Hong Kong, Malaysia could be new dawn for Manchester United
An upbeat Ruben Amorim said Manchester United were entering a new dawn on their post-season tour of Malaysia and Hong Kong. The club's decision to jet to Asia immediately after they lowered the curtain on a dismal campaign has attracted criticism, amid prevailing concerns over player welfare. But Amorim and midfielder Mason Mount did not appear reluctant tourists as they spoke in a packed, sweltering function room at Kuala Lumpur's plush W Hotel. The Portuguese boss fixed his gaze to the floor as dignitaries lauded celebrated former Old Trafford bosses Matt Busby and Alex Ferguson. Amorim said the matches against Asean All-Stars on Wednesday, and in Hong Kong two days later were 'to improve the team'. Harry Maguire is set to skip Manchester United's game in Hong Kong after playing in Malaysia. Photo: Reuters 'It's a pleasure to be here, and it's really important to have the connection with our fans – it's what makes this club one of the best in the world,' Amorim added. 'Every game we play, we have a big responsibility, because fans around the world are watching.'

Pick your Man Utd player of the season
We asked our Manchester United fan contributor for their four candidates for player of the season and you can now select your top one. Bruno Fernandes Fernandes is understandably the favourite to retain his Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year trophy at the club and join David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo on a record four wins. He has been a level above again, and deserves better than Manchester United's current depths. Amad Diallo If not for an unfortunate ankle injury that sidelined him for three months, Amad would dominate the player of the season ballots. The exciting Ivorian has exploded this term and committed his future to United until 2030 in January. Noussair Mazraoui Mazraoui arrived as an add-on in the Matthijs de Ligt deal last summer, which has proven to be a £17m masterstroke. The Moroccan has shown commendable consistency at full-back, centre-back, wing-back and even in attacking midfield, and he undoubtedly has a role to play in Ruben Amorim's mammoth rebuild. Harry Maguire Not only has Maguire continued his renaissance at the heart of Amorim's back three, but he has also contributed multiple clutch goals. Among them were Porto (90+1), Leicester City (90+3), and, of course, Lyon (120+1) - one of the most memorable in Old Trafford's iconic history. Bruno Fernandes Equals Cristiano Ronaldo, Achieves Huge Manchester United Honour
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for a record-equalling fourth time. Fernandes is the third player to complete a quadruple of wins, after former teammates David De Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award is decided by fan votes. Fernandes was the clear winner after his impressive individual contributions throughout the campaign. Despite United's struggles in the Premier League, the no. 8 has been inspirational, racking up 38 goal involvements (19 goals and 19 assists) across 54 games. It's his second-best seasonal tally since joining in 2020, and there is still chance to finish on a high, with everyone eagerly anticipating next Wednesday's Europa League final in Bilbao. Fernandes is the joint-leading scorer in the competition and has been a pivotal figure during the knockout rounds, with the highlights including his last-16 hat-trick at Old Trafford to see off Real Sociedad and a double against Athletic Club in the semi-final first leg. De Gea came out on top in four years out of five between 2014 and 2018, while Ronaldo's success three seasons ago added to the accolades he claimed in 2004, 2007 and 2008. Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Brian McClair, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy are the only other men with multiple Player of the Year victories since it was first awarded in 1988. Fernandes, who was also the winner in 2020, 2021 and 2024, came first in the poll by some distance, although Amad may have pushed him closer were it not for the injury that kept him out between February and early May. Third place went to Harry Maguire, who has come up trumps in key moments throughout the campaign, not least when scoring the dramatic late winner in their 5-4 victory over Lyon at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes equals Cristiano Ronaldo record despite divisive Man Utd move
Bruno Fernandes' impressive year has been recognised with a record-equalling fourth Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award - even if the Manchester United boss chose to cancel their awards dinner Bruno Fernandes has been named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award and in doing so makes Manchester United history. The United skipper has become the third player to win the award a record four times - albeit the club had no end of the season gig for him to claim it. Fernandes has been a standout in has been a dire season, often carrying the team during their period of prolonged struggles. The Portuguese playmaker has stood up during the team's European campaign and could help the side end the year as Europa League winners. He's continued to come up trumps in the final third and has 38 goal involvements - 19 goals and 19 assists - across his 54 games. But that has come amid a desperate domestic season that has United currently sat in 16th - by far their worst ever Premier League showing. Traditionally United hold a huge gala dinner at Old Trafford for the men's, women's and youth teams at the end of each campaign, with awards handed out to the best performers of the season, but club bosses opted against one this term. Instead of the dinner it is expected that the awards will be handed out on the Old Trafford pitch prior to the club's final game of the season at home to Aston Villa. Fernandes will still receive his individual accolade and it means he's landed the Player of the Year gong on four occasions - the same amount of David De Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo. The decision to cancel the ceremony did receive some negative responses, considering the women's side secured a top-four finish and reached the FA Cup final, which will be played this weekend. It also prevented the club's youngsters from going on stage to pick up their honours, with Harry Amass named Young Player of the Year. De Gea enjoyed a purple patch where he continued to be voted on top. He won it four times in five years with his first coming in 2014. Cristiano Ronaldo also won it four times, doing so in 2004, 2007 and 2008 before adding another during his second stint in Manchester. Fernandes' wins came in 2020, 2021 and 2024 and he dominated the voting this time round with Amad in second and Harry Maguire in third. Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Brian McClair, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy are the only other men with multiple Player of the Year victories since it was first awarded in 1988, bearing the name of their iconic manager. Fernandes' quality has led to talk of interest from Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal are ready to lodge a hefty offer, but the Premier League side have no plans to their talisman. The Saudi Pro League club have the funds for a mega signing after Mohamed Salah decided to stay at Liverpool, with talks being held about pursuing the Portugal star. It is understood there was initial contact between the two parties last year before Fernandes signed a new contract to keep him in Manchester until 2027. Only last month Ruben Amorim rejected the possibility of his talisman leaving for - underlining his importance as the club's captain and leading light. He said: "No, it's not going to happen. He's not going anywhere because I've already told him!" Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
