Wilson: ‘Mission the same' despite higher homeless count
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — When Keith Wilson took over as Portland's mayor at the first of the year, his goal was to have available beds for all who are homeless late in 2025. On Tuesday, Wilson said they are still on track to provide beds and services that are badly needed there are more homeless on the streets than previously thought. 'When we went into this, the expectation was that we have 5000 people or thereabouts living on the streets of Portland,' the mayor said. 'Now, the new information we have is it's nearly 7000.' The City of Portland is adjusting their game plan to address homelessness in the region after population by tracking each person by name and providing real-time shelter availability. AMR just short of Multnomah County's compliance standards after new ambulance model City Councilor Dan Ryan said officials are adjusting their plan because 'we finally have real information.' Wilson said. 'Our focus is to have a bed available for every Portlander by December 1. However, we have to adjust to the numbers, which we will. And our team has already started talking about that.' The mayor's plan breaks down goals of beds to have available by December 1, including city, county and private, on a budget of $28 million. Despite the new numbers, there are no plans to increase funding through the budget, he said. Diver creates GoFundMe to recover presumed Martin Family car from Cascade Locks 'We've had to adjust some of our day centers from four-walled to, perhaps, outside day centers. But they offer the same services through the same hours. Create resources for those in need,' said Wilson. The mayor said they'll announce 2 to 3 new shelters in July, when the money becomes available. And they were notified this week of a private shelter opening that will provide 90 beds. Ryan said providing services with shelters is key to bring down the number of unhoused in the region. 'If we're not moving people into behavioral health, mental health services, if we're not getting people quickly right into the workforce, we're going to see this continue to escalate,' Ryan said. PHOTOS: Car parts likely tied to 1958 Martin Family disappearance
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — After 66 years, the mysterious disappearance of the Martin Family from Northeast Portland may have revealed one of its secrets this week. A car matching the description of the Martin Family's Ford was found upside down in mud and debris in Cascade Locks in Hood River County. Officials spent two days working to extract the entire vehicle, but could only get pieces — but enough pieces they may be able to make a positive identification. TIMELINE: What we know about the 1958 Martin family disappearance A Ford emblem and a partial license plate along with the engine from the car were recovered in an operation that involved the Hood River County Sheriff's Office. The engine and other parts removed were taken to a crime lab for processing, Hood River County Sheriff Matt English said. Mayo has spent the past seven years diving into the Columbia River in search of clues that could solve the Martin Family cold case. Then he discovered what could be the final piece of evidence while exploring the deepest part of the canal. Cascade Locks locals react after new lead prompts search in 1958 cold case 'What we're calling this is 'The Pit,'' Mayo said. 'This is a forgotten feature of the Cascade Locks.'While diving, he spotted what he thought could be a depression in the canal floor. He used a 15-foot pole to test the depth of the area and later returned to start digging.'I found some wheels sticking up. It's upside down, and I thought, 'Oh, that's a car. That's exciting,'' Mayo told KOIN 6. 'I didn't think it was the Martin car because of its tire tread. Didn't look like 1950s tire tread, and the hubcap on it was super shiny. I thought, 'Well, that's not that old.' So I thought, 'Well, at least it's a car.' And then as I went further on it, I realized, 'Oh my gosh, this is the car. This is a '54 wagon.'' How did they find the Martin Family station wagon? Diver explains Mayo was also able to get video of the car's partial license plate. After a match, officials said they are 99% sure this is the Martins' 6 News will continue to follow the developments in this cold case Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Stark Street Bridge reopens following months of repairs due to partial wall collapse
PORTLAND, Ore. () — A Multnomah County bridge that has been closed for several months due to emergency repairs has finally re-opened. The county announced drivers, cyclists and pedestrians were safe to use the Stark Street Bridge on . A wall beneath the structure in the Columbia River Gorge partially collapsed in mid-September, forcing officials to abruptly close it to address the damage. WATCH: Station wagon possibly tied to Martin Family cold case pulled from Columbia River , the collapse occurred as a result of several vehicle crashes over the last decade. During repairs, officials said crews learned the opposite side of the wall was at risk of collapsing — and there were also holes as deep as eight inches in the bridge deck. They determined repairs would span across six months. The county reported that 'engineers, biologists, historical resource experts and a contractor' worked to resolve the issue both on time and under the estimated budget of $1.9 million. 'Due to the emergency nature of the project, permitting processes which typically take over a year were accelerated,' Multnomah County Project Manager Sara Jeffrey said in a statement. What time will sun set in Portland after clocks change for Daylight Saving Time? Officials noted that locals in Corbett and other parts of East County were most impacted by the repairs, as 'there are few alternative routes in that location.' Multnomah County District 4 Commissioners thanked the community for enduring the closure that serves as a 'critical connection' to other areas. The county will highlight the repair project at an event on Monday at 12:45 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
