Fecal bacteria health advisory lifted at Nye Beach on Oregon Coast
The Oregon Health Authority on July 9 lifted the health advisory for Nye Beach in Lincoln County. The health advisory was issued July 2 due to fecal bacteria in ocean waters. Follow-up tests taken by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality showed lower bacteria levels that no longer pose a higher-than-normal risk, according to the Oregon Health Authority. 'Officials recommend staying out of large pools on the beach that are frequented by birds, and runoff from those pools, because the water may contain increased bacteria from fecal matter,' OHA said. For more information, go to the Oregon Beach Monitoring Program website at call 971-673-0440, or call OHA toll-free information line at 877-290-6767. Nehalem Bay State Park on Oregon Coast to open camping reservations for summer
Nehalem Bay State Park will reopen most of its campground on July 1 after a seven-month construction closure that started in November 2024. Reservations will be available starting at 6 a.m. June 27. The new improvements done to the campground mostly include new electrical and water lines. Other improvements to Nehalem Bay State Park campground include: Adding a restroom/shower building to serve increasing visitation and provide more accessible facilities (adult changing table for visitors with disabilities). Adding an accessible restroom and accessible campsites to the horse camp. Adding hose bibs to horse camp sites. Renovating and adding additional accessible campsites and paths. Repaving the main entrance road. Adding traffic calming features to the park entry road from the Garey Street entrance to the airport intersection. Adding a new day-use fee station near the airport intersection. Loop trails D, E and F will also open on July 1. Loops A, B and C will open in about a month to give crews enough time to finish a roof and accessibility improvements for the yurts. 'We're excited to welcome visitors back to the campground in time for the Fourth of July holiday," park manager Ben Cox said. Money for the project came from $50 million in general obligation bonds approved by the 2021 Oregon Legislature. Mariah Johnston is an outdoors journalism intern at the Statesman Journal.
