Who are the athletes to watch at this weekend's CIF State Track & Field Championships?

Chaparral senior Keelan Wright (middle) is the favorite to win the 200-meter dash at this weekend's CIF State Track & Field Championships. (Steve Galluzzo / For The Times) The 105th CIF State Track & Field Championships will take place Friday and Saturday at Buchanan High in Clovis and though the thermometer is expected to rise above 100 degrees both days, many Southland sprinters also will bring the heat. The absence of last spring's 100 and 200-meter dash winner Brandon Arrington, whose leg injury in a league meet May 9 forced him to miss the San Diego Section finals and denies him an opportunity to defend his state titles, opens lanes for the fastest athletes in the City and Southern Sections to take advantage. A junior from Mt. Miguel, Arrington broke the San Diego County record (20.35) in the 200 at Arcadia in April and one week later set a new section record (10.21) in the 100 at Mt. SAC. Advertisement The favorite in the 100 is Concord De La Salle junior Jaden Jefferson, who enters with the best qualifying time (10.30, three hundredths of a second better than Arrington's winning time last year), but challenging him will be Antrell Harris of Birmingham (who clocked 10.92 to win the City title May 22), back-to-back Masters Meet winner Demare Dezeurn of Bishop Alemany (10.35), RJ Sermons of Rancho Cucamonga (10.47) and Servite's trio of Benjamin Harris (10.44), Robert Gardner (10.59) and Jorden Wells (10.63). Senior Antrell Harris (middle) of Birmingham was first in the 100 and 200 meters at the City Section finals May 22 in Lake Balboa. (Steve Galluzzo / For The Times) In the 200, Masters champion Sermons (20.97) will be in the first heat along with Temecula Valley's Jack Stadlman (21.24), Dezeurn (21.04) has the fastest qualifying time in the second heat, Servite's Jace Wells (21.05) and Newbury Park's Jaden Griffin (21.36) are in the third heat and joining Jefferson (21.11) in the last heat are Santa Margarita's Leo Francis (21.14) and Harris (21.66). Sermons, who announced the day before the Masters Meet that he will skip his senior year of high school to play football at USC, clocked a career-best 20.88 at the Baseline League finals and will try to beat Arrington's winning time of 20.55 last year. Advertisement Servite freshman Jaelen Hunter (46.91) heads a talented group in the 400, which includes Stadlman (47.91), City champion Justin Hart from Granada Hills (47.45) and City runner-up Nathan Santacruz of Venice (47.48). Servite's 4x100 relay was first at the Masters in 40.40 followed by Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (40.77), which will be in the same heat Friday as JSerra (41.44) and City champion Granada Hills (41.78), and Murrieta Valley (41.55) will be in heat four with Birmingham (41.80). Servite also has one of the faster foursomes in the 4x400 as the Friars figure to challenge for the team title, won last year by Long Beach Poly, which won the Masters race Saturday in 3:10.83. The loaded field also features Cathedral (3:12.20), Mira Costa (3:18.73), Long Beach Wilson (3:14.93), Culver City (3:14.80) and Granada Hills (3:24.15). For the girls, Redondo Union's Journey Cole and Chaparral's Keelan Wright are in separate heats but should they advance they would go head-to-head in the finals in a rematch of last week's epic 100 meter showdown (Cole prevailed by five hundredths of a second in 11.36), however not to be underestimated are Malia Rainey (11.57) and Marley Scoggins (11.60) from Calabasas (11.57) and Carson's Christina Gray, who ran 12.05 to win the City title. Wright (23.21) is the leading qualifier in the 200. Other contenders are Rosary's Justine Wilson (23.38), Scoggins (23.59) and Gray (24.62). Advertisement Long Beach Poly carried the baton around the oval in 45.94 at Masters to avenge its loss to Oaks Christian at last year's state 4x100 final and the two schools could match up again Saturday alongside City winner Carson (46.84), which was third in Clovis last year. Long Beach Wilson, the state team champion in 2024, has the top qualifying time (3:43.71) in the 4x400 relay. In the distance events, Corona Santiago boasts two title contenders — Braelyn Combe in the 1600 and Rylee Blade in the 3200. Combe was second to Ventura's Sadie Englehardt last year and won the Masters four-lapper last week in 4:44.36 (more than two and a half seconds better than her winning time at the Southern Section Division 1 finals), second-best among all qualifiers behind Chiara Dailey (4:43.57) of