He performed it during a concert for the first time during his May 30, 2025, Mathematics Tour stop in Madrid, Spain. During the next show on the following night, Sheeran once again performed it along with another unreleased song from the album called 'Opening.' Videos have surfaced of Sheeran performing the song for the first time with his loop pedal. He had previously performed acoustic versions of it at his Old Phone pub. The video showed him constructing the layers of the song. While the song is unreleased, the crowd chanted 'Sapphire!' during the chorus. 'Your lights, your face, your eyes exploding like fireworks in the sky,' Sheeran sings. 'Sapphire' is a signature Sheeran pop song. Its infectious and upbeat tone is bound to be an earworm for fans, and the official song drops on June 5, 2025, as a single. It will be the third single from his upcoming album Play. Previously, Sheeran released 'Azizam' and 'Old Phone' on April 4 and May 1, respectively. Whether or not Sheeran plans on releasing more singles for the album is unknown. Play will be released on September 12, 2025, so there will be over three months between 'Sapphire' and the album drop. Sheeran's two shows in Madrid, Spain, mark the start of the final European leg of the Mathematics Tour. In July, Sheeran will play shows in his hometown of Ipswich, England, to promote Play. The Mathematics Tour is Sheeran's longest to date. It started in 2022 and is in its fourth year on the road. It will conclude in September 2025 when he visits Germany again. A total of 168 shows are planned for the tour's run over the last few years. That is still nearly 100 fewer shows than his last tour, the Divide Tour, which stretched from March 16, 2017, to August 26, 2019. While on the Mathematics Tour, Sheeran has released two albums. Subtract and Autumn Variations both came out in 2023. Additionally, he has released a greatest hits album (The Mathematics Tour Collection) and his first live album, Tour Collection: Live.

The British hitmaker, 34, made the casual revelation in a TikTok comment this week, setting off a frenzy among fans already preparing for the next stadium spectacular. The tour bombshell was picked up by Nova 96.9 radio host Smallzy who shared the exchange to his Instagram Story with the hilarious caption: 'BRB selling organs to buy concert tickets'. In the now-viral TikTok, a fan asked the singer: 'How does coming back to Australia soon sound to you?' Ed, without skipping a beat, replied: 'Start of 2026'. It comes after last week Ed shared a series of throwback snaps to Instagram, including a fun selfie with Taylor Swift, while also reflecting on his copyright trial. The star launched a new Instagram account to celebrate his 'emotional' new single Old Phone. The account featured a number of never-before-seen pictures, texts, and lyric notes, and came ahead of the release of his new single on Thursday April 29. Ed was inspired to write the new song when revisiting his old phone during the copyright lawsuit around his hit single Thinking Out Loud. At the time, Ed denied he had ripped off Marvin Gaye's soul classic Let's Get it On for his 2014 hit song, and in 2023 was cleared in court. Explaining the new account, Ed penned in a new Instagram post: 'Put the sound on and have a listen. I got rid of my phone 2015, and moved onto email full time. I just turned my phone off December '15 and that was it. 'When I got sued, the judge ordered me to give up my old devices to the other sides lawyers, to look through messages, emails, voice notes, videos, etc, to see if there was anything on there to help their case. In the process, I switched on my old phone. Ed continued: 'It felt like a time capsule, a time of life that I was in, and living at that time in 2015. Turning it on really spun me out, I found myself scrolling messages and conversations with people who are no longer here. 'I found myself crying at messages to friends who are now dead, who I won't get to speak to again. I found old photos of me with people I was so close to then, but we've lost touch since. 'The whole experience was such an emotional journey. I wrote the song Old Phone on my own at 2am whilst jet lagged in India finishing the album, and recorded it that morning. It feels like a song that should've been on my debut album, but also a song I couldn't have written until I experienced real life things happening to me.' Speaking on the meaningful new song, Ed added: 'It makes me emotional to sing, I hope it finds some emotion in you too.'

Ed Sheeran was left red-faced after falling over on stage during the opening night of his Mathematics Tour in Madrid, having wowed fans at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend Ed Sheeran's European tour kicked off on a rather flat note... and that is not referring to his vocals. The Grammy-winning star took a spectacular tumble on stage in front of thousands of fans during his performance in Madrid on Friday night. At 34, Ed has managed to sell out two concerts at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, which can accommodate over 70,000 fans when filled to capacity. Luckily for Ed's international fans, they can still join in the fun each night thanks to the internet, but unfortunately for the star, this also means his embarrassing moments are immortalised. Videos taken by those present at the concert show Ed energetically sprinting onto the stage and doing a lap, urging fans to clap before his next song. However, his enthusiasm seemed to get the better of him, resulting in Ed ending up face down on the floor. Being the professional he is, he quickly got up and started strumming his guitar as if nothing had happened, laughing off the mishap. As fans behind their cameras also giggled, Ed shook his head, launching into his 2017 Divide album hit Castle on the Hill. Responding to clips of the incident, one fan joked on X about the gig: 'He had to be iconic from the start.' Another said: 'He's so cute, hope he's ok.' A third tweeted: 'LOL it's starting well', as a fourth wrote: 'LOL Poor thing, he's excited, leave him alone!' Following rumours of a 'big name' taking to the stage at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool, Ed showed up on the New Music Stage on Saturday afternoon, saying he chose the stage because he'd 'never played it before' and the tent had 'the best energy'. Ed's set was so popular that access to the tent had to be temporarily restricted as it reached maximum capacity. Also performing at Big Weekend was Stargazing singer Myles Smith, who is supporting Ed on his tour. Ed first burst onto the music scene in 2011 and has gone on to sell over 200million records worldwide. Speaking recently about his future, he revealed his plans to call it a day after releasing 10 unique studio albums, drawing inspiration from filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. "I wanted to do 10," Ed shared on Jimmy Fallon's talk show, expressing his fascination with Tarantino, who he heard was making 10 films alongside side projects like Grindhouse. Ed's initial series of albums followed a mathematical theme, with titles such as Plus, Multiply, Divide, Subtract, and Equals. Deviating from this pattern, he now plans to include Pause, Fast Forward, Rewind, and Stop - an idea he's harboured since he was 18. In addition to this, the father-of-two, who tied the knot with childhood love Cherry Seaborn in 2019, is also continuously working on a life-spanning album, set to be released posthumously.

