Ireland suffer comprehensive defeat to Australia

IRELAND SUFFERED A 6-1 defeat to Australia in the teams' second FIH Pro League encounter in Antwerp today. Mark Tumilty's men were beaten by the same scoreline against the Aussies on Tuesday. A decent start saw Ireland level with the current FIH Pro League title holders and the world-ranked number five side in the early stages. Advertisement Lee Cole scored from a penalty corner to equalise, after Nathan Ephraums opened the scoring. But Jeremy Hayward soon restored the Kookaburra's lead through a penalty corner of their own, before Ephraums extended his side's advantage. Craig Marais capitalised on a defensive error to score his side's fourth before Davis Atkin added a fifth after Jonny Lynch had been yellow-carded for a collision in the middle of the park. Ky Willott made it six in the final quarter, but the game had long since become a formality. The victory moves Australia to second in the FIH Pro League table behind leaders The Netherlands. 'We let ourselves down playing with 10 players for large parts,' Ireland captain Kyle Marshall said afterwards. 'A couple of green and yellow cards that we have to be disappointed with ourselves for receiving. We know that teams will hurt you when you are playing with one less player. 'We definitely applied ourselves well during those periods, but the longer you are in those periods, the more you are open to conceding goals, and little mistakes compound.' Ireland play their final two FIH Pro League matches of the 2024-25 season against Spain on 21 and 22 June at 9.30am Irish time. Both games will be available to watch live on the TG4 player.

Tom Boon hat-trick condemns Ireland to defeat in Belgium

It's the first of six FIH Pro League games the Green Machine will play in Belgium this week, as Mark Tumilty's team bring the curtain down on their second campaign in international hockey's elite league. Boon, the Pro League's top scorer, broke the deadlock with a fine volley in the first quarter. Thibeau Stockbroekx added a second in the next quarter, reacting quickest after a save from Jaime Carr to find the back of the net. A penalty corner late in the first half resulted in a third for Belgium, Boon getting his second of the match and sixteenth of the competition. An ideal start to the second half for Ireland saw them find the back of the net, when Banbridge's Louis Rowe reacted quickest to lift the ball over Loic Van Doren in net. Boon saw his penalty stroke saved by Carr. A fourth, though did eventually come for Belgium, with Roman Duvekot finishing off a slick attacking move to restore the three-goal lead in the closing stages of the third quarter. Boon finally completed his hat-trick in the 50th minute, condemning Ireland to their 10th Pro League loss in 11 games. Ireland will play Belgium on Sunday with pushback at 2.30pm.

Ireland well beaten by Olympic gold medallists Netherlands

IRELAND SUFFERED a comprehensive 6-2 defeat by the Netherlands in Thursday evening's second encounter of the FIH Pro League double-header in Amstelveen. Mark Tumilty's side had lost 2-0 to the same opposition on Wednesday night. And the Olympic gold medallists and world number one side again proved too strong for the visitors. Advertisement A brace from Lisnagarvey's Ben Nelson was a positive for Ireland to take from the contest But goals from Jip Janssen and Terrence Pieters had the hosts 2-0 ahead by half-time after a goalless opening quarter. Janssen then added a third via a penalty stroke before Pepijn van der Heijden scored a fourth from a controversially awarded corner. Nelson got one back for Ireland in the final quarter before Joep Troost restored their opponents' four-goal advantage. Nelson then got his second of the match before the Dutch added a last-gasp sixth amid a hectic finish. 'It's hard to be positive after a 6-2 defeat, but we didn't deserve to lose by that margin,' coach Tumilty said afterwards. 'We created better opportunities in the first half and yet found ourselves 2-0 down at half-time. 'I thought we should have been awarded a stroke in the first half, but ended up losing our video referral. The stroke they were awarded should not have been; Luke Roleston was behind Lee Cole on the goal line. I thought those decisions were shocking. I expect decisions to be correct.' Ireland will next travel to Antwerp, where they will begin their final stage of the FIH Pro League with a match against Belgium on 14 June, which starts at 2.30pm Irish time.

Ireland suffer defeat against world number one side Netherlands

IRELAND SUFFERED a narrow 2-0 defeat against the world number one side Netherlands in Amstelveen this evening. Mark Tumilty's men created several chances against the Olympic gold medallists, but were on the back foot early on when defender Lee Cole had to clear the ball off the line to prevent the opening goal. Ireland then had a period in the ascendancy, with Alistair Empey seeing his goalbound shot blocked. Goalkeeper Jaime Carr was then forced into a good save before Thierry Brinkman thought he had given the Dutch the lead with a reverse stick shot, but it was ruled out after Ireland immediately opted to refer for backstick, which the video umpire agreed with. Advertisement Ireland continued to defend well in the second quarter, and down the other end, Empey won the first penalty corner of the contest, before Luke Madeley's effort on goal was blocked. It was the Dutch who then took the lead through a penalty corner of their own, as Luke Dommershuijzen registered his first senior goal. Some strong Irish defending, including a vital block by Matthew Nelson, ensured their opponents could not double their advantage before half-time. Yet the Netherlands made no mistake with their first chance after the break, as Steijn van Heijningen expertly deflected the ball into the net with a deft touch. Ireland continued to threaten, with the Dutch again keeping them at bay following the concession of another penalty corner, though the Irish defence also had plenty of work to do to prevent their rivals from adding to the scoreline. In the final quarter, Empey won Ireland's third penalty corner of the game, but Cole's resulting effort was saved and cleared. The Dutch saw the game out convincingly and consequently extended their lead at the top of the FIH Pro League table to seven points. The two sides meet again at the same venue tomorrow. The contest gets underway at 7pm Irish time and is available to watch live on the TG4 Player.

Ireland to face India in Dublin double-header: ‘It's invaluable preparation for the Pro League'

The senior men's squad will play back-to-back games on Monday June 2 and Tuesday June 3 in Pembrooke. Before that – on Friday May 30 – an Irish Development Squad will face the Indian tourists. Both Ireland and India will use this series as vital preparation for the next leg of the FIH Pro League, with both squads set to travel to Amstelveen to take on the Netherlands at the iconic Wagener Hockey Stadium. Looking ahead to the India Series, Head Coach Mark Tumilty said: 'This is a fantastic opportunity for both our Senior and Development squads to test themselves against one of the world's top teams. It's not often we get the chance to welcome a top eight nation like India to Irish soil, and these matches will be invaluable in our preparation for the upcoming FIH Pro League fixtures. 'For our Senior players, it's a chance to sharpen our game against world-class opposition, while for our Development Squad, it's an exceptional learning experience and a rare opportunity to play at this level. We're looking forward to three high-quality matches and to building momentum as we head into a crucial phase of the season.'