La Jolla in San Diego. Blade ran 9:58.46 two weeks ago to break a Southern Section record that had stood since 1996 and cruised to the Masters win in 10:11.38. The Florida State-bound senior was third at state last year in 10:06.26 and she set a new meet standard of 15:20.3 at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in September. USC-bound RJ Sermons of Rancho Cucamonga will try to double in the 100 and 200 meters at the CIF State Track & Field Championships. (Steve Galluzzo / For The Times) Stanford signee Evan Noonan of Dana Hills, winner of the Southern Section and Masters races the past two weeks, will try to defend his 3200 state title (he won in 8:43.12 as a junior). Advertisement Aliso Niguel's Jaslene Massey and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame's Aja Johnson have the first and second best throws in both shot put and discus. Massey swept the events at Masters (49-7.50 shot put; 165-06 discus). Johnson is the defending state discus champion and won the state shot put title in 2023. In the boys high jump, Mission League rivals Matthew Browner from Chaminade and JJ Harel of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame both achieved 6-10 to finish first and second at Masters. Harel cleared that same height to take second at the state finals last year behind Birmingham's Deshawn Banks. Sign up for the L.A. Trump threatens to cut California's federal funding over transgender athlete controversy

The Brief AB Hernandez, an openly transgender junior from Jurupa Valley High School, is set to compete at the CIF State Track and Field meet. Her participation has sparked controversy, with the Chino Valley Unified School District board president and President Donald Trump opposing her. Hernandez has achieved significant success, including top state rankings in triple jump and long jump, despite the ongoing debate. RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. - AB Hernandez, a junior at Jurupa Valley High School, is preparing to compete as the only openly transgender athlete at the CIF State Track and Field meet this weekend. Despite her athletic success, including top state rankings in the triple jump and long jump, her participation has become a focal point of controversy. The president of the Chino Valley Unified School District board, a state Assembly member, and President Donald Trump have all voiced opposition, with Trump even threatening to withhold federal funding from California over the issue. A new CIF policy was revealed Tuesday, stating biological female student athletes won't be displaced in field events while still allowing transgender athletes to compete and medal. What we know Hernandez is set to compete in the CIF State Track and Field meet on Friday and Saturday at Buchanan High School in Clovis. She is currently ranked No. 1 in California for the triple jump and No. 2 in the long jump by Hernandez previously won the girls invitational portion of the Mt. SAC Relays in April and the CIF Southern Section Division 3 titles in the long jump and triple jump in May. She also qualified for the CIF State meet in both the triple jump and long jump after finishing first in both events at the Masters Meet. SUGGESTED: Redlands Unified school board votes in favor of rule targeting transgender athletes Her participation in girls' high school track and field has drawn significant opposition from Sonja Shaw, the president of the Chino Valley Unified School District, who has been attending meets to protest Hernandez's involvement. Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez, a Republican, introduced Assembly Bill 89 in January, which aimed to ban biological males from competing in girls sports within the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), but the bill failed in committee on April 2. President Donald Trump posted on social media Tuesday, threatening to withhold federal funding from California if transgender athletes are allowed to compete in girls sports and called on local authorities to prevent Hernandez from competing in the CIF State meet. Dig deeper The new CIF policy, which officials said was decided prior to Trump's post on Tuesday, states that biological female student athletes won't be displaced in field events while still allowing transgender athletes to compete and medal. "CIF's proposed pilot is a reasonable, respectful way to navigate a complex issue without compromising competitive fairness - a model worth pursuing," said Izzy Gardon, director of communications. What they're saying Hernandez addressed the