras. These cameras are set to be installed at identified black spots across the town. This development follows MMC chairperson Damodar Shirodkar's recent announcement to have CCTV cameras operational at 16 identified spots before the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi. According to the notice inviting bids, the selected vendors will be responsible for the installation and configuration of the necessary equipment, including network video recorders (NVR), hard disk drives (HDD), and routers. Sources in the MMC said that the use of solar-powered 4G technology is expected to ensure uninterrupted surveillance capabilities, even in areas with restricted or no conventional power supply. Interested parties are required to submit their sealed quotations by July 15, with the opening of bids scheduled for the same day at the municipality's office. 'The installation of these CCTV cameras is expected to play a significant role in monitoring vulnerable spots, aiding in crime prevention, and enhancing the overall security framework of the city. The CCTV cameras are expected to serve more as a deterrent against crimes,' said an official of the civic body.

Margao to get CCTV cameras at 16 locations before Chaturthi
Margao: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is set to revive its CCTV surveillance network with the installation of cameras at 16 strategic locations before Ganesh Chaturthi. With this initiative, MMC aims to make a fresh attempt to tackle traffic congestion and crime in the city. MMC chairperson Damodar Shirodkar said that a five-member committee constituted under the chief officer has already identified the locations for camera installation. The committee, which met with RTO officials, police, and MMC representatives, has finalised the spots for the initial phase. While the MMC requires 100 cameras to provide CCTV coverage across the entire town, the civic body will begin with 16 cameras as part of the first phase. Ten cameras have already been installed around the Sonsoddo waste treatment plant. This initiative is a second attempt at establishing effective camera surveillance in Margao. The town first introduced CCTV cameras in June 2012 when the South Goa district administration installed a CCTV surveillance system from Holy Spirit Church to MMC square under the MP Local Area Development scheme. The system initially showed promising results, with traffic police successfully tracking down violators and issuing fines to vehicle owners based on CCTV footage. A dedicated cell was formed of traffic personnel to monitor CCTV footage and detect violations. Police said the CCTV surveillance system created a sense of deterrence, thus enabling curtailment of the crime rate. However, the exercise soon fizzled out. The surveillance network of 2012 turned dysfunctional largely due to a lack of maintenance. The absence of regular maintenance obligations from the vendor resulted in the system becoming irreparable, leaving Margao without effective CCTV surveillance for over a decade. 'The crime rate jumped steeply once the CCTV surveillance was out of order,' a senior police officer said. This time, however, Shirodkar said, all necessary safeguards will be built into the agreement to be signed with the vendors to prevent any kind of misadventure. The new initiative also includes plans to introduce pay-parking areas to further address traffic congestion issues plaguing the state's commercial capital.

Sonsoddo gradient: Muslim groups question kabrastan site feasibility
Margao: As the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) works to remove bottlenecks in its long-pending kabrastan project, Muslim community members are pointing to an existing consultancy report to question the feasibility of the 30,000sqm land acquired at Sonsoddo. They said only 2,500sqm would actually be available for burial purposes. The community's concerns are based on the consultant's survey report, which identified the difficult terrain of the acquired plot. It stated that much of the land has a gradient higher than 25% and is not developable under the current town and country planning rules and regulations. The consultant found that substantial hill cutting and land development would be required to make even the small usable portion suitable for burial purposes. According to the survey, only the lower southern section of the plot, measuring approximately 2,500sqm and 15m wide, could potentially be developed after extensive hill cutting. The steep gradient of the land has emerged as the primary constraint limiting the project's scope. Abdulmatin Daud Carol, a representative of the Muslim community in the kabrastan matter, said the access road leading to the proposed kabrastan has a steep 60-degree gradient. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Also, a mandatory 30m buffer zone would be required, constraining the usable area even more, he said. The MMC earlier decided to reserve 1,000sqm of the 30,000sqm land for the burial of persons of different faiths. On Wednesday, the MMC unanimously agreed to sign a deed of exchange for land with the parties concerned, which is required for an access road to the proposed kabrastan site. This followed a fresh survey report that revealed encroachments on the access road to the site. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
