New on HBO Max in June 2025 — all the new shows and movies to watch

Summer is just around the corner, and HBO Max is heating up with a wave of new movies and shows. With an impressive lineup from HBO, Warner Bros. Discovery, and acclaimed studios like A24, the soon-to-be renamed HBO Max solidifies its position as one of the best streaming platforms yet again. This month marks the return of the hit period drama "The Gilded Age" for its third season, so get ready for more high-society scandals and relationship drama. You'll also find "Cleaner," a new action thriller starring Daisy Ridley from "Casino Royale" director Martin Campbell, on the streamer as well as A24's fantasy romance "Parthenope." The blockbuster "A Minecraft Movie" is making its way to HBO Max too, so you can experience its chaotic charm without leaving your couch (or braving the popcorn-strewn theaters). Without further ado, let's dive into everything new on HBO Max in June 2025. For even more streaming recommendations, be sure to check out our guide to the best movies on Max. Legendary 007 director Martin Campbell is back with another British action thriller that, while an obvious "Die Hard" clone, is still a fun, breezy watch if you're in the mood for some pulse-pounding action. And aren't too afraid of heights. Star Wars alum Daisy Ridley takes center stage as Joey, an ex-soldier turned window cleaner who spends her days at dizzying heights along London's high-rises. When her neurodivergent brother Michael (Matthew Tuck) gets kicked out of his umpteenth care home after hacking their system, she reluctantly brings him to work with her as she tries to straighten things out. But her day goes from bad to worse when an eco-terrorist organization led by Marcus Blake (Clive Owen) strikes the building she's cleaning, taking hostages at an energy company's annual gala in an attempt to expose corruption. It's up to her to save the day by taking justice into her own hands, Bruce Willis style, with plenty of vertigo-inducing shots to keep you on the edge of your seat. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Stream on HBO Max on June 13 The Russells continue their upward climb in New York City society this month when season 3 of Max's Emmy-winning series "The Gilded Age" premieres. Julian Fellowes' period drama has slowly grown into one of the streamer's biggest shows, and its next outing promises more high-society shenanigans, messy romance arcs and fashionably gorgeous headwear. Season 3 promises to get back to Fellowes' "Downton Abbey" roots with a healthy helping of relationship drama. After Bertha (Carrie Coon) managed to win the opera war in season 2 by offering Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) as part of a marriage proposal, the mother and daughter's relationship has hit rock bottom. Love is in the air as Russell family heir Larry (Harry Richardson) embarks on a new romance with Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) from the rival Van Rhijn family. Meanwhile, the Russells' social life couldn't be better now that they've safely positioned themselves at the top of society. But whether they can keep their spot on the throne is the real challenge. Stream on HBO Max starting June 22 If you've been holding out to watch "A Minecraft Movie" from the comfort of your couch instead of braving the "Chicken jockey" chaos in theaters, it lands on HBO Max this month. The June Max calendar only lists it as "coming soon" with no exact premiere date, but streaming tracker When to Stream predicts it should be around June 20. The story follows a ragtag crew of misfits (Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen), who stumble through a portal into the Minecraft Overworld. Their imaginations are put to the test as they team up with Steve (Jack Black), a seasoned crafter who's been stuck there for decades, to get back home. Even if you've never touched the game, there's plenty to enjoy in this sugar rush of pixelated fun. It's packed with plenty of quirky charm thanks to "Napoleon Dynamite" director Jared Hess, and Jack Black delivers a standout performance that's sure to win over a new generation of fans. GREEN LANTERN Director Says the Film Could've Been Great If Ryan Reynolds Had Written It — GeekTyrant

