Lorde sneaks into Sydney club to party with fans ahead of upcoming album release

Lorde made an unexpected appearance at a Lorde-themed club night in Sydney on Sunday, delighting fans at Mary's Underground. The event was a celebration of the New Zealand artist's discography, but few expected the singer herself to show up. According to attendees, she entered incognito before revealing herself on the dancefloor. EMI Australia confirmed the visit was Lorde's 'impromptu decision,' with no label coordination. Fan Andrew Fraser said she mingled with attendees, dancing, greeting fans, and listening to stories about how her music impacted them. 'She almost refused to leave when her management were trying to usher her out,' the venue added. She also sang along to her current single What Was That, which debuted last month at another surprise fan event in New York's Washington Square Park. That gathering had to be shut down by police due to crowd size, and footage from it later featured in the single's official video. Lorde's Sydney appearance comes just a month before the release of her highly anticipated new album Virgin, set for June 27. It will be her first studio album in four years.

Girl, so surprising: pop star Lorde stuns fans by crashing theme party

New Zealand pop star Lorde has sent fans into a spin by crashing a club night party in her honour. Sydney venue Mary's Underground hosted a night dedicated to 'our true Lorde and saviour' on May 25 with a room full of Lorde fans flooding the dancefloor before the surprise guest arrived. Lorde reportedly snuck onto the dancefloor in disguise, but it wasn't long until her fans realised that she was in their midst. The Grammy-winner jumped behind the decks with Sugarush DJ Emma Parke, singing along to her new release What Was That and her collaboration with Charli XCX, Girl, So Confusing. Ms Parke was "still in disbelief" over the pop star's surprise appearance, saying the night was one that she would be talking about for years to come. "After years of throwing events, this was one of the most rewarding nights of my life. Completely unmatched," she said on May 26. It was reportedly Lorde's idea to crash the event, as she prepares to release a new album, Virgin, on June 27. Superstar Lorde crashes her own theme party at Sydney nightclub

What Was That is the lead single from pop singer Lorde's new album – but it also aptly describes the reactions of some lucky Sydney fans who couldn't believe their eyes when the Kiwi star turned up on the dance floor among them at the weekend. On Sunday night, the Grammy award-winning songstress made a surprise appearance at a Lorde-themed night at Mary's Underground nightclub, delighting unsuspecting fans. 'Lorde appearing at Mary's Underground in Sydney tonight was not on my 2025 bingo card but I fear I've won,' a user posted on TikTok. Footage shows the 28-year-old singer belting out her own lyrics and dancing with fans to Girl, so confusing remix with Charli XCX. At one point, she gets behind the DJ decks while fans dance around her, using their phones to create a giant spotlight. 'We're officially in the L4 era, so it's only right we throw a party for our true Lorde and saviour!' Mary's Underground wrote on Instagram. Loading The surprise appearance comes after the singer announced her new album Virgin and Ultrasound Tour – her first album in four years. The album is out on June 27 and the tour kicks off in September with a series of US and European venues. However, no Australian dates have been announced yet. Random appearances and pop-up concerts have become a popular marketing tool for Lorde. Last month, the singer surprised her fans and told them to 'Meet me in the park. Tonight 7pm.'
