Inside the nineteenth-century mill that is now a café
A café in the heart of a country park is the perfect place for a summers day out, all within the walls of formed 19-century mill cottages.
The Lamppost café was opened in 2018 by husband-and-wife Nicola Gregson and Mark Wellman-Riggs initially as a 36-seater venue.
The café's popularity means it has expanded quickly to include a 100-person capacity function room, as well as the Burrs Ice Cream Parlour, which opened in 2019 next door.
As I was visiting Burrs Country Park for the day, I popped into the café to see what it had to offer.

The interior was intricately decorated with twinkling tea lights, which imbued the space with a whimsical atmosphere.

The café's building has its own rich history.
Once part of Burrs Mill, owned by Robert Peel & Yates, the cottages date back to the early 1800s and once housed 171 mill workers.

During the Second World War, the site was used to billet prisoners of war.
After the mills closed in 1933 and much of the site was demolished in 1982, Bury Council redeveloped the area into Burrs Country Park.
The country park boasts 36 hectares of woodland, ponds, wetlands and waterways that have earned a Green Flag award as one of Britain's best.
A range of delicious cakes were available. (Image: Leah Collins) The menu inside the café was plentiful. I was tempted to opt for one of the café's many homemade baked goods such as Victoria Sponge, sticky ginger cake, Snickers millionaire cake and Biscoff brookie.
The Lamppost had wonderful breakfast options, so I opted for a bacon and sausage butty with a honeycomb latte.

The portion sizes were very generous, so I left feeling satiated.
As well as breakfast options, customers can also book for an Afternoon Tea at the café with a selection of sandwiches, mini savouries, mini sweet treats including fresh strawberries, large scones, clotted cream and jam & choice of tea or coffee.
Lunch options include The Lamppost's signature sandwiches, bagels, homemade soup, hot toasted paninis, baked avocado and large oven-baked potatoes – so I will almost certainly be returning to try them all.