When GoldenEye and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell was hired to helm Green Lantern back in 2011, it felt like DC was finally about to launch something big. The film had a seasoned director, a leading man on the rise, and one of DC's most iconic heroes. But, unfortunately, the final result was a mess. Over a decade later, Campbell has no illusions about how the film turned out, but he's now saying that if one thing had changed, Green Lantern might have actually worked… the script, and more specifically, he wishes Ryan Reynolds had written it. In a new interview with The Direct, Campbell opened up about the rocky experience: "Oh, it's fair enough. You know, look, people didn't like it. It failed, right? I was the director, so, you know, obviously I take the heat for it, which is fine. But all I can say is, Ryan's a very funny guy, very fun. We actually had a terrific time on the film." Despite how things turned out, Campbell had nothing but good things to say about Reynolds and co-star Blake Lively: "I thoroughly enjoyed working with him and with Blake Lively. She was terrific as well. And he's always, he's got a great whip, you know, Ryan." He then went on to say that he wishes Reynolds would've written the script: "In fact, I wish to God he had written the script, and it would have been great. But he's always taking jabs at it. And fair enough. Though, listen, it was a big success for him because he met Blake Lively." Reynolds has long made Green Lantern the butt of many jokes, both in interviews and in his Deadpool movies. Campbell has also taken aim at the film's script before. Earlier this year, he said: 'I'm simply saying I don't think that the script was great. I also felt that Parallax, our bad guy, was just a cloud with a face on it — literally, that's all it was. I think while all the characters were part of the story… part of the comics basically, I think the story was left wanting.' Despite its massive $200 million budget, Green Lantern struggled at the box office, bringing in just $237.2 million worldwide and ended up being a flop. The movie even teased a sequel with Mark Strong's Sinestro donning the yellow ring, setting up a Sinestro Corps storyline that never saw the light of day. DC Studios is giving Green Lantern another shot, though, with the upcoming Lanterns series on HBO will bring Hal Jordan back, this time played by Kyle Chandler, alongside John Stewart. It'll be interesting to see how that series turns out.

Joe Don Baker obituary

Although Joe Don Baker, who has died aged 89, was one of Hollywood's most accomplished character actors, he came to prominence as a star in the wildly successful B movie Walking Tall (1973). He played Buford Pusser, a former wrestler who returns home to Tennessee and, armed with a baseball bat, battles the Dixie mafia who have taken control of his town. Directed on the cheap by Phil Karlson, the $500,000 film grossed over $40m. 'It touched a vigilante nerve in everyone who would like to do in the bad guys but doesn't have the power,' Baker explained in a 1991 interview. Tall and powerfully built, Baker had a broad smile and Texas drawl that could convey an aura of menace, but also suggested sharp intelligence, something that served him well in what may have been his best role, as the flamboyant CIA agent Darius Jedburgh in the TV miniseries Edge of Darkness (1985), for which he was nominated for a Bafta as best actor; he lost to the series' star Bob Peck. 'I would have done that all my life … and been happy,' he said. The director, Martin Campbell, agreed, and a decade later cast him in the James Bond movie GoldenEye (1995), where he virtually reprised Jedburgh, as Jack Wade, in brilliant contrast to Pierce Brosnan's Bond. He was Wade again in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), and had already played a megalomaniacal Bond villain in The Living Daylights (1987). Even without Walking Tall, 1973 should have already established Baker's talents beyond Buford Pusser. That year he also shone in two films that have become neo-noir classics, though they were overshadowed at the time by blockbusters such as The Godfather. Both involved professional thieves who unknowingly steal from banks that are fronts for the mob. In Charley Varrick, Baker played Molly, the hitman sent to get the money back from Walter Matthau's Varrick. In The Outfit, based on a Richard Stark (Donald Westlake) novel, Baker played Robert Duvall's partner Cody, who runs a diner between heists, as they seek revenge against Robert Ryan's mob. Although he starred in his next film, the forgettable Golden Needles (1974), he was typecast as Pusser-type tough guys in two 1975 movies; Framed, which was Karlson's final film, and Andrew McLaglen's one-dimensionally violent Mitchell. Baker took a long road into acting. He was born in Groesbeck, Texas, near Waco, where his father, Doyle, ran a gas station. His mother, Edna (nee McDonald), died when Joe Don was 12, and he was raised by an aunt. He was captain of the gridiron team in high school, and won a scholarship to North Texas State University in Denton. He graduated with a degree in business administration, but he decided he wanted to become an actor after getting a part in a student play during his senior year. He served for two years in the army, then headed to New York and joined the Actors Studio, passing his audition because, 'I listened … what you're supposed to do when you act is listen.' He appeared in two notable Broadway productions: Marathon 33, a play written by the actor June Havoc about Depression-era dance marathons; and James Baldwin's Blues For Mr Charlie, which was directed by Burgess Meredith. Moving to Los Angeles, Baker made his television debut in 1965, in Honey West, which starred Anne Francis as a glamorous detective. He kept busy with westerns such as Gunsmoke and Bonanza, and crime shows, including Judd for the Defense and The Mod Squad. He was uncredited in his first film, Cool Hand Luke (1967), but was notable in Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969). He played with Telly Savalas and Francis as the title character in the TV movie Mongo's Back in Town, but finally hit paydirt as Steve McQueen's brother in Sam Peckinpah's rodeo drama, Junior Bonner (1972). Baker moved on to TV roles and smaller films. In 1978 he starred in a TV movie version of Robert Daley's police novel, To Kill a Cop, which became a series, Eischied (AKA Chief of Detectives). He played a Jimmy Hoffa-like union boss in the 1980 TV movie Power. His cameo as a Babe Ruth figure, the Whammer, being bested by Robert Redford, was a highlight of Barry Levinson's 1984 baseball film based on Bernard Malamud's The Natural. The following year, he was a corrupt police chief facing Chevy Chase in Fletch. While Carroll O'Connor was recovering from illness, he took the starring role in four episodes of the TV series In the Heat of the Night. He was excellent as the private investigator hired by Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear (1991) and played a number of flamboyant public figures in TV films: Senator Joe McCarthy in Citizen Cohn (1992); the celebrity lawyer Gerry Spence in The Siege at Ruby Ridge (1996) and the Alabama governor Big Jim Folsom in the miniseries George Wallace (1997). He was the farmer holding off aliens with a shotgun in Mars Attacks! (1996) and stole scenes from James Caan's Phillip Marlowe playing his corrupt father-in-law in Poodle Springs (1998). He played the Louisiana congressman Hale Boggs in The Commission (2003), about the dealings of the Warren commission investigating the JFK assassination. His final role came in a neo-noir reminiscent of his two great roles of 1973, Mud (2012), starring Matthew McConaughey. Baker's 1969 marriage, to Maria Dolores 'Marlo' Rivero-Torres, ended in divorce in 1980. Joe Don Baker, actor, born 12 February 1936; died 7 May 2025

