Marymass kicks off with spectacular splash of colour
The annual festival brought noise and colour to the streets of Irvine. A dazzling array of colour lit up Irvine on a sun-drenched Saturday night as an event which has become a real staple of Marymass attracted hundreds of people to the town centre. The Festival of Light Parade left Irvine Cross at 9pm and wound its way down to the Moor, for a firework display with people lining the streets to see revellers pass by. Among the participants were the 1st Irvine Boys Brigade, Janice Marshall School of Dance and bagpipers on stilts, Clan Macliche, who played a host of Scottish tunes as well as Elvis Presley classic Wooden Heart on what was the 48th anniversary of his passing. Janice Marshall School of Dance recruit, Cece Booth (10) from West Kilbride said: 'Since I was about two I have been in this parade. I enjoy supporting the dancing group. Some members of the group are involved in the main parade which is nice for them. I really enjoy Marymass.' Fellow member Lucianna Jackson from Irvine (13) added: 'I just started with the dance group last year and this is my first light parade and I am quite excited about it. The fireworks are great fun and also the shows. It's great that everyone comes together for this, I look forward to watching the Marymass Parade on Saturday.' 1st Irvine BB leader Jordan Cairns said: 'This is our third year taking part in the light parade and we also have a float in the main parade on Marymass Saturday.' Member Oliver Brown (12) from Irvine said: 'I have been in the BB for four years now. The parade is great fun, I have been in it a few times and especially love the fireworks at the end of the night.' The evening ended with a spectacular and hugely colourful half-hour fireworks display which lit up the night sky on one of the warmest nights of the year.

Marymass 2025 is up and running with stunning ceremony
Queen-Elect is Laicey Dewar and Gordon Storrar is elected Carters Society Captain. Hundreds of people converged on the heart of Irvine as the Marymass Festival kicked off in near tropical temperatures on Thursday night. Excitement reached fever pitch as Gordon Storrar was elected as Carters Society for a third time and Irvine Royal Academy pupil Laicey Dewar was proclaimed the Queen-Elect when she was sashed by the 2024 Marymass Queen, Millie Barnes. She will be crowned on Marymass Saturday, August 23. Eve McCabe, Mia Loudon, Kaitlyn Gilmour and Miley Smith were ushered in as the remainder of the Royal Party - the Marymass Marys in the Townhouse balcony. Laicey has taken part over the years in Marymass festivities including the Carters' Ceilidh, the Fourth Port Parade, the festival of light parade, the Marymass Showcase and the Marymass Parade. And for her the role is a lifetime ambition. She said: 'I am really looking forward to it and this is something I have wanted to do my full life and am really happy for the opportunity. "The highlight for me will be seeing the community together and to see Marymass happen from the Royal Party point of view. "It will be great to wear my dress and am hoping for good weather. I'm getting to know the other girls really well - we set up a group chat.' Eve, a St Matthew's Academy Fourth Year pupil, said: 'I was really happy, this is really exciting and something I have always wanted to do. I am excited for the big day.' Fellow St Matthew's Academy pupil, Miley Smith, added: 'I was really happy and excited to be selected for this. Getting to wear the dress on Marymass day and setting the day come together will be the highlight for me.' Kaitlyn, a Greenwood Academy pupil, said: ' I am so excited as this is a great thing for the community. This is always something I have wanted to do. I look forward to meeting lots of people and the girls are lovely - friends for life.' Added Miley, also at Greenwood: 'Marymass has been a huge tradition in my family and really exciting to see it come together, we all enjoy talking regularly in a Group Chat. I am very excited and this is even better than Christmas." New Captain Gordon Storrar added: 'It's a great honour once again for me to be presented to you as Captain of Irvine Carters Society. "I would like to thank brother Ronnie Robson for his strong election campaign and it was very close, so I'm a lucky man. "Thanks to the Carters Society, Marymass Festival Committee, North Ayrshire Council along with all other partners for all the hard work they do throughout the year to make our festival as successful as it is. "Thanks to the Irvine Neighbourhood Board for using Marymass to re-brand their new logo Our Irvine.' Provost Anthea Dickson said: 'On behalf of the good people of Irvine and North Ayrshire I congratulate Gordon Storrar on being elected captain of Irvine Cart ers Society, 'I wish you well in the role and am sure this year's festival will exceed all expectations. "Also a warm welcome to the Marymass Queen Elect and her four Marys as well as the Marymass party for 2024. Thanks to everyone for your continued support.'
