Sudan's hidden horror: inside the 15 August Guardian Weekly
While the wars raging in Ukraine and Gaza have dominated global news agendas for months turning into years, relatively little attention has been paid to the ongoing civil war in Sudan – which for many western media outlets remains out of sight and largely out of mind. This can't be said of the Guardian's Mark Townsend, who has reported tirelessly on the effects of the war between the Arab-led Rapid Support Forces and Sudanese military since it broke out in April 2023. It's a conflict that has been characterised by repeated atrocities, forcing millions from their homes and causing the world's largest humanitarian crisis. In April this year, just as a British-led conference was being held in London to explore how to end the war, one such atrocity was unfolding in Zamzam refugee camp in North Darfur. Details were at first sketchy, but only now – thanks to the piecing together of intelligence reports and witness testimony – can it be revealed what happened during the attack on the camp by RSF forces and why it was not stopped. As Mark's remarkable account reveals, the 72-hour rampage in April may have taken the lives of more than 1,500 civilians in one of the most notorious war crimes of Sudan's catastrophic conflict. AcceleTrex Clears a Direct, Credible Path to Sustainable Growth Referrals for growth are not new; however, an automated three-way relationship between the vendor, the buyer, and the market expert provides a win-win-win experience. With over 4,500 cybersecurity startups vying for attention in a $300 billion global market, buyers find themselves overwhelmed by the noise. "A $10 billion addressable market is exciting, but there's a big difference between an addressable market and an accessible one," said Mark Townsend, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of AcceleTrex. "Trusted referrals transform all markets — they don't just open doors, they unlock real growth." AcceleTrex empowers Market Experts — those with operational context and real insight — to bridge the gap between innovation and adoption, matching urgent challenges with next-generation solutions. Medical response for tragic Baggies fan Mark Townsend at WBA game to be examined
The response of medics after a football fan was taken ill at a Championship football match will be considered at an inquest into his death later this year, a coroner has ruled. A pre-inquest review was held on Thursday following the death of Mark Townsend, 57 – a West Brom fan who died after he became unwell at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium on September 28, 2024. Sheffield's senior coroner Tanyka Rawden said the inquest is due to open on September 29 and could last up to two weeks. READ MORE: Brother's tribute to tragic West Brom fan with 'zest for life' as fund set up in his memory Get breaking news on BirminghamLive WhatsApp Mrs Rawden said the hearing will consider issues including what medical equipment was available at the ground and its 'functionality'. It will ask what were the qualifications of the medical staff available in the ground, how many medically qualified staff were in the ground and the 'response to Mark being unwell'. She said this would include the 'timing of the response, the nature of the response and the appropriateness of the medical treatment given'. Mr Townsend's family, Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Lambda Medical – the private company which provided medical cover at Hillsborough - and the Sports Ground Safety Authority were named as 'interested persons' in the inquest, meaning they have a right to ask questions at the hearing. Mrs Rawden said she hoped 'disconnect' between different witness accounts in relation to the timings of the events in the stadium would be cleared up by CCTV footage. CCTV footage provided to the court by Sheffield Wednesday from three different cameras will be shown at the inquest. Ian Perkins, a representative of Sheffield Wednesday, said there was a medical response 'within at least three, if not four minutes'. The coroner said there will be a further pre-inquest review on August 28, but only if this is needed.

Inquest into death of West Brom fan at Sheffield Wednesday game set for September
An inquest into the death of a West Bromwich Albion supporter who collapsed during a game at Hillsborough will be held in September in Sheffield. A pre-inquest review in the city today (Thursday) heard that the inquest on Mark Townsend, who died last September, will take between eight and 10 days. Townsend died after collapsing while attending the EFL Championship game between Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom on September 28, 2024. Advertisement His widow Marion and brother Steve were among the family members in court for today's review. West Brom also sent a representative to observe. Senior coroner Mrs Tanyka Rawden listed the full inquest to begin on September 29 with another pre-inquest review on August 28. She said the inquest will not be held before a jury. Rawden said the inquest would examine the medical equipment and training of medical staff on the day as well as the timing, nature and appropriateness of the response. West Brom fans at the game raised concerns about the length of time it took for paramedics to reach the scene and for oxygen to be provided for Mr Townsend, who was watching the game from the upper tier of the Leppings Lane Stand when he collapsed. Barrister Jade Bucklow, representing the Townsend family, told the pre-inquest review there was a 'disconnect' between supporters' account of timings and those officially given. Barrister Ian Perkins, representing Sheffield Wednesday, said CCTV evidence showed medics responded within three to four minutes but West Brom fans at the time told The Athletic it took much longer for paramedics to arrive and for oxygen to be provided. Sheffield Wednesday, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Lambda Medical, the company that provided paramedic services inside Hillsborough on the day, and the Sports Ground Safety Authority were all represented in court and staff from all four bodies will give evidence at the full inquest. The inquest will also hear from fans who witnessed Townsend's collapse and an off-duty paramedic who was among the West Brom fans and was the first to offer care. ()
