Special tribute highlights Mark Cavalier Memorial Rocket Invitational
LOWELLVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – Lowellville's Nate Yon and Cardinal Mooney's Abigail Markey took home first place in the boys and girls 1600-meter run at the Mark Cavalier Memorial Rocket Invitational on Thursday.
The winners of the 1600m run are given special recognition in honor of Cavalier, a 1980 graduate of Lowellville who was tragically killed at the age of 26 along with his 2-year-old son when struck by a runaway vehicle.
Cavalier still holds the Lowellville Track 1600 meter record at 4:23.30 and qualified for the State Meet twice, which included a 3rd place finish in the 800m.
In total, seven local schools (Lowellville, Springfield, Crestview, Youngstown East, Cardinal Mooney, Campbell and the Academy of Urban Scholars) competed in this year's meet, which featured 12 running and four field events.
