More work as part of a scheme designed to transform travel in Penzance has been Sustainable Transport Network (PSTN) said access for walkers and cyclists had been improved at Causewayhead and the entrance to the town had been made more attractive.A PSTN spokesperson said two new puffin crossings had been installed at Bowling Green and Newlyn Green and a vehicle-activated 20mph sign had been introduced to help reduce speeds. PSTN received £3.5m from the Town Deal programme, run by the government, and £3m from Cornwall Council. Chair of the Penzance Town Deal board Martin Tucker said: "Through the Penzance Town Deal and our Sustainable Travel Programme, we're investing in a town centre that works better for everyone: residents, businesses and visitors."Previously there were no pedestrian crossings on New Road that directly linked to Newlyn Causewayhead the existing footway has been extended, new paving has been laid, the existing zebra crossing on St Clare Street has been improved and a raised table pedestrian crossing introduced where Causewayhead meets Clarence existing zebra crossing on Taroveor Road has been replaced with an uncontrolled 'build out' crossing point which is designed to reduce crossing distance for carriageway has been resurfaced and new landscaping and street furniture, including benches and bicycle stands, have been introduced in pedestrian areas. Penzance Town Deal Board, in partnership with Cornwall Council, said it successfully bid for £21.5m to support a range of projects that would contribute to the regeneration of the town and boost the local economy.

Other projects include a "park and cycle" facility at Ponsandane, repurposing the iconic Market House, and creating a bouldering centre in an empty shop unit on Market Jew Street. The work on Market Jew Street means it will be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles from Monday to Friday, between 7.30am and 5pm, until the end of November. Mayor of Penzance councillor Stephen Reynolds conceded there was concern from traders about the disruption the roadworks that would cause over the summer tourism season. He explained: "One of the reasons for timing it the way we did was that at least all the works will be finished for Christmas and for local traders Christmas is really important. "The visitors will come in the summer anyway even if there's a little bit of disruption. We hope there will be long-term gain."He said it would be for future generations to decide if the project had been a success. "If people who are now growing up look back and say, 'Yeah, I was around when Penzance was transformed, and it's made it a better place for my kids to grow up in'."It'll just be, I hope, a nicer place for people to stop, linger, chat and really enjoy the feel of being in their high street."

Plans for new park and cycle facility in Cornwall approved

A project to turn vacant land at a Cornish railway station into a new park and cycle facility has been granted planning Council said the project at Ponsandane aimed to improve travel in and around the arriving by car would be able to leave it at the facility and switch to cycling, said the local authority. It said the scheme would see the construction of a new 62-space car park on the former railway sidings on the main approach road into Penzance. The council said five of the spaces would be specifically marked as accessible parking spaces as well as a group of 14 lockable cycle stands for those who wish to leave their bicycles at the park and cycle said there would also be a drop-off area for two vehicles, adjacent to the cycle stands. Penzance Town Deal Board chairman Martin Tucker said: "By transforming underused land into a valuable community asset, the Park and Cycle scheme supports our commitment to sustainable transport and a healthier, more accessible town for everyone." Councillor Tim Dwelly, portfolio holder for economy and investment at Cornwall Council, said construction of the new scheme would begin in the Sustainable Transport Network received £3.5m from the Town Deal programme, run by the government, and £3m from the Town Deal Board, in partnership with Cornwall Council, said it successfully bid for £21.5m to support a range of projects that will contribute to the regeneration of the town and boost local economy.
