What does cross-platform mean in gaming?

If you've been casually following the gaming industry and checking out upcoming video games for the past decade or so, you've no doubt heard the term cross-platform come up. You might've put together that it has something to do with multiplayer games, such as Marvel Rivals or Fortnite, but you may not know exactly what it all means. Now that it is rarer to hear of a major multiplayer game that isn't cross-platform, it is better to know what it means for you and how it is impacting your gaming. There are a few layers to what cross-platform means in gaming, so I will break it all down so you know what exactly it is, why it is important, and maybe if you would rather turn it off in certain games. What does cross-platform mean? When people talk about cross-platform support, the component they mainly focus on is crossplay. Crossplay means exactly what it sounds like: games that can be played online between different platforms, aka consoles and PC. Odds are any current multiplayer game you're playing today is a cross-platform game since it has become standard practice for all major releases. Up until the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch generations, there was no option for someone on a PlayStation to play with or against an Xbox player, even if they were playing the same game, with rare exception. While there were some murmurings about crossplay being possible, it wasn't until September 2017 when Fortnite suddenly allowed players on PS4 and Xbox One to play together after a 'configuration issue.' However, this opened the doors for Fortnite to officially launch crossplay as a permanent feature in March 2018. After that, more and more games followed suit and began implementing or launching with full crossplay support to allow players to join up with their friends regardless of platform. Recommended Videos The other aspect to know about cross-platform is cross-progression. This is still less common than crossplay, but is very common among free-to-play games. Cross-progression allows you to start playing a game on one platform, say the PS5, and then continue from where you left off on PC, Xbox, or any other platform the game is on. Why are cross-platform games important? Before cross-platform support became the standard, multiplayer games died off much more quickly with segmented audiences. Instead of having a player base of everyone who purchased the game to find matches with, you would only be able to play with those on your console. Now that games are trying to be live services and host massive servers full of players, segmenting the community by platform would make the experience worse for everyone. The one potential downside to cross-platform support is when one platform, typically PC, has an advantage over the others. This isn't common, but it can impact certain games. Thankfully, nearly all cross-platform games include the option to disable crossplay if you wish.

Marvel Rivals College Perks: Get 10 Free Skins With a Student Email

You might be subsisting off ramen noodles and Red Bull, but that doesn't mean you need to look broke while you're playing your games. NetEase has introduced Marvel Rivals perks for college and university students that let them wear some of the coolest in-game costumes for free. All you need is a valid student email and the know-how to navigate the in-game menus. Linking your NetEase account with your college's domain is a simple process that doesn't take more than a couple of minutes. Most US schools should be on NetEase's list, qualifying their students for the program, but keep reading to see how others can petition for their own skins. The currently available college perk lets you get free loaner costumes and MVP animations, but there are no details about how the program will evolve in the future. This is a good way to earn some free loot outside of events, Twitch drops and other promotions. Here's all the information about how to join NetEase's college perks program -- and what skins you'll be able to wear throughout Marvel Rivals Season 3. The first rotation of college perks skins includes outfits for Captain America and the Winter Soldier. NetEase Games/Screenshot by CNET What Marvel Rivals college perks are available right now? The current Marvel Rivals college perk allows you to link your student email with your NetEase account to temporarily unlock 10 free costumes (and their associated MVP highlights) for use throughout Season 3. Activating college perks right now will let you use the following skins until the end of the season: Moon Knight Lunar General Captain America Avengers: Infinity War Spider-Man No Way Home Invisible Woman Malice Scarlet Witch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness The Thing Trench Coat Jeff the Land Shark Incognito Dolphin Thor Lord of Asgard Cloak and Dagger Midnight Duo Winter Soldier Blood Soldier It's unclear whether additional college perks will be available in the future, though it's likely you'll at least be able to unlock a rotating wardrobe of trial skins through the program during future Marvel Rivals seasonal updates. How to unlock Marvel Rivals college perks Accessing the college perks is fairly straightforward and doesn't take more than a couple of minutes of your time, but it's tucked away in a menu you probably don't access all that often. Here's a step-by-step guide to unlock college perks on your Marvel Rivals account: Open Marvel Rivals and navigate to the main menu Click the gear icon at the top right of the screen to open the game's settings. The gear icon is located near your profile picture and player level. Click the "community" button in the drop down menu. Navigate to the third tab for college perks, then click the "details" button. Enter your student email address and get a verification code. Find the verification code in your college email and copy and paste it into the in-game text box beneath your student email. Click the "verify" button. That's all there is to it -- once you're done with this process, you should have access to the Marvel Rivals college perks, and all 10 of the loaner costumes and MVP animations should be available for you to equip. College perks isn't the only way to get free skins in Season 3, of course -- though it's probably the quickest and easiest way to add 10 outfits to your account. NetEase Games/Screenshot by CNET Detailed guide: Getting free Marvel Rivals skins and MVP animations through college perks In order to activate Marvel Rivals college perks for your NetEase account, you'll have to verify that you're in possession of an active student email address for a supported academic institution. To begin this process, you need to navigate the same in-game menus that allow you to link your Discord account and become a NetEase Gamer Premium member -- you've likely poked around here in the past to claim a handful of free units, Marvel Rivals' premium costume-buying currency. When you're in the main menu, click the gear icon at the top right of the screen. It's one of the buttons next to your account picture and profile level. Then, click the Community button that appears on screen. Navigate to the College Perks tab and click the details button to start verifying your student email. All you need to do is enter your student email address, request a verification code to be sent to your email and then input that verification code in-game. Voila -- just like that, you'll have access to college perks on your Marvel Rivals account. If your email doesn't work, it might be because it isn't on the list of domains currently supported by the college perks program. You can see which school emails work here (PDF). If you go to school in the US, you shouldn't have a problem signing up for the program -- it's on the list of countries that have generally accepted academic email domains. Even still, if you're having trouble registering and it looks like your college or university is missing from the list, you're not completely out of luck. NetEase is having the Marvel Rivals support team field requests from students to add more domains to the program. To send in a support request to get Marvel Rivals college perks for your school, click the customer support link under the in-game settings. If you provide your country, university name and student email domain, NetEase will work to ensure that your school is added to the program. The list of supported colleges and universities is updated weekly, so don't fret if your verification doesn't work right away. If you're interested in what other free skins you can (permanently) unlock in Marvel Rivals, we have a comprehensive free skin guide too. FAQs Will more Marvel Rivals college perks be available in the future? It's unclear whether more Marvel Rivals college perks will be available in the future, but it's worth linking your student email with your account anyway. You'll get 10 loaner costumes for the duration of Season 3. Even if new perks aren't added to the program, it's likely that you'll earn a rotating wardrobe of cool new shop skins each season -- at the end of the day, it's still free access to cosmetics you wouldn't otherwise have.

