Rumblings at Galway County Council as Fine Gael councillor insists he will only vote for party's candidate
The conversation was sparked by a suggestion to hold a special meeting to invite potential candidates to represent themselves and their agendas to the council. A sense of pride in the democratic process of the presidential election filled the chamber, as councillors reflected on the longstanding tradition of supporting candidates over the years — notably including their backing of Mary Davis in 2011 and Joan Freeman in 2018. Councillor Thomas Welby said: 'We have a power, and we shouldn't use it lightly.' For someone to be eligible for candidacy they must be nominated by at least 20 Oireachtas members or at least four local authorities. But also in the conversation was an unmoving opinion from Fine Gael County Councillor Jimmy McClearn as he told the elected members his party 'will vote against any candidate other than our own party'. This decision was made in an independent FG meeting 'under no pressure from anybody' he said. In response, councillors criticised the stance as 'anti-democratic,' arguing that inviting candidates to present to a council where some members have already made up their minds undermines the objectivity of the process. 'It wouldn't be fair on candidates where the two main blocks have decided on who they are voting for.' Independent councillor Shaun Cunniffe said. 'If it's a good candidate, why would we try and stop the campaign before it starts?' Cllr McClearn wanted to be 'crystal clear' about the plan of action for FG representatives in the chamber. ADVERTISEMENT 'With respect, I think we have been very honest and very clear about our situation, we will be voting against anyone who comes here looking for a nomination.' However, this doesn't mean a loss of respect should another candidate be backed by the council. 'We are democrats at the end of the day, and we will fully abide by the decision that's made at the end of the day.' Thus far, seven candidates have been in contact with the council since March requesting an opportunity to come before the council according to chief executive Liam Conneally. The council Corporate Policy Group (CPG) proposed the meeting which will likely be held in September. The suggestion states that each candidate will have 10 minutes before the elected members in order of surname, the meeting will then be adjourned for a short period for further discussion and consideration. A proposal was made and approved to prohibit representatives from speaking on behalf of candidates during the presentation. This marks a change from previous years, when family members or others were permitted to address the elected members on behalf of those running. The special meeting will likely have both an in-person and online option. Funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme.

Students, staff, and community come together for the annual Out of The Darkness walk at Sacrameto State
( — The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Greater Sacramento Chapter and Sacramento State's Student Health, Counseling, and Wellness Services hosted the 14th Annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk for suicide prevention on Thursday. Mary Davis, who is the Board Chair for the Greater Sacramento Chapter said, 'The Sac State Walk Committee and the AFSP Board collaboration did an amazing job this year for the campus.' She said she appreciates all the staff and volunteers hard work who made the event amazing. At the event, many mental health resources came to Sacramento State University and were tabling at the event to allow attendees to learn about what Sacramento has to offer. According to the SSHCSWS website, the walk has been one of the largest walks in the country for registered participants. Last year, almost 1,000 people registered for the events including students, staff, faculty, and community members. Stephanie Giroux-Linn, Board Member for the Greater Sacramento Chapter said, 'By walking with us you honor the memory of the loved ones we've lost.' Christian Couto, a Board Member with the Greater Sacramento Charter told FOX40 it is wonderful to be able to see people come together of all backgrounds. 'It was so wonderful to see so many people come together. People from all different walks of life, all different political parties, are able to share space,' said Couto. 'We all have been impacted by suicide.' This year, according to Davis, over 700 people signed up to participate in the walk. The non-profit raised over $9,000 which will go towards suicide prevention initiatives in our community. Many people who attend this event feel a connection with their loved ones who they have lost to suicide and are reminded of the truth that they are not alone in their struggles. Sacramento State student Cailah Edwards said, 'I would encourage anyone who is struggling with darkness, is struggling with addiction, suicide, depression, anxiety whatever the case it may be, you have a purpose, you were made, you were fearfully and wonderfully made, you were handcrafted, and you have a purpose in this life. Alisha Mitchem, who is from Team Spencer, spoke to FOX40 and said she was walking in honor of her stepdaughter who committed suicide in 2024. 'They're not alone. They need to talk about it, you know, talk to people and make sure that their friends know that they are going through something,' said Mitchem. A student from Sacramento State who participated in the walk told FOX40 that it is good to have this event and just grow awareness over the years so that we can help people. 'It takes courage to be the voice for the voiceless, and you have to stand up for what's right, not just in your own heart, but to realize that if you can be the hand that the younger person needs, how can you be that? So, it is very powerful,' said Richard Angulo, a student at Sacramento State. 'Not only just to participate, but to come as united to save a like Hornet hive together, and to realize we're not in this by ourselves. That you have each other. You have our resources, and you have love here at Sac State.'
