Product recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods. As a general rule, if a recall involves a branded product, the manufacturer would usually have lead responsibility for the recall action. But it's often left up to supermarkets to notify customers when products could put them at risk. If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer's website to see if a safety notice has been issued. When it comes to appliances, rather than just food items, the onus is usually on you - the customer - to register the appliance with the manufacturer as if you don't there is no way of contacting you to tell you about a fault. If you become aware that an item you own has been recalled or has any safety noticed issued against it, make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the manufacturer. They should usually provide you with more information and a contact number on its safety notice. In some cases, the manufacturer might ask you to return the item for a full refund or arrange for the faulty product to be collected. M&S food sales show resilience despite cyberattack, says NielsenIQ

HighlightsBritish retailer Marks and Spencer's food business experienced a 10.8 percent increase in food sales over the 12 weeks to May 17 year-on-year, despite challenges from a recent cyberattack. The cyberattack led to the suspension of online clothing orders and affected food availability, contributing to an estimated loss of 300 million pounds in operating profit for Marks and Spencer. Marks and Spencer's market share in the UK grocery sector rose to 3.8 percent, although its sales growth slowed compared to previous reports. British retailer Marks & Spencer 's food business saw food sales increase 10.8 per cent over the 12 weeks to May 17 year-on-year despite the fallout from a cyberattack last month denting availability, industry data showed on Thursday. Researcher NielsenIQ said M&S' share of the UK grocery market rose 20 basis points to 3.8 per cent in the period year-on-year. M&S' sales growth did, however, slow from 14.7 per cent in NielsenIQ's previous report. As part of its management of the cyberattack, M&S stopped taking online clothing orders and also took other systems offline. That hit food availability and also resulted in higher waste and logistics costs. Last week M&S said the attack would cost it about 300 million pounds (USD 404 million) in lost operating profit, with disruption to online services lasting probably until July. Most of NIQ's data broadly echoed the findings of rival researcher Kantar's report on Wednesday, with robust sales growth from discounters Aldi and Lidl, market leader Tesco, number two Sainsbury 's and online supermarket Ocado. However, M&S is not fully included in Kantar's market share data set.

Detectives appeal for information after teenager sexually assaulted in York Place basement

Detectives are appealing for information after a teenage girl was the victim of a serious sexual assault in Edinburgh city centre. The incident took place on Sunday morning, 25 May 2025 in a basement storage area on York Place. The 15-year-old girl was approached by a man in a bus stop by Marks and Spencer on Princes Street around 5am. He then took her on foot to York Place. After the assault the suspect left the area in the direction of Dublin Street. The suspect is described as a white man with blond stubble/beard who spoke with a Scottish accent. He was wearing a black zip up hooded top, khaki green trousers, and Nike trainers. He wore a black balaclava. Detective Inspector Mhairi Cooper from the Public Protection Unit in Edinburgh said: 'This was a frightening incident for the girl and we have specialist officers supporting her and her family. 'From extensive enquiries within Edinburgh City Centre, we know the suspect approached her on Princes Street and then led her onto South St David Street, around St Andrew Square, onto Queen Street, then to York Place. 'Despite the early morning there was daylight in this busy commercial area. I am asking people who were within the area at the time and could have seen the suspect alone or with the victim, to come forward. 'CCTV from the New Town area is being gathered and checked – I would ask anyone with private systems to check these and submit anything of relevance to us as soon as possible. 'We continue to carry out door to door enquiries and I'd appeal to local residents and businesses in New Town who may have premises off street level to check any storage areas or lock ups and report any suspicious items or behaviour to us.' Chief Inspector Brian Manchester, Local Area Commander, said: 'We understand an incident such as this is concerning for the local community, and we have a dedicated enquiry team working on this investigation. 'Anyone with concerns should speak to officers without hesitation.' Those with information should contact Police Scotland via 101 and quote incident number 0136 of 27 May 2025. An anonymous report can be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Like this: Like Related
