Maryland falls to Cornell, 13-10, in NCAA lacrosse championship game
The Maryland Terrapins' spectacular season ended with a 13-10 loss to Cornell in the NCAA lacrosse championship game on Monday in Foxborough, Mass. Maryland (14-4), the No. 2 seed, fell short of winning its first national title since 2022. The Terps have also played for the national championship four out of the past five seasons. Eric Spanos, Braden Erksa and Zach Whittier each netted two goals for the Terps, while Bryce Ford, Daniel Kelly, Jack Schultz, and Elijah Stobaugh all chipped in a goal. CJ Kirst scored six goals, Ryan Goldstein added four, and Cornell ended a 48-year drought and claimed its fourth national championship. Kirst scored the final goal into an empty net with 50 seconds to go. It was his 82nd of the season, allowing the NCAA's all-time leading scorer (247) to tie the single-season record of 82. "We knew if (No.) 15 got going we were going home with hardware and by god if he didn't find it and find it in a big way," Cornell coach Connor Buczek said. "He pulls the best out of everyone around him." A game, a matchup of the teams from the first NCAA championship, the Big Red won 12-6 in 1971, was tight throughout. Second-seeded Maryland (14-4) never led, but top-seeded Cornell (18-1) never led by more than three. Kirst, who was scoreless for the first time in his career in the semifinals, didn't connect until inside the two-minute mark of the first half, which ended with the Big Red on top 6-5. "Just playing off my teammates," Kirst said. "Semifinal game game I didn't have my best performance but man did my teammates step up. That's what this year's been all about. ... And Ryan Goldstein didn't have too bad of day too, huh?" Maryland, now 4-14 in title games, went down 10-7 early in the fourth quarter, but the Terps scored consecutive goals for the first time. Erksa and Stobaugh made it a one-goal game with 9:23 to play. Two unforced turnovers at midfield led to Kirst and Goldstein goals to regain the three-goal lead at 12-9 with 4:08 left.

Cornell men's lacrosse beats Maryland for 1st title since '77
May 26 - Three years after falling one step short of claiming the NCAA men's lacrosse national championship, Cornell has finally reached the peak. With CJ Kirst recording six goals -- upping his season total to 82 to equal the Division I single-season record -- plus an assist, the Big Red avenged their 2022 loss to Maryland by defeating the Terrapins 13-10 on Monday in Foxborough, Mass. The win gave Cornell its first team championship in any sport since the lacrosse team won in 1977 while handing Maryland its third title game loss in five years. What's more, Kirst reset the Division I career scoring mark with his six goals to finish with 247. Ryan Goldstein had four goals for Cornell, while Andrew Dalton and Ryan Waldman also netted a score apiece. Wyatt Knust finished with 12 saves for the Big Red. Maryland's Zach Whittier, Eric Spanos and Braden Erksa each had two goals, while Bryce Ford, Daniel Kelly, Jack Schultz and Elijah Stobaugh all scored once. Logan McNaney totaled 11 saves in goal. "Credit to these guys, credit to these players, credit to this tradition, credit to my staff," Cornell coach Connor Buczek, a former Big Red midfielder himself, told ESPN during a postgame interview. "I'm the luckiest guy in the world and I'm surrounded by incredible people who just work their tails off day in, day out. I'm so happy for the university. I'm so happy for our tradition. This feels incredible." --Field Level Media

