Italy earns much-needed win in World Cup qualifying in parting gift for Spalletti

(Massimo Paolone/LaPresse via AP) With a parting gift for Luciano Spalletti, Italy beat Moldova 2-0 on Monday for its first points in the beleaguered national team's attempt to reach the World Cup for the first time since 2014. Spalletti was informed ahead of the game in Reggio Emilia that he would be losing his job as Italy coach in the wake of the team's 3-0 loss in Norway last week, which marked a dreadful way to begin its qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup. Advertisement Goals by Giacomo Raspadiro and Andrea Cambiaso meant Spalletti at least departed with a victory. Yet the Azzurri remained in a perilous position in Group I, with Norway beating Estonia 1-0 — thanks to Erling Haaland's 62nd-minute goal — to make it four wins from four halfway through qualifying. Italy stayed nine points behind Norway — albeit having played two fewer matches — and might have missed a good chance to rack up some goals to boost its goal difference. Only the top team from each of the 12 groups qualifies automatically for next year's expanded 48-team tournament in North America. The runners-up go into the playoffs — the stage where Italy was eliminated by Sweden and North Macedonia to miss out on the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively, in a humiliation for one of Europe's traditional powers. ___ AP soccer:

The pack rides at the start of the sixth stage of the 108th Giro d'Italia cycling race, 227km from Ceglie Potenza to Naples. Massimo Paolone/LaPresse via ZUMA Press/dpa Former champion Jai Hindley was the most prominent victim of a mass crash during the sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia on Thursday as he was forced to abandon the race. The stage was neutralized after the incidents some 70km before the finish in Naples, with the stage however completed after a break. Advertisement Australia's Hindley, who won the Giro in 2022, was among the first to crash on a wet road in slippery conditions, and the Red Bull rider reportedly has been taken to hospital with suspected concussion. German Juri Holtmann and New Zealand's Dion Smith are also out of the Giro while others were able to continue with bandages. Holtmann is suspected to have broken his arm, according to his Alpecin-Deceuninck team. The race was restarted after a break. All riders will have the same time from the time of the crashes for the general classification, with no time bonuses and points at the finish.

Van Uden, a Grand Tour debutant who rides for Team Picnic-PostNL, edged out Olav Kooij as the three-week race resumed in the heel of Italy after the opening three stages in Albania. Pedersen was fourth to maintain his nine-second lead over pre-race favorite Primoz Roglic and his 14-second advantage over Mathias Vacek. Wednesday's fifth stage finishes at another World Heritage site as it ends in Matera, which is renowned for its 'Sassi' or ancient cave dwellings, after a 151-kilometer route from Ceglie Messapica. (Massimo Paolone/LaPresse via AP) MILAN (AP) — Marcus Thuram enjoyed a bittersweet return to the city of his birth as he scored a bizarre goal that even had his famous father shaking his head. His goal extended Inter Milan's lead to 2-0 by halftime at Parma but the Serie A front-runner couldn't hold it and ended up drawing 2-2 on Saturday. Advertisement Inter inched four points clear of second-placed Napoli, which visits Bologna on Monday. Parma's fourth straight draw moved it four points above the relegation zone. Inter is in the hunt for a treble — which it achieved in 2010, under Jose Mourinho. The Nerazzurri drew with AC Milan 1-1 in the first leg of their Italian Cup semifinal midweek and play at Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday. Despite the intense schedule, coach Simone Inzaghi opted not to rotate his squad and Inter took the lead in the 15th minute thanks to several strokes of fortune. Lautaro Martinez's attempt at a one-two was intercepted by a Parma defender but the ricochet came to Federico Dimarco, whose cross was deflected by another Parma player to a completely unmarked Matteo Darmian. And his effort clipped the right post but rolled in. Advertisement Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer made two fantastic saves inside the opening 20 minutes before the visitors doubled their lead in even stranger circumstances. Thuram spectacularly shinned a cross from Henrikh Mkhitaryan but it looped up in the air and goalwards. Pontus Almqvist tried to clear it off the line but the Parma winger kicked it off his own face and in. Thuram's father, World Cup winner Lilian Thuram, was watching from the stands and both he and his son looked embarrassed. Thuram was born in Parma while his father was playing for the team. It was Thuram's 14th league goal this season — 17th across all competitions — and a personal record for the France international. Advertisement Parma got back into the match on the hour mark when halftime substitute Adrián Bernabé drilled into the bottom right corner from 20 meters for his first goal in Serie A. Another substitute helped Parma turn the match around completely nine minutes later when Jacob Ondrejka's effort was deflected past Sommer. Desperate Monza Bottom club Monza looks ever more doomed after losing at home to Como 3-1 left it 10 points from safety. Como moved 10 points above the bottom three. AC Milan was playing Fiorentina later. ___ AP soccer:

(Massimo Paolone/LaPresse via AP) ROME (AP) — Bologna took a big step toward reaching the Italian Cup final with a 3-0 win at Empoli in the first leg of the semifinals on Tuesday. Dutch center forward Thijs Dallinga netted twice after Riccardo Orsolini opened the scoring for Bologna, which is attempting to reach the final for the first time since winning its second Italian Cup in 1974. Advertisement AC Milan and Inter Milan meet in a derby in the other semifinal on Wednesday, with the return legs scheduled for April 23-24. Bologna went ahead in the 23rd when Orsolini redirected in a cross from Jens Odgaard. Italy coach Luciano Spalletti was in the stands and will have been impressed by Orsolini, who also scored in Bologna's last two Serie A matches. Six minutes later, Dallinga slipped between two defenders to double the advantage with the outside of his left foot after taking a pass from Dan Ndoye. Ndoye again provided the assist when Dallinga finished off a counterattack after the break. Bologna extended its winning streak to six matches across all competitions. Advertisement The Italian Cup winner is given a Europa League spot, although Bologna is in fourth place in Serie A and on course to qualify for the Champions League for a second straight season. Empoli, which is third from the bottom in the league and in danger of relegation, eliminated Juventus in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals for the first time. ___ AP soccer:
