Polokwane residents enjoy Christmas in July at Meropa
POLOKWANE – Visitors to Meropa Casino and Entertainment World braved the cold during the Christmas in July and Market glow-festival which presented a delightful three-day outdoor event from July 4-6.
The event featured a garden of lights, a vibrant market, artificial snow flakes, amusement rides, as well as a picnic set-up.
Public relations and events coordinator at Meropa, Martin Mafokoane told Polokwane Observer that the celebration aimed to spread joy and recreate the enchanting atmosphere of Christmas among families, in the middle of the year, instead of waiting for the end of the year.
'This concept of Christmas in July originated in a girls' camp in the United States, and it was fuelled by creativity and a love for the holiday.
'In Europe and Australia, this occasion is also tied to the seasonal weather, with Europeans yearning for the coolness of December and Australians linking their July winter to the chilly Christmases of the northern hemisphere,' she said.
Gates were open from 14:00 each day for the public where families and friends socialised during a picnic session.
There were also stalls ideal for Christmas shopping, a variety of fun family activities, as well as colourful amusement rides for the kids.
The magical Christmas lights illuminated the garden from 19:00 and the event also offered an interactive lighting experience, which guided visitors through a garden trail adorned with state-of-the-art lanterns and air sculptures which were all set to a backdrop of festive music playing in the background as they took a stroll in the garden.
