Your blood holds a lot of secrets. Some you find out too late. Dr. Mark Hyman co-founded Function Health, a personalized health testing platform, to protect against that outcome. 'Health care is missing the boat on a lot of really important things,' says the preventive medicine guru, who founded the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. 'There are things you can manage yourself that will help you feel better and live longer.' For $499 per year, Function Health customers get two rounds of testing: an initial assessment with more than 100 blood tests, and then three to six months later, a follow-up including 60-plus retests to see how your numbers are changing. The biomarkers that are tested offer a status update on heart, thyroid, metabolic, kidney, and liver health, along with essential nutrients, heavy metal exposures, and more, far exceeding the basic panels most primary care doctors stick to. While no treatment guidance is provided based on results, Function members receive personalized insights that flag what to follow up on, in addition to suggested dietary tweaks and supplements to consider. Some doctors believe handing over that much data to patients is a slippery slope: Subtle changes or irregularities in the biomarkers Function tests don't always mean anything, but could lead members down a rabbit hole of additional (costly) testing or into full-blown health anxiety. The Function team argues it's necessary to create a holistic view of well-being. 'The average doctor doesn't think about how to create health,' Hyman says. 'They think about how to treat diseases. Unless you're empowered with your own health data, and the knowledge and information about what to do with it, you're in a health care system that's waiting around.' Function Health, he says, offers a better approach: 'You become the CEO of your own health.'

This one drink before 11pm could boost muscle growth while you sleep

Why casein? How to incorporate it? Imagine sipping on a drink before bed that helps your muscles grow while you catch some Z's. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, it's not just wishful thinking—science backs it Dr Mark Hyman, took to Instagram to share insights from a study. "Your body is hard at work repairing and rebuilding even while you sleep.A clinical study found that consuming 40g of casein protein 30 minutes before bed was fully digested and absorbed, sustaining elevated amino acid levels throughout 7.5 hours of sleep. This extended the window for muscle repair and enhanced overnight recovery," he has posted on the social media studies have shown that consuming about 40 grams of casein protein roughly 30 minutes before hitting the sack can significantly boost muscle repair and growth during sleep. Casein is a slow-digesting protein found in dairy products, and it's been a go-to for athletes aiming to maximize their other proteins that digest quickly, casein takes its time, releasing amino acids steadily over several hours. This slow release is perfect for overnight muscle recovery , ensuring your body has a constant supply of the building blocks it needs to repair and grow muscle study highlighted that participants who consumed 40 grams of casein before bedtime experienced increased muscle protein synthesis throughout the night compared to those who didn' means their bodies were more effectively repairing and building muscle while they slept. 5 healthy superfoods that will probably see prices skyrocket under Trump's tariffs

Consumers are likely to bear the brunt of President Donald Trump's new tariffs, say economic experts—and healthy eaters who love stocking up on antioxidants and healthy fats at the grocery store may be among those to feel the effects hard. While it's impossible to know how much the import tariffs will affect prices, experts say that there are plenty of clues. Below are some superfoods likely to soon cost much more than usual—and they weren't exactly cheap to begin with. The top sources of olive oil are in the European Union—particularly Spain, Italy, and Greece—which is being hit with a 20% tariff. 'Olive oil prices have gone through the roof,' food industry analyst Phil Lempert told NPR. 'They're going to go even higher.' That's too bad, because this is a healthy fat with a slew of health benefits—including just for the basic fact that it's a plant-based oil, which a recent analysis found could lower your risk of total, cancer, and cardiovascular risk mortality if used in replace of butter. Olive oil—specifically unprocessed or cold-pressed—is also a great source of phytosterols, which are natural plant compounds that help lower cholesterol naturally. Other well-documented health benefits of olive oil include that it's rich in healthy monounsaturated fats and antioxidants, which may reduce risk of chronic disease, and that it has anti-inflammatory properties. A staple of healthy Mediterranean diets, the oil has also been shown to help lower blood pressure and reduce risk of oxidative stress. Longevity expert Dr. Mark Hyman, for one, makes sure to consume olive oil daily. 'You need to make sure you get lots of good fats,' Hyman previously told Fortune, 'and olive oil is a great way to do it.' Nuts in general are also excellent sources of those cholesterol-lowering phytosterols, which makes them a great snack to enjoy by the handful (and something else Mark Hyman enjoys daily). They are also considered to be an anti-inflammatory food, rich in antioxidants and helpful for reducing oxidative damage to your tissues. Almonds, in particular, are great sources of vitamin E, which can help prevent skin cancer—as can Brazil nuts, as they are rich in the antioxidant selenium. Unfortunately, the top sources of nuts are the heavily tariffed Vietnam (46%), Côte d'Ivoire (21%), Brazil (10%), and Thailand (36%), so prices are expected to rise, said Lempert—with cashews, pecans, and macadamia nuts likely to see the biggest hikes. The wonders of berries, including raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries, are vast—starting with the fact that they are rich in flavanols, which have been shown to help prevent short-term memory loss. They are also excellent sources of vitamin C, which can help human skin cells repair themselves after oxidative stress and therefore help prevent skin cancer, and they are anti-inflammatory foods which can boost your memory, mood, and sleep quality when eaten regularly. Then there are the antioxidants and phytochemicals, which can 'activate longevity pathways,' as Hyman previously told Fortune. Lempert expects fruits, in general, to get more expensive, as top sources include Mexico and Canada, both being hit with 25% tariffs, and Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Peru, which are all seeing 10% tariffs. Mexico actually supplies 60% of the fruit in the U.S., including strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Remember the great avocado shortage of 2022, which drove prices of the creamy, healthy fruit to new heights? Get ready for a similar situation, as Mexico, with its 25% tariffs, is also the source of 60% of these for the U.S. That's a bummer, because not only are they versatile and delicious, avocados are healthy fats that are great sources of phytosterols that can help lower your cholesterol and reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. They are also an excellent source of plant-based oil, which can lower your risk of death from cancer or heart disease. Brace yourself, chocolate lovers: Top U.S. sources include Côte d'Ivoire (21%) and Ecuador (10%), which are seeing 21% and 10% tariffs, respectively. And these come on top of "serious increases in cocoa beans for probably the past two or three years because of the weather and the political climate in … Africa,' Lempert explained. That's bad news not only for lovers of rich desserts, but for those who rely on dark chocolate as a source of magnesium to reduce cortisol levels, magnesium, copper, and polyphenols and flavonols, which operate as antioxidants. I tried Function Health: How one platform helped me better understand my body