FACT Review: Ed Sheeran's one-man show proves to be the perfect equation
Ed Sheeran performed as part of the inaugural Offlimits Music Festival which also marked his debut in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi has been upping the ante lately with a lineup of incredible concerts. 2025 kicked off with Coldplay, and we've since seen legends like Sting, Christina Aguilera, and Usher set stages on fire. Most recently, it was Ed Sheeran who headlined the inaugural Offlimits Music Festival in the capital. Bringing his Mathematics Tour to Abu Dhabi's Etihad Park, this marked Ed Sheeran's first-ever performance in the UAE capital. He had previously wowed Dubai crowds last year with the same tour. As a long time Ed Sheeran fan, this concert was a third time's the charm moment. Having missed his 2015 show at Dubai Media City Amphitheater and 2024 Dubai shows, his performance as part of the Offlimits Music Festival felt like fate — even if fate involved a very last-minute dash to the venue. Getting into Etihad Park was its own mini adventure. With Yas Mall parking packed to the brim, a solid 15-minute mall trek and then to the actual gate, FACT made it just in time. Before Ed Sheeran took the stage, One Republic had gotten the crowd buzzing. The band's frontman, Ryan Tedder signed off cheekily, announcing, 'Next up is Ed Sheeran from the UK… he's alright,' sending ripples of laughter and cheers through the crowd. Then, without any dramatic pause, playful tease, or the usual 'get-your-phones-ready' intro most artists lean on, Ed Sheeran burst onto the stage strumming — and drumming — with his battered and beloved guitar. The crowd instantly erupted. Dressed in simple black trousers and a black T-shirt that had 'Abu Dhabi' printed across it in the colourful style of his Mathematics Tour branding, Ed Sheeran took command of the stage effortlessly. He kicked off with a guitar solo, layering beats with his loop pedal. This lets him create tunes completely live and have them looped, freeing him up to interact with the crowd without missing a note. Once Ed Sheeran was in the groove, he launched into Castle on the Hill, with the entire crowd belting along. Behind him, animations danced across giant screens — some clips from his album artwork, some live visuals like butterflies fluttering across bright backgrounds. It added a dreamy feel without overpowering the simplicity of his one-man-band setup. Ed Sheeran rolled through hit after hit — Shivers, I'm a Mess, and The A Team. Fun fact: the singer confessed he thought The A Team would be a one-hit-wonder. Safe to say, things turned out just fine for him. When he sang Give Me Love, the mood mellowed, but the crowd stayed connected, humming along with him. Then, picking the energy right back up, he invited the audience to sing along that only made the night feel even more special. Next came Don't and Take It Back, where Ed Sheeran went full rap mode, ditching his guitar for a bit and just spitting bars. While most artists spend live shows switching flashy outfits, Ed Sheeran stuck to his trusty black tee and swapped out guitars instead. It was clear. For him, it's about the music, not the theatrics. Soon, he slowed things down with Happier, Love Yourself and Sing. When Photograph started, you could feel the emotional shift. That song hit differently as the crowd swayed under a soft green sage-like animation playing on the screens. From there, the set flowed beautifully — One, Perfect and Thinking Out Loud had couples dancing and grooving in a sea of lights, before everyone jumped back up for Ed Sheeran's latest track, Azizam. Finally, we hit the home stretch with the high-energy Shape of You — the entire Etihad Park jumping in unison — before he closed the night with Bad Habits and a massive firework display that lit up the sky. It was a grand, sparkling finale to a night that felt like it flew by too fast. Ed Sheeran performed for two hours straight — no backing band, no break, just a man, his guitar, his loop pedal, and 30,000 fans singing right along. Most artists would have taken a breather, but not Ed Sheeran. He powered through with an energy and passion that proves why he's considered one of the best live performers today. Now, to be fair, not everything was perfect. While Ed Sheeran's performance was spot on, the sound system at Etihad Park left a bit to be desired. It felt overly loud and slightly distorted with that crackling sound that can get a bit uncomfortable. Maybe it was because the organisers were trying to project all the way to the back of a massive crowd or to drown out the sounds from the other stages, which really should have been inactive during the headline set. All in all, Ed Sheeran's set at the Offlimits Music Festival was nothing short of incredible. The sheer talent, energy, and heart he brought to the stage completely overshadowed everything else.
