Many leading managed care organizations, Blues plans, regional plans, and multiline carriers compete in the Medicare Supplement space. Highlights Include: MFA's assessment of standardized plan type preferences for 2024 found Plan G remained the most popular plan type, enrolling approximately 5.7 million members. Approximately 4.5 million Med Supp members were enrolled in Plan F and accounted for 30% of the market in 2024. Medicare Supplement plans collectively earned approximately $37 billion in premiums and paid out $31.3 billion in claims during 2024. The aggregate loss ratio (incurred claims as a percentage of earned premiums) was 84.4% as of December 2024. MFA compared membership between 4th quarter 2024 with 4th quarter 2023 to provide greater insights into enrollment trends for the Individual, Group, ASO, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid insurance segments. As of December 31, 2024, approximately 319 million people received medical coverage from U.S. health insurers. This number is up over 271,000 members from a year ago. Between 4Q23 and 4Q24, membership for the Individual market gained approximately 4 million more members. The Medicare Advantage market also experienced a membership increase with 1.8 million new members, representing a 5.6% growth, from 4Q23. The Employer-group risk and Employer-group ASO (administrative services only for self-funded plans) segments provide the largest sources of coverage in the industry, however, while Employer-group ASO saw a 1.5 million increase of enrollees, the Employer-group risk market experienced a -2.9% year-over-year membership decline.
