Carlsbad moving forward with planned traffic circles in Barrio neighborhood

CARLSBAD, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — The City of Carlsbad is moving forward with its plan to put five new traffic circles at several key intersections in the Barrio neighborhood in an effort to improve traffic safety and walkability for residents in that area. The plan is moving forward after the Carlsbad City Council approved at their meeting on March 4 the plans, specifications and authorization to bid for the Barrio traffic circle project. Torero and his team will gather more community input to help shape the public art design concept in early 2025. Crosswalk striping improvements at the existing 4-way stop will be taking place at Oak Avenue and Roosevelt Street. After phase 1 was approved last week by the City Council, the next steps for the project include relocating and replacing aging water and sewer utilities to comply with current standards before construction on the traffic circles begins. The project is part of the Village and Barrio Master Plan, which was approved in 2019, and aims to discourage speeding and improve safety in the residential neighborhood. The City also noted that based on parking studies that were conducted, the traffic circles are not expected to impact parking availability in those areas. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
