Cricket stars past and present shine at Hadleigh's international day

A WHOLE host of past and present cricket stars shone at Hadleigh & Thundersley's annual international day. An entertaining 20 over clash ended with the PCA England Masters beating their hosts by 12 runs. And club chairman Kevan Jenkinson was delighted with how the day went. 'It was a fantastic event which allowed us to showcase cricket and our club within the community,' said Jenkinson. 'It also allowed us to highlight our new training facility and to promote and recruit new members 'We had nearly 400 people in the marquee and probably close to 1,000 spectators around the ground. 'It was a really good game too.' The PCA England team contained a number of ex internationals including Adam Hollioake, Alex Tudor and Mark Ramprakash alongside current Essex skipper Tom Westley and bowler Jamie Porter. The PCA side were put bat first after losing the toss and went on to score 253/3 with Owais Shah top scoring with 127 from 65 balls. Fellow opener Ali Brown made 95 before retiring meaning 241 was put on for the first wicket. Louis Poynter (2/53) and Ethan Rogers (1/29) took the wickets for Hadleigh who then fell just short in reply after scoring 241/4 from their 20 overs. Jack Sinfield led the way with 86 for Hadleigh while Kian Vapiwala hit 66 not out but it was not enough to prevent a narrow defeat.

Doesn't reflect well on Ben Stokes' team: Former England cricketer Mark Ramprakash on handshake row

Manchester: Former cricketer Mark Ramprakash was critical of India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and England players' confrontation on the final day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. In the final moments of Day 5, drama unfolded after India fought with every ounce of strength to keep the series alive courtesy of Ravindra Jadeja's (107*) and Washington Sundar's (101*) gritty 203-run unbeaten partnership. With the draw looming large, England captain Ben Stokes went to the Indian pair to offer his hand to call the end of the contest. With Jadeja on 89 and Sundar on 80, the southpaws refused to accept it. Shortly after the drama, England bowled, tossed up, and delivered through Harry Brook, and Jadeja dispatched the ball for a maximum to bring up his fifth Test century. Mark gave his take on the entire exchange of words and felt it didn't reflect well on Stokes and his team. He even questions if England stood in India's place, what course of action would they have chosen? "You have to wonder if England had a player on 90 not out, would we have continued. We hear about England players being very proud on being on the honour boards at Lord's and other grounds because those milestones are huge achievements. I can understand where India were coming from," Mark told Sky Sports Cricket. A statement from Stokes was caught on the stump mic as he said, "Jaddu, do you want to get a Test 100 against Brook & Duckett?" Jadeja responded to the English skipper's comment and said, "What do you want me to do, just walk off?" Zak Crawley, who stood close to the crease, chipped in, saying: "You can, just shake your hand." "The stump microphone and words don't reflect well on Ben Stokes' team, who, let's be fair, are doing a fantastic job of reinvigorating Test cricket. They are playing wonderfully well. The cricket has been on such high class that it is a shame to dwell on it," he added. After Washington brought up his maiden Test hundred, the match eventually ended as players walked back. India head coach Gautam Gambhir was questioned about the incident after the game, and he clarified his stance with a simple reply. "If someone's batting on 90 and another on 85, don't they deserve their centuries? Would England have walked off if their own players were close to milestones? No. Our boys weathered the storm. They earned those tons. We're not here to please anyone," Gambhir told reporters at the post-match press conference.

Mark Ramprakash believes Jacob Bethell's test match career can follow Brian Lara's

Mark Ramprakash claims Jacob Bethell has a bright future for England but he will have to wait for an extended run at Test level, just like West Indian great Brian Lara. The Warwickshire all rounder missed out on selection for Friday's first Test against India at Headingley, following much speculation that Test captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum would find a place for him. Bethell was also left out of the recent Test win against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge due to his Indian Premier League deal with Royal Challengers Bangalore. Meanwhile, Ollie Pope, who had been dropped down the batting order to accommodate Bethell for three Tests in New Zealand during the winter, eased mounting speculation that he could be the man to make way by scoring 171. Also under scrutiny had been Zak Crawley. However, he ended a run of 27 Test innings and 22 months without a Test ton in posting 124 in Nottingham recently. With that pair now, seemingly, back in form Stokes has chosen not to tinker. It's a move that sits well with former England batter Ramprakash. In his latest piece for The Guardian, Ramprakash drew comparison with Bethell and one of the game's all-time greats. He wrote: 'Who knows what lies ahead for him (Bethell) but in considering his position now I think back to the visit of West Indies in 1991 when they had an emerging left-handed batter in their squad by the name of Brian Lara. 'Though people were already hugely excited by him Lara spent the entire series as 12th man before coming into the side the following year, and while the rest of Bethell's career might not live up to that of the brilliant Trinidadian, I can see its next stage following Lara's.' Bethell made three half centuries in the winter against New Zealand and averages 52 in the early throes of his Test career. His 96 in the second innings of the second Test in Wellington took him agonisingly close to what would have been a first senior century in any format. While the various England captains and selectors are very much backing him for the long term, he is likely to have to look on from the stands for much of the summer, as the Test side embarks on the first of two huge series with the first Test against India beginning in Leeds tomorrow.