Colorado beefs up its offensive line in transfer portal with former Maryland tackle
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is not done beefing up his offensive line through the transfer portal. The Buffaloes landed former Maryland Terrapins offensive tackle Andre Roye Jr on Monday. Ranked a three-star transfer recruit Roye was only ranked the No. 30 tackle in the portal according to 247sports. He joins the Buffs with two years of eligibility remaining. Advertisement Coming out of high school, Roye was ranked No. 11 overall prospect in Maryland and the top offensive lineman in the state. He chose his hometowns school over programs such as USC, Penn State and Arizona State. However, he played sparingly with Maryland during his two seasons in College Park. The 6-foot-6, 300 pound lineman entered the portal on April 17 after his two years with the Terps. After redshirting his first year, he only appeared in six games his redshirt freshman season before getting his chance in 2024. In 2024 he started seven games helping block for the No. 3 passing offense. In 434 total snaps at Maryland he only allowed one sack. Roye is the third offensive lineman and third tackle added in the Transfer portal. He joins Xavier Hill and Larry Johnson III as the other offensive line additions this spring. Roye continues the trend of Colorado emphasizing size with its lineman as Sanders and company look to beef up a unit that struggled in that area a season ago. New Maryland athletic director Jim Smith is ready to focus on increasing revenue
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Maryland's new athletic director certainly understands the job description in 2025. 'We're going to focus on revenue, because make no mistake about it, to compete with the caliber of schools, not just in the Big Ten but across the country, we must increase our revenues,' Jim Smith said while being formally introduced Thursday. 'We're going to be trying a few new things — I'm not going to tell anyone any of them today — taking new approaches, applying what I've learned from professional leagues.' Maryland hired Smith last week, wrapping up a fairly turbulent couple months for the athletic department. In March, athletic director Damon Evans left for SMU, and around the same time, men's basketball coach Kevin Willard departed to take the Villanova job. The Terps quickly hired Buzz Williams away from Texas A&M to replace Willard. Smith arrives from baseball's Atlanta Braves, where he was the senior vice president of business strategy. He's also been president and CEO of the Ohio State University Alumni Association, and he's held senior executive positions at Arthur M. Blank Sports & Entertainment, in charge of revenue and marketing for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer's Atlanta United. 'I think you can see his vision is next level, outside the box,' Maryland women's basketball coach Brenda Frese said. 'It's a unique hire that in these changing times I think is much warrented.' Smith's challenge is to help Maryland compete — both on the field and in the athletic department's coffers — with schools like Michigan and Ohio State. He said when he started with the Falcons they were near the bottom of the NFL in revenue. 'If you're committed and you're focused to the goals, you will achieve. That's what we slowly did in Atlanta,' Smith said. 'There's no silver bullets from going towards the bottom of the Big Ten to the top of the Big Ten, from a revenue (standpoint). But there's a lot of opportunity here.' As college sports enter a new era expected to involve revenue sharing with players, the ability to bring in money can feel like an existential issue. 'I think if you were to say four years ago, this job is different and I'm not the candidate,' Smith said. 'I think it's just evolved to the point today where it requires someone who understands how a campus operates and can bring in different experience on how to generate additional revenue.' Maryland has won national titles in both men's and women's basketball in the last quarter-century, and the men's lacrosse team is playing in the Final Four this weekend. But football — and even basketball at times — have struggled to compete for fan attention in an area with plenty of pro teams. 'We're going to focus on filling SECU Stadium and Xfinity Center with Terp fans, and we're going to give the best fan experience in the country,' Smith said. Willard complained openly about the level of support he received from the athletic department before he left, and coach Mike Locksley's football team finished 4-8 last season — although he has local quarterback recruit Malik Washington now. 'Coach Locks and I have talked a lot about where we are as a program. I think he feels really good with the recruits that we've brought in,' Smith said. 'Part of it is our responsibility, to make sure that he's got the funding that's necessary to compete at the level with the other Big Ten programs.' ___ AP college sports:

Texas A&M offers rising 2026 4-star small forward out of Florida
Texas A&M offers rising 2026 4-star small forward out of Florida Texas A&M's basketball program is in good hands under new head coach Bucky McMillan, who, after landing eight veterans from the transfer portal, has been hot on the recruiting trail, offering a long list of 2026 prospects, including 2026 four-star small forward Herly Brutus, one of the rising prospects out of Florida. Former head coach Buzz Williams, who departed the program to take over the Maryland Terrapins in the Big Ten, wasn't known as an elite recruiter during his six-year career in College Station. He primarily relied on the transfer portal to build his roster outside the program's all-time leading scorer, Wade Taylor IV. McMillan's strategy is clear: Utilize the transfer portal when needed while developing prospects who fit his fast-paced system. Brutus is currently playing with an AAU team in Memphis and has been playing elite-level basketball lately, averaging 18.6 points per game, shooting 51% from the field and nearly 46% from beyond the arc. While it sounds obvious, McMillan's offensive system relies on efficiency from the field, especially from deep, as the Aggies are expected to shoot a lot of 3-pointers during his tenure, similar to his time with Samford. This is a great start for McMillan and his talented recruiting staff, who will continue to make headway in the 2026 class. It could be one of the program's best basketball recruiting cycles for quite some time. According to 247Sports Composite, Brutus is currently positioned as the 66th-ranked prospect in the class, the 24th-ranked small forward, and the 14th-ranked prospect in Florida.
