New Delhi: In a major boost to infrastructure and public services, the Delhi government has received ₹821.26 crore in special assistance from the central government. Of this, 66 percent of the amount has already been released. The funds will support 33 major development projects across sectors such as health, education, transport, water, housing, energy, and mass rapid transit. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta shared the development on social media, thanking the Centre for the financial support. She said the assistance will play a crucial role in strengthening Delhi's infrastructure and transforming the capital in line with the broader national vision of a 'Viksit Bharat.' 'This decision is a visionary step toward turning the vision of ' Viksit Bharat' into 'Viksit Delhi.' With this funding, we will move ahead on key projects that will directly benefit the people of the city,' Gupta said. She emphasized that the Delhi government is committed to completing these projects in a timely, transparent, and high-quality manner. Among the projects to be implemented with this funding are initiatives under health, education, water supply, housing, and the ongoing MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) Phase-4. Gupta also acknowledged the ongoing support from the Centre, stating that the 'double engine government' — referring to cooperative governance between the state and central leadership, has consistently contributed to Delhi's development. In recent statements, Gupta outlined her administration's commitment to expanding health services and digital healthcare access. Over 93 lakh Ayushman Bharat Digital Health ID cards have already been issued in Delhi, enabling residents to share medical records digitally with hospitals and doctors. The government has also set a target of opening more than 1,100 'Ayushman Arogya Mandirs' by March 2026 to strengthen local healthcare access.

Study to map gaps in mass transit system plan as new Gurugram metro corridor taking shape

GURUGRAM : Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation ( HMRTC ) has decided to conduct a traffic study to evaluate whether the existing metro and public transport plans sufficiently address current and future needs. HMRTC has floated a tender for a study, which will be undertaken by a consultant agency expected to be onboarded shortly, with completion targeted within four months. An HMRTC official said, "With new residential sectors, industrial hubs and commercial zones developing, it is the right time to reassess metro accessibility and future needs." The missing links — as HMRTC calls it — will be assessed for their ridership potential, feasibility, estimated cost and integration with existing infrastructure. The consultant will "review" existing public transport services, including bus operations and para-transit networks and their role in supporting or limiting metro connectivity. The consultant will prepare detailed projections for travel needs for the next 30 years. The HMRTC official said the review is essential, as many parts of the city — especially peripheral and newly developing sectors — remain outside the metro's reach. "The study will also help pinpoint potential new corridors that could complement existing plans, plug critical gaps and expand metro coverage in underserved areas," the official said. The decision comes amid rapid urban expansion, growing population and expanding residential and commercial zones. As of now, the city has only 17km of metro (5.3km of Delhi Metro's Yellow Line and 11.7km of Rapid Metro). The new Millennium City Centre-Cyber City line, approved in 2023, is now in the tendering stage for Phase 1 (MCC to Sector 9). While there is no official figure for the current population, estimates suggest the city has crossed 25 lakh and by 2031, the Gurugram-Manesar Urban Complex (GMUC) area is projected to accommodate over 42.5 lakh residents. The study will map existing metro connectivity and identify new corridors. HMRTC believes the current metro expansion plan "needs a comprehensive review to accommodate shifting travel patterns and emerging growth centres", an official said. Each proposed corridor will be mapped digitally, with tentative station locations and phase-wise implementation plans. HMRTC's study, which comes amid the city's worsening traffic congestion and inadequate public transport, will focus on the master plan of GMUC. It aims to plug connectivity gaps in the Comprehensive Mobility Management Plan (CMMP) drafted in 2020. The CMMP in 2020 proposed a 200km network of metro and rapid rail corridors. Of the ten Mass Rapid Transit System lines, only one corridor — 29.05km between Millennium City Centre and Cyber Hub — is currently under implementation. Others, such as Sector 56–Pachgaon via Manesar, Bhondsi–Sohna Chowk–Railway Station and Golf Course Extension Road–Millennium City Centre–Sector 5, are still in the planning stages.

Persons with disabilities find access to St. Thomas Mount station difficult

The St. Thomas Mount Railway station has undergone a makeover of sorts with an emphasis on improving passenger amenities. The initiative is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) project. The railway stations in the city that were constructed decades ago, and have since witnessed improvements in passenger amenities only in piecemeal, have undergone welcome changes, particularly with regard to the appearance of railway stations redeveloped and inaugurated under the ABSS. A total of 15 railway stations are under various stages of redevelopment under ABSS. The redeveloped station has an air-conditioned ticket counter, foot overbridges (FOBs), escalators, shelters, paved parking facility and newly built public conveniences, making commuters wonder if the stations were competing with metro stations. The redeveloped St. Thomas Mount railway station, which was inaugurated along with Sullurpetta by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 22, has, however, been a disappointment for persons with disabilities (PwDs). with regard to accessibility. S. Jayalakshmi, a person with disability, using the Mount railway station, lamented that the newly constructed ticket counter was located at the entrance of the station on Medavakkam Main Road, and the FOB with escalator near Karikalan street, at a distance that PwDs and senior citizens find difficult to cover. While the FOB had been linked to all the six platforms, the Metro, and the upcoming Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) stations, the escalators were, most of the time, not functioning, she said. Vaishnavi Jayakumar, a member of the Freedom Movement Coalition (FMC), said the first redeveloped ABSS station remains inaccessible to PwDs because of various deficiencies. She said the ramp to the ticket counter was paved with polished granite, rendering it unsafe, the platform height of suburban stations had not been increased, resulting in a huge gap, and the station lacked a designated parking space for PwDs. She failure to construct a ramped FOB despite ample space availability, absence of lowered ticket counter, and paved parking would pose severe hardships to passengers with reduced mobility. Also there is nodesignated parking. Ms. Jayakumar said that despite the FMC reaching out to the divisional railway manager in 2022 to ensure that stations were made accessible, neither was an accessibility consultant engaged, nor were detailed design drawings or plans shared. The commuters also wanted shelters along with seats to be installed at platforms 4 and 5. where the air conditioned train is normally stopped. A senior official of Southern Railway regarding the absence of escalators in certain platforms said a escalator connecting platforms 4 and 5 is being installed. An official of the Southern Railway said the redevelopment of the station is an evolving process and the complaints the accessibility would be addressed in the coming months.
