Explosion at steel plant in the US kills one and injures ‘dozens'
An explosion at the U.S. Clairton Coke Works plant, located 15 miles south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Monday morning, resulted in one death and dozens of injuries.
Emergency responders declared a Level 3 Mass Casualty Incident, with seven individuals taken to hospital and an active search and rescue operation for those initially unaccounted for.
Residents within a mile of the plant were advised to close windows and doors as a precaution, while air quality monitoring has not detected hazardous levels.
The Clairton plant, North America's largest coking operation, has a documented history of environmental issues and previous incidents, including lawsuits over pollution and recent smaller explosions.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is among the agencies responding to the scene of the incident at the significant industrial site.