Human Torch Summer Event skin gets leaked in Marvel Rivals Marvel Rivals has recently launched the Summer Special event on July 17, 2025, at 2 AM PT which will run until August 15, 2025 at 2 AM PT. This event is actually tied to the recent summersuit special edition of Marvel Comics. In this event, fans will get to relish a number of swimsuit skins of many characters in Marvel Rivals, like Psylocke, Loki, Thor, and many more. As of now, a total of five swimsuit skins have been officially announced so far. Now an unannounced character's swimsuit also gets leaked. This leak comes from credible Marvell Rivals insider Miller Ross, who recently shared a screenshot of Human Torch's swimsuit skin. This screenshot is actually taken from the promotional gallery card of the Summer Event, which showcases Human Torch in a beach vibe, donning a pink swimsuit and blue shorts, with pink flames on it. However, fans are not getting their hands on this skin immediately. According to Ross, this skin is expected to be launched in the game as part of the Wave 2 of the Summer Event Skins, which will probably arrive in the game after the upcoming mid-season refresh, aka Season 3.5. Still, fans don't need to get upset because the swimsuit skins of Psylocke and Loki, Breezy Butterfly and Robe of Relaxation respectively, are already available in the in-game store. The Cool Summer outfit of Luna Show and Sunshine Thing outfit of The Thing come as a premium Battle Pass reward. Those who don't want to spend money on the summer swimsuit skin can also get their hands on one, as the Worthy Waves outfit of Thor is a free Battle Pass reward. All Free Marvel Rivals Skins and How to Get Them for July 2025

Marvel Rivals season 2.5 may have taken our heroes off-world as they battled across Arakko, but season 3 is throwing us into the furthest reaches of space to fight a new threat: Knull and his symbiote army. Stopping one symbiote is tough enough. Fighting off an army of them is going to require a whole new wardrobe's worth of battle gear. Luckily for you, there are many ways to unlock some free skins in the hit hero shooter right now -- including the Milano Repair Logs event that evens the odds with a free Storm Symbiote Storm skin. Outside of the latest event, there are still other ways to earn free skins right now. Whether you're getting used to Phoenix's dense set of abilities or you're still getting used to the ever-shifting landscape of team-up moves, season 3 has introduced a slate of free skins that you can use to deck out your favorite characters. Here's what you need to know about the Milano Repair Logs event, current Twitch drops and the Marvel Rivals season 3 battle pass. Storm commands her alien partner and the lightning with the Storm Symbiote Storm skin. NetEase Games/Screenshot by CNET Get the Storm Symbiote Storm skin during the Milano Repair Logs event The Milano Repair Logs event is a simple challenge-based event launched at the beginning of season 3. It's similar to the Cerebro Database events from season 2, but instead of playing a game of tic-tac-toe, you just have to complete every objective presented to you. There are seven repair logs to complete, with each repair log containing three separate challenges. The challenge rewards are pretty solid this time around -- there are some character-based sprays, profile pics and other filler, but you can also earn a handful of units and hundreds of Chrono Tokens that will give you an early boost in completing the season 3 battle pass. You unlock new repair logs by completing the previous ones, so there's no skipping out on challenges that don't fit your usual play style. Once you complete all seven repair logs, you automatically unlock the free Storm Symbiote Storm skin for your outfit wardrobe. The Milano Repair Logs event lasts until Aug. 8, so you'll want to unlock the Storm skin before then. If you want to complete your symbiote skin collection, there are a smattering of Venom-themed skins for other characters on the battle pass (including two skins on the free track). There are also plenty of Venom- and Phoenix-themed skins in the in-game shop if you've collected enough units to snatch up an incoming bundle or two. How can I get free skins during Marvel Rivals season 3? Players who link their Twitch account to their Marvel Rivals account can nab a free Hawkeye skin. But if you only care about rewards you can earn in-game, a Phoenix skin is available by progressing through the competitive ladder and new looks for Groot and Rocket Raccoon are available for free on the season 3 battle pass. Rocket Raccoon is looking a little ravenous with his inclusion on the season 3 battle pass. NetEase Games/Screenshot by CNET What Marvel Rivals skins are available free right now?