Ryan Reynolds on lessons he learned while working on 'Green Lantern'

Actor has recently shared his experiences playing superheroes. Reynolds recalled his experience working on the 2011 superhero film 'Green Lantern', directed by Martin Campbell. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In the movie, Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan / Green Lantern, a test pilot who is selected to become the first human member of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force. He said that it was a learning experience for him. "I learned all the most amazing lessons I could ever have in the creative space from that movie," he said, adding, "On that film I saw a lot of money being spent on special effects, all sorts of stuff. And I remember suggesting, 'Why we don't we write like a scene the way people would talk? I don't know, it could be a fun exchange of dialogue that all doesn't cost anything?'," according to The Hollywood Reporter. He said he takes the "lesson" of "character over spectacle" particularly to heart. He was sharing his experience during the 2025 Time 100 Summit. He discussed his film and TV studio, Maximum Effort , and how his journey working as an actor led to his career as an entrepreneur. He shared, "The greatest superpower I ever had in my life, I'm not saying about just my career or anything, was knowing who I am," as per the outlet. Maximum Effort has worked on films like Deadpool movies, Free Guy, IF, Shotgun Wedding and more. 'Deadpool & Wolverine', which hit theatres in July 2024, is now the top-grossing R-rated film of all time. Reynolds also discussed the possibility of Deadpool appearing in an upcoming Avengers film, specifically whether the audience could see his famed superhero make an appearance as a supporting character. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Reynolds said, "I do," before pivoting to his experience making the Deadpool films after the character was poorly received in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The whole movie was an allegory for Disney buying Fox. I pitched 18 different movies to them," he said, as per The Hollywood Reporter. "I was really grateful to get to tell a story, to see people like the characters that we made with Wesley Snipes, who should have a third act in this moment. ... That feeling of gasp ... it's a feeling that I just want more of. And I think I would be able to do that as a supporting actor," he added. Reynolds then teased an upcoming project, "I'm writing a little something right now that is an ensemble," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
