Calgary border agents seize 30 kg of drugs from Winnipeg traveller's luggage

A Winnipeg resident was caught allegedly trying to smuggle drugs onto a Calgary flight bound for Japan on June 23, 2025, the CBSA said. (Supplied) The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has arrested and charged a Winnipeg resident in connection with a significant drug seizure at the Calgary International Airport last month. The CBSA says its officers were inspecting luggage on outbound flights when they came across a questionable piece of baggage destined for Japan. Upon further investigation, agents found 30 kilograms of methamphetamine inside the luggage. The bag's owner had already boarded the flight, so CBSA officers entered the plane, arrested and removed the individual without incident. Mariane Lee, 18, of Winnipeg was arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of exporting a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and attempting to export prohibited, controlled or regulated goods. The CBSA said this seizure illustrates the hard work its officers put into their jobs every day. 'Through our key partnerships with the RCMP and the Calgary Police Service, the CBSA works to disrupt those attempting to smuggle illegal narcotics and hold them accountable,' said Janalee Bell-Boychuk, regional director general of the CBSA's Prairie Region. Lee is scheduled to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on Monday.
