Class of 92's promotion hopes ruined by former team-mate after final day draw drops them out of the play-offs

CLASS of 92-owned Salford City's promotion hopes were dashed by a familiar face as they failed to beat relegated Carlisle United. Former Manchester United player Mark Hughes' side went 2-0 up in 17 minutes, forcing visitors Salford to mount a comeback that they couldn't quite complete. 2 This meant the Manchester team finished the day one point away from Chesterfield who beat Accrington Stanley away from home to claim the final play-off spot in League Two. Goals from Salford's Cole Stockton and Hakeeb Adelakun cancelled out Carlisle's Stephen Wearne and Matthew Dennis. But it could have been worse as Matty Young managed to force a brilliant save to deny the hosts late on. Carlisle were relegated before the game kicked off with Hughes, who joined on a rolling contract in February, unable to prevent their slide. While the Red Devils-owning Salford had been looking upwards towards promotion, the one at the helm of Carlisle might be looking in the other direction. Hughes has said, despite managing Premier League clubs previously, that he is open to following his team down to the National League. The Welshman said: "I have no ego. This has been a tough challenge but one I'd still be up for, so we'll see." He took charge with 18 games to go and five points adrift at the bottom of League Two. Since being taken over by former Manchester United players Nicky Butt, Phil Neville, Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes in 2014, Salford have gone from strength to strength. In pursuit of the Premier League, the club climbed to the fourth tier from the eighth in only five years. The draw today will add to Salford's stalling progress as they are forced to wait another season to reach League One.

Home comforts and travel sickness - have your say on Newport's yo-yo form

Newport County are back at home this weekend, which will be a relief for when it comes to playing at Rodney Parade this season, the Exiles have shown play-off form. Their 33 points picked up on their own patch is only bettered by the League Two's top four sides of Bradford City (48), AFC Wimbledon, Walsall (both 40) and Port Vale (36).The problem is for manager Nelson Jardim, their away form has been the stuff of relegation campaigns - with no League Two side picking up fewer points than County's unfortunate means 72% of Newport's total tally has been earned at Rodney latest attempt to stop the rot on the road ended in a 1-0 defeat at Grimsby at the weekend, meaning four successive away means it will be a welcome return when play-off hopefuls Notts County arrive in south Wales this weekend, before Bromley make it back-to-back home fixtures on Newport's next attempt to get it right will be at Mark Hughes' Carlisle on 5 April, still desperately trying to climb out of the relegation says he has tried tweaking the routine to get it right away from home, but what do you think the reason is for the difference? Walsall won't 'underestimate' bottom club Carlisle

League Two leaders Walsall have vowed not to underestimate the backmarkers, Mark Hughes' Carlisle United, in Tuesday night's 'bottom v top' meeting at Brunton Park. The Saddlers have won only three of their last 10 league games - to see their advantage at the top cut to four points, following Saturday's home defeat by Swindon Town. "Everyone wants us to lose," Saddlers midfielder Liam Gordon told BBC Radio WM. "It was their cup final and it will be Carlisle's on Tuesday night. "But we know to never underestimate the teams at the bottom, as we're fighting for two different things. "As long as we stay together, then something special is about to happen. "It's always about the next game. Saturday is all forgotten about if you go and get three points on Tuesday night - and we're lucky we have a quick to chance to put it right. "I don't know who created Tuesday night at Carlisle. We'd rather it was a Saturday game but we have to play every team in the league and it is what it is. "There's no negativity. We're all it together. We all believe in each other and we're all pushing together. We've just got to be more ruthless in front of goal." Walsall have found goals harder to come by since teenage top scorer Nathan Lowe's return to parent club Stoke City in early January - but they did win 2-0 on their last long haul up the M6 to Carlisle's fellow strugglers Morecambe just nine days ago, with second-half goals from Taylor Allen and Jamie Jellis against 10 men. Carlisle, then only second bottom, were in the middle of a nine-game winless run when they went to Bescot Stadium in late October and on-loan Lowe scored after just two minutes to set Walsall, then only second top, on their way to a 3-1 win. But, after the shock of their second managerial change of the season, on 3 February, just after previous boss Mike Williamson had brought in a new team during the January, there are already signs of a revival under Hughes. The Welsh legend began with two defeats, but two successive goalless draws at home followed by a 1-0 victory in last week's all-Cumbrian clash at Barrow has at least offered hope. "Three games is a decent run," Hughes told BBC Radio Cumbria. "But we need to get back-to-back wins if we can. That would help us immensely. "I told the lads they need to remember that emotion of winning and now we need to feel it again. "Yes, it's a big game to come, but then every game from now until the end of the season is important. And we are managing games better." Opposite number Mat Sadler says that where the two teams are in the table is immaterial. "It's just about us attacking the next game," he told BBC Radio WM. "We just need to focus. You want to pick up points from every game and I don't put more relevance on one than another. "The table doesn't have an effect on the game. It's not about what anyone else does." Having said that, if Walsall do slip up again and Hughes' former club Bradford City win at home to Cheltenham, then the Saddlers' lead, which stood at 12 points when they lost Lowe, will be down to just one point.