controversy, stating, "I leave the controversy out at the meet. I just relax and... do what I can do, hone in, and leave it all out on the (field) and just focus. Do what I can do and just leave the controversy out." Sonja Shaw, president of the Chino Valley Unified School District, expressed her strong opposition: "We will keep fighting, and our girls will win. Our district has already sent a letter to President Trump asking him to intervene because one daughter hurt is one too many. This is the hill we are willing to die on, and we are not standing alone. I will continue to file claims with the Office of Civil Rights, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Education. Advocates for Faith & Freedom already has a lawsuit in motion, and California Family Council has launched a petition." Shaw also publicly tore up a cease-and-desist letter from Hernandez's mother, stating, "I ripped up the cease-and-desist letter in front of the board and I'd do it again. That letter was nothing more than an intimidation tactic designed to silence truth and protect an agenda that's hurting our girls. I'm not here to cower to threats or political theater. I'm here to stand for reality, fairness, and the rights of young women who are being erased in real time." SUGGESTED: CA lawmakers introduce bill protecting girls from trans athletes after state refuses to follow Trump's order President Trump, in his social media post, stated: "California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newsom, continues to ILLEGALLY allow MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN'S SPORTS.' This week a transitioned male athlete, at a major event, woneverything,' and is now qualified to compete in the State Finals' next weekend. As a male, he was a less than average competitor. As a female, this transitioned person is practically unbeatable. THIS IS NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS. Please be hereby advised that large scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to. The Governor, himself, said it isUNFAIR.' I will speak to him today to find out which way he wants to go??? In the meantime I am ordering local authorities, if necessary, to not allow the transitioned person to compete in the State Finals. This is a totally ridiculous situation!!!" Nereyda Hernandez, AB's mother, expressed pride in her daughter: "I couldn't be any prouder regardless of all the noise. She's successful. She is first place, and it's her third year. I couldn't be any prouder." Daisy Gardner, a friend of the Hernandez family, highlighted the severity of some of the online backlash: "Some of the scariest people are coming out of the woodwork saying they wish harm on this family and this kid. I cannot tell you how impressive it has been to see a child compete and focus on her sport." Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez stated at a committee meeting that her bill "simply requires California Interscholastic Federation to align with federal policy ensuring that high school girls competitive sports are reserved for biological females. Let's be clear. It is not about hate, it is not about fear, and it's not about right-wing talking points. This is entirely about fairness, safety, and integrity in girls competitive high school athletics." SUGGESTED: Charlie Kirk discusses conversation with Newsom on trans athletes The backstory Hernandez has been a part of the Jurupa Valley High School track and field team for three years. In 2024, as a sophomore, she placed third in the triple jump at the CIF State Track and Field meet. She also played on the Jurupa Valley High School girls volleyball team in the fall, which reached the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 8 girls volleyball playoffs. SUGGESTED: Debate over transgender athletes in California The controversy intensified after the CIF Southern Section finals on May 17, where Hernandez won the long jump and triple jump. Photos and videos of a competitor, Reese Hogan, stepping onto the first-place podium after Hernandez had stepped off, circulated online, drawing more attention and mixed reactions to Hernandez's participation. What's next Hernandez will compete in the CIF State Track and Field meet on Friday and Saturday, aiming for the top spot in her events. Meanwhile, the legal and political challenges surrounding transgender athletes in high school sports are expected to continue. SUGGESTED: Lawsuit filed after transgender athlete joins girl's cross country team The Source Information for this story is from FOX News and City News Service.

