Funeral details of Irish fashion designer found dead in New York to be announced this week
The funeral details of Carlow woman Martha Nolan O'Slatarra, who was found dead on a boat at Montauk Yacht Club in New York's Hamptons, are to be announced later this week. The 33-year-old entrepreneur from Monacurragh, Co Carlow, worked in Ireland until 2015 before emigrating to the US. She set up her own brand, East x East, a luxury brand for sunglasses, swimwear, and resort wear for men and women. She was also the director of operations at investment firm K4 Capital and ran a fashion brand called Duper. She kept in contact with her many Carlow-based friends, while a Bagenalsown-based family who moved to the US helped her set up her business in Montauk. Ms Nolan O'Slatarra was found dead on board a boat that was docked at a yacht club on Long Island in New York in the early hours of last Tuesday. A man found Ms Nolan-O'Slatarra unconscious on the boat at Montauk Yacht Club at 12am local time and shouted for help. It is believed that two men on a nearby boat performed CPR, but the businesswoman was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services. Inconclusive autopsy results A post-mortem has been carried out by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office, which showed there were no visible signs of injury. Authorities said the autopsy results were inconclusive and are awaiting further test results to decide the direction of their investigation. A police investigation into her death is being carried out by Suffolk County police detectives. Her funeral details on the death notice website read that she passed away 'unexpectedly,' on August 5. The notice described her as 'beloved' and 'adored'. She was the 'beloved daughter of Elma, much-loved sister of Jacqui, treasured granddaughter of Betty and Liam, cherished niece of John, Michelle, Barry and Mona and adored partner of Nick," it said. The notice adds: 'She will be sadly missed by her loving mother and her mother's partner Patrick, sister, aunts, uncles, partner, her father Seamus, grandparents, extended family, relatives and her large circle of friends in Ireland and the US. Funeral arrangements will be published later in the week.' One sympathiser wrote on that her death 'is dreadful and shocking news for you and all of us". It added: "A beautiful and stunning looking young woman with a head on her shoulders. May Martha have a smooth passage home to her final resting place and rest peacefully, sympathy to you all.' The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

She phoned her boyfriend and she told him she was just about to be picked up by an Uber. 'There is such a short timeline between when she made the call and when the 911 call was made.' These crucial minutes between the two phone calls, made around midnight last Tuesday, are at the centre of a police investigation. People staying on nearby boats claimed the man threw a container of suntan lotion at one of his neighbours' yachts in a desperate bid to wake them up. Montauk is at the furthest end of Long Island, New York. Located in the upmarket Hamptons. The town has become the summer playground of the rich and famous. Many millionaire Wall Street brokers relocate there with their families to escape the blazing heat and humidity of New York's summer. According to locals, the owner of the boat on which Martha died has two vessels moored side by side at Montauk Yacht Club. He has previously come to the attention of local police when he was given a ticket for 'failure to display registration numbers'. Given the considerable age gap between them, Martha's friends are mystified as to why she was alone with the boat owner so late last Tuesday night. Although many questions remain unanswered as to the tragic sequence of events leading up to Martha's death, what is known is that a 911 call was made just after midnight on Tuesday. At that stage, the young businesswoman was unconscious. The emergency call was not made by the boat owner, but by a Good Samaritan who had tried to help save Martha's life by giving her CPR. But by the time paramedics arrived, it was already too late and Martha was declared dead shortly afterwards. According to Suffolk County Police, an initial post-mortem examination was 'inconclusive' but 'did not show evidence of violence'. However, police are hopeful that further tests by the Medical Examiner's office will determine the cause of death, which will determine the direction of the investigation. These include the results of toxicology tests. In normal circumstances, it can take several weeks for these results to be finalised. But it is believed these may be fast-tracked given the unusual circumstances surrounding the young Irish woman's death. A police source told Extra: 'This is an investigation into an unnatural death and the Medical Examiner's Office will determine what course the investigation will take. Martha was a very vibrant young woman who had the world at her feet. Shortly afterwards, she set about launching her own luxury swim wear label, East X East, in New York. Through sheer hard work and determination, it appears the young Irish entrepreneur succeeded in a highly competitive business. Earlier this summer, she secured a pop-up shop position at Gurney's, regarded as one of the most exclusive shops in the Hamptons. Despite her business success, Martha endured some personal heartache along the way too. Her marriage to businessman Sam Ryan failed, with the couple going their separate ways. Although their divorce was in the process of being finalised, according to friends, her ex-husband is devastated by Martha's death. Contacted last night, Mr Ryan said: 'No comment. Thank you.' Martha's body was released by the Medical Examiner's Office on Thursday and her family are due to travel to New York over the coming days. There, they will await the outcome of the further autopsy and toxicology tests before bringing her remains home for burial. [The NYPD] aren't saying anything and sadly I don't know any details about that night,' they told Extra. The Irish Central news website reported that Martha's remains were expected to be released to her family yesterday. It also said the young Irishwoman last spoke to her mother on July 29, about plans to come home to Carlow this week. 'She wanted to know if I would be around to pick her up,' she is quoted as saying. 'It was a very quick call because she is so busy, but that's the last time we spoke.'

People who were aboard other boats at the Montauk Yacht Club late Monday night told 27East a man who owns two boats docked next to each other at the marina came crying for help from others on the dock at about midnight, throwing items at neighboring boats to wake up their crews. One witness, who declined to give his name, told the local outlet the man was naked and was shouting, "Do something, do something," as he ran along the dock trying to awaken others. In his haste, the outlet reported, he threw a tube of sunscreen at a neighboring vessel. Two crewmen from a neighboring yacht got up and went aboard the man's 54-foot SeaRay named Ripple, where they called 911 and then attempted to revive the woman but were unsuccessful, the witness told the outlet. The witness shared that homicide investigators spent "some 18 hours aboard the boat on Tuesday" before removing the body. Officials have not yet determined an official cause of death, but authorities said Wednesday an initial autopsy "did not show evidence of violence." Renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden told Fox News Digital authorities in Suffolk County should know the cause of death "within a week," pending toxicology results. "The initial autopsy that is done on day one will tell you 90% of the time whether it's a natural death or a violent death," Baden explained. "If they aren't certain, it's because they are waiting on the toxicology results. A woman who lives in the area, who asked to remain anonymous, told Fox News Digital that certain parts of Montauk are known as party hot spots and claimed drug use is not uncommon. "It's become a very big influencer area, so it's normal to use cocaine, and it's rampant, honestly," she said. "It's a really big scene to party. They'll go to the clubs, and then they'll come back, if they have a boat, to their boat." As the investigation continues, Nolan's relatives in Ireland say they are devastated and in disbelief. "I don't know what happened to my daughter," her mother, Elma Nolan, told The Irish Independent, describing herself as "numb with shock."
