Town of Vestal launches new website

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Town of Vestal has a new website that promises to be more attractive, more informative and more interactive. Supervisor Maria Sexton says she's fulfilling a campaign promise to improve the town's digital platform in order to boost transparency and encourage resident engagement. Sexton says the town contracted with a national firm called Apptegy to design and maintain the site. She says the new site makes it much easier for individual departments to get important information out to residents. Sexton says they're currently building out their individual pages. She says the website will also be able to host resident surveys and there's a place to submit feedback about the new design. Sexton says she reads every one of the messages that are sent and replies when able. 'That amount of communication, that ability to do that, is huge for me. I can directly hear how people feel about the website and what they want,' said Sexton. Along with the website, there's a new mobile app that residents can download and sign up for a variety of push alerts. Sexton says the first such push alert went out today regarding construction that is impacting traffic on Jensen Road. That information is also posted at the top of the website. Sexton says the site will also have video recordings of town board meetings as well as agendas and supporting documents. Student housing coming to Parkway, Vestal Supervisor opposing tax cuts

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Vestal Town Supervisor Maria Sexton is making residents aware of a pressing issue regarding a luxury student housing development on the Vestal Parkway. In 2023, it was announced that Aptitude Acquisition, LLC proposed a 360,000 square foot complex for the current site of the Quality Inn and Suites at the intersection of Bunn Hill Road and the Parkway. The development would contain almost 200 upscale apartments and amenities. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025 and will be completed in 2027. According to sexton, the developer applied to the Broome County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) for a PILOT program, requesting a tax abatement. If approved, the PILOT would freeze taxes for two years, then substantially abate taxes for the following twenty years. Hotel could make way for student housing on Parkway A public hearing was held on Monday regarding the proposed PILOT. Sexton spoke on behalf of the Town Board and opposed the PILOT agreement, which would give the developers a 22-year tax break. According to Sexton, under the PILOT, the project would have full income from the luxury apartments and commercial space beginning in 2027 but would continue to receive a substantial tax cut for the following 19 years. Sexton says if the PILOT is approved, Vestal residents and businesses will pay more taxes than they need to. The IDA will decide on March 19 whether to give the PILOT to the development agency.