As a busy mother and founder, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to make time for your health. Health checkups tend to fall to the bottom of the list between work, family, and personal commitments. That's why I was intrigued when I heard about Function Health, a platform designed to empower individuals with comprehensive health insights and biomarker tracking. Could this be the proactive health tool I've been looking for? Here's my experience with Function Health—and how it has already impacted how I approach wellness. When Dr. Mark Hyman, founder of Function Health, explained that our healthcare system focuses more on managing illness than preventing it, it struck a chord with me. Chronic conditions are on the rise, and too many health issues are only caught when it's too late to do anything but manage symptoms. Function Health aims to change this with a personalized, prevention-focused approach. An estimated 80% of women suffer from some hormone imbalance, leading to symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, hot flashes, persistent weight gain, hair loss, pelvic pain, fatigue, and more. Dr. Hyman told me, 'Function is dedicated to changing this narrative by giving women the whole picture of what's going on in their bodies so they can discover underlying deficiencies or issues that could be impacting their reproductive health.' With a simple annual membership fee of $499 (Motherly readers get a discount with code MOTHERLY), Function Health offers access to over 100 lab tests (five times more than a typical checkup!). These tests cover hormones, metabolic markers, heart health, and even reproductive health—key areas many mothers, like myself, often worry about but rarely get thoroughly tested. The platform also promises actionable insights from top doctors, plus tools to track your health over time. As someone who thrives on data and actionable advice, I was eager to try it out. Related: As women, we are all 'hormonal': It's time to reclaim the narrative Getting started was refreshingly simple. Function Health's onboarding process is seamless, integrating scheduling for lab work through Quest Diagnostics directly into the platform. After signing up, I was able to book a convenient appointment online. The lab visit itself was quick and professional—there were no kits to manage at home, just a straightforward blood draw and urine sample handled by Quest Labs. Within a couple of weeks, my results appeared on my personalized dashboard. Even better, a clinician followed up with a detailed explanation of my results, biometrics, and actionable steps based on the findings. One feature that immediately caught my attention was the biological age calculator, which estimates your body's age based on key biomarkers. I was thrilled that my biological age was 11 years younger than my calendar age—a gratifying reminder that my dedication to prioritizing my health is paying off. However, the clinician report also highlighted some areas for improvement. Specifically, my results showed elevated LDL particles and cholesterol, which are markers for potential heart health issues. The report emphasized the importance of adopting heart-healthy habits, including: A diet rich in healthy fats like those found in avocados and nuts Regular physical activity, including cardio and strength training This actionable guidance felt empowering rather than overwhelming. It gave me a clear starting point for making small but impactful changes. I've previously explored tools like Prenuvo, which offers detailed whole-body scans for early detection of potential health issues (read about that experience here). Function Health is the perfect complement to that approach, focusing on lab-based insights while empowering you to take action between doctor visits. For mothers, particularly those juggling careers and families, Function Health offers insights into key health concerns, including hormone imbalances and stress management. The platform's female health panel includes reproductive hormones like estradiol, FSH, and AMH—offering invaluable context for navigating fertility, postpartum recovery, or menopause. Related: 8 productivity strategies for moms who are stressed about doing it all Function Health isn't a replacement for your doctor—but it's an incredible complement to traditional healthcare. The data can be shared with your provider, helping you become a more informed and proactive advocate for your well-being. For me, the experience has been empowering. Seeing my biological age affirmed the positive impact of my health priorities, while the guidance on my heart health gave me a clear path forward. If you've ever felt like healthcare happens to you rather than with you, Function Health might be what you need. If you're considering Function Health, here are a few tips: Use the Motherly discount code. Sign up with code MOTHERLY to get a discount on your annual membership. Identify your health goals. Whether it's improving energy, managing stress, or understanding hormonal changes, knowing your priorities can guide you. Review your results with your doctor. Function Health's insights are actionable, but your doctor can help put them in the broader context of your medical history. Make incremental changes. The platform suggests tweaks to your diet, supplements, or lifestyle—start small to build sustainable habits. Function Health is a reminder that self-care isn't selfish—it's essential. And as mothers, investing in our health isn't just for us—it's for the people who count on us.