Ocean View's Jack Paavola wins CIF Division 3 discus title

MOORPARK — Among returning local track and field athletes, Ocean View's Jack Paavola wasn't about to top the list in terms of those destined for postseason success heading into the spring. The Seahawks' senior thrower had yet to compete in a CIF Southern Section final through his first three seasons, but he made the most of his one and only opportunity on that stage on Saturday. Paavola's discus throw mark of 170 feet, 9 inches won the Division 3 title in the CIF track and field championships at Moorpark High, adding to a season that seemingly came out of nowhere. 'Honestly, I thought I was going maybe high 150s [or] low 160s,' Paavola said of his expectations for his senior year. Instead, he has laid claim to the school record in the event, improving on his personal-best mark in the discus in each of the past two weeks. Paavola, who surpassed David Keller (164-4½ in 1989) to top the Seahawks' performance list in the event, said he did not expect to break the 170-foot barrier. 'It feels really great,' said Paavola, who has committed to Harvey Mudd. 'Approaching the season, I was like, 'OK, what can I do?' Last year, my [personal record] was 130, but this year, I knew I definitely wanted to go for more. I know very early on, I had a 160 that came out of nowhere, and then it was like, 'Can I chase that mark?' It was, 'How can I recreate that mark?' 'As we've gotten to the end of the season, everything's been starting to click in place just at the perfect timing. I've really just started to understand how I throw and what makes it work for me.' The first-place finish placed Paavola into the Masters Meet — Saturday back at Moorpark — a competition of the section's elite attempting to qualify for the state championships. The four divisional champions and the next best performances totaling 18 in each event advanced to the Masters Meet. Corona del Mar's Max Douglass, bound for Notre Dame, extended his season in both the 800 meters (1:53.72) and the 1,600 (4:10.96). He was the runner-up in both events in Division 3. Newport Harbor's Keaton Robar also qualified in two events, flying solo in the 800 with a seasonal-best 2:14.46 (fourth in Division 2) and pushing the Sailors' girls' 1,600 relay across the finish line with a 58-second split on the anchor leg. The foursome of Savi Smit, Morgan Starkenburg, Aliyah Chappell and Robar were the last of 15 relay teams to break four minutes in the CIF finals. Chappell contributed after tumbling over the last obstacle in the 100 high hurdles. Several competitors fell in that race, and Chappell alertly lunged toward the finish line to place sixth and earn a spot on the podium. 'Keaton mentioned that it was kind of like a 'graveyard' that race,' Chappell said. 'I got into the blocks, and I was ready for my race. I was locked in. I felt like I was moving through all my hurdles, and then I felt someone fall on hurdle six, and I was like, 'OK, Aliyah, focus on your race.' 'Then I heard another girl fall, and I was like, 'This is getting really chaotic.' I kind of was focusing on everything but myself. I looked up and realized that I wasn't over the finish line yet, so I knew I just had to get up and do whatever I could to try and launch myself over the finish line, so that I could get a time. I'm glad that I did. That way, I still medaled.' Marley McCullough was running in the back of the pack in the middle laps of the 3,200, but the Newport Harbor senior rallied late in the race to finish 16th overall (10:47.26) and book a return trip to Moorpark. Fountain Valley will send a pair of pole vaulters — Viet Le and Daniella Mondino — to compete in the Masters Meet. Mondino cleared a new lifetime-best height of 11-4 to place fifth in Division 1. Marina also saw Jay Serrambana advance to the state-qualifying meet in the boys' 200, as did Sachiko Karasawa, whose personal-record mark of 37-3 was good for fifth in the girls' shot put in Division 2. A promising season on the track for Sage Hill was derailed by injury, as Jake Pirnazar saw his season end in the Pacific Hills League finals. Brady Lee, a CIF finalist in the long jump, filled the spot on the Lightning's 1,600 relay. 'Brady just stepped up,' Sage Hill sprints coach Richard Colarossi said. 'He goes, 'I'll do it, Coach.' I kind of looked at him like, 'You serious? Because you've never done it before. Are you sure you know what you're getting yourself into?' He goes, 'No, Coach. I want to do it.' 'I go, 'OK, I need at least a 55-[second lap] out of you.' He put it down on the very first race, and then the following week, he did it again. All of the sudden, we're here, and he ran his PR, like a low 54, and this is a guy who has never, ever run it before.' Sage Hill's 1,600 relay team didn't qualify for Masters, but it bettered a school record that had stood since 2006. James Karahalios, Preston Simpson, Adam Pirnazar and Lee combined to clock in at 3:25.28. CIF Southern Section finals At Moorpark High Division 1 Team Results 1. Long Beach Poly 44; 2.
