Column: Kaneland referendum question focuses on updates to address learning, safety, security

When Matt Richtman won the Los Angeles Marathon in record time last weekend — becoming the first American champion in 30 years – the 25-year-old athlete put his tiny hometown of Elburn on the map. There's good reason students, staff and alumni of Kaneland High School were all abuzz about this huge accomplishment, which happens to come when School District 302 is hoping for a big win of its own – to pass an overdue referendum question for much-needed improvements to the schools. Those updates include modernizing science labs and a heating system that go back to the late 1950s; providing enough gym space so students don't have to fulfill mandated P.E. by walking in the halls; and centralizing its outdated transportation center to gain mileage efficiency and possibly reduce long bus rides for students. The referendum question – the last one was passed 17 years ago – is asking for the issuing of bonds in the amount of $140,274,000, which will restructure and extend the district's current loan, but unlike the failed 2023 referendum, would not raise taxes. That's a critical detail supporters want to emphasize, along with the fact the money this time around would benefit far more than the high school. All schools, except for Harter, completed in 2009, would receive HVAC upgrades, with the elementary buildings also getting new roofs and playgrounds, and two of those schools receiving new flooring, as well. The largest chunk of the pie, however, would be directed at the high school, which is sorely in need of an infrastructure facelift to enhance both athletics and academics. That includes adding turf and far more seating to the football stadium, as well as a 78,000-square-foot field house featuring a six-lane track, four basketball/volleyball courts, weight and training rooms. 'Without that field house, other projects are not possible,' noted Kurt Rohlwing, who took over as superintendent of Kaneland School District this year and has been hitting the road hard in an attempt to get critical information out to residents before the April 1 election. Lack of space is why 'we can't get all 1,200 students through P.E.' without having some of them fulfill that state mandate by walking the halls, he pointed out. And the field house, which could also be used for community events, would allow for repurposing of the outdated west gym into career tech education classrooms that cover subjects from media production to CAD engineering and production, to woodworking engineering and production, to graphics and culinary labs. 'We need a complete renovation,' said Rohlwing, noting that 'many other classrooms in the old part of the building have not been updated for decades.' Like those science labs that have been around since 1958 when the school was built. Or old bathrooms that are not fully accessible. Or the original boilers that closely resemble 'the engines in a World War II submarine,' according to the superintendent. Also getting much-needed attention: the high school entrance, which is so small visitors often get confused about which door to enter, and is not designed for optimum security or efficiency for parents and students alike. The renovation of the high school, which would cut down on congestion and create flexible learning spaces – including a student commons area – also calls for improved lighting, acoustics and ventilation, which studies show can greatly impact student learning, noted Rohlwing. The goal is to convert 'a big chunk of the building' into geothermal heat and air as a long-term cost-saving measure, he added. More details, including relocation of the transportation building/bus lot to Harter Middle School, can be found at 'The list is long because the need has been ignored for too long,' said Audrey Wirth, who has children in third and sixth grades and is leading the Kaneland YES committee. 'The time is now,' she added, referring to the structuring of the referendum question that would not raise taxes. 'Our kids deserve the same as those in surrounding districts.' As a resident of this community who had kids – and now grandkids – getting their education here, I echo her sentiment: Kaneland has not kept up with other communities in terms of its facilities. 'Embarrassing' is the word often used by parents and students, and certainly it was uttered frequently when I wrote a year ago about the decrepit Kaneland High School track that was not updated until another hometown track star was injured on it. Supporters of the referendum are hoping this new administration, which includes Rohlwing and Assistant Superintendent for Business Jackie Bogan, will turn the ship around, in part, by rebuilding trust. It would not be without trying. Both leaders have been working long hours to make the rounds in this district that covers over 140 square miles, speaking to residents and answering concerns. Questions, they tell me, range from why not rebuild the high school in a more centralized location to why did the problems become so bad that such an overhaul is needed. Without industry or retail in this school district, much needed projects were 'pushed down the line,' the superintendent told me when we spoke earlier this week. And as far as starting from scratch, Rohlwing has assured residents that professionals brought in to assess district needs insist the high school's bones are still in good shape. The time to build is now, supporters declare, because construction costs will only go up. 'We have a great climate at Kaneland and a ton of community spirit,' said a cautiously optimistic Rohlwing. 'Largely, the community sees the need.' 'But we need residents to get out and vote yes for the Kaneland school referendum,' added Wirth. 'How can you ever go wrong investing in education, not just for our kids now but for generations to come.'

2025 LA Marathon winner, Matt Richtman says it took "months of dedicated training"

In just his second-ever marathon race, Illinois native Matt Richtman won Sunday's Los Angeles Marathon , the first American to do so in 31 years. For the Montana State cross-country standout, he said the inspiration for doing the 26-mile race came from the running community. "For me, really getting into the marathon was just, you know it just started with being with everyone," Richtman said. "You know the marathon and half marathons are such a community group and for me, I just wanted to be part of that." Richtman's high school cross country coach said he called the win at mile 13 when Richtman made his move. "The commentator on the stream was saying he might be fading a little bit, I'm going, I've seen him do this move 50 times. He's gonna win it, and I don't think I blinked the last hour of the race," Kaneland High School head track and field coach Andy Drendel said. The coach told CBS News Chicago that Richtman was "the best competitor that we'd ever seen." There was a lot of preparation and training for the 25-year-old ahead of the March 16 race. His father, Tom Richtman, told CBS News Chicago that his son trained two hours a day, for six months – running over 100 miles a week, despite the weather. "There was a lot of preparation for sure, years building on it and months of dedicated training, just for the LA Marathon," Richtman said. He said he wasn't sure about his winning prospects, not until the last three miles or so. "And so really it was just focusing on the finish line, try not to get ahead of myself -- because you're not done until you cross that line." Richtman finished at 2:07:56, while the second-place runner, Athanas Kioko of Kenya came nearly three minutes later, at 2:10:55. Both of those times surpassed the 2024 marathon winner's finish at 2:11:01. So what's next for Richtman? "We'll see. I haven't really decided yet. I'm sure I will run a marathon fairly soon here, hopefully in the fall but I really haven't decided anything going forward, just because it has been so busy so far," he said.

A busy stretch of Wilshire Boulevard officially shut down on Monday so that construction on the Metro D Line extension can continue. The full closure of Wilshire between El Camino Drive and Crescent Drive began at 12:01 a.m. Monday and work will take place nonstop (24 hours a day, seven days a week) except on holidays and during regional events, LA Metro officials said. Matt Richtman becomes first American to win Los Angeles Marathon in over 30 years Crews will be working to complete deck removal and roadway restoration for the future Wilshire/Rodeo Station, one of the seven future stations along the D Line (Purple) extension and part of the second section of the construction project, which is scheduled to open next year. Section 2 will connect the future Wilshire/La Cienega and Century City stations. Two Metro bus lines will be affected by the construction: the 20/720 bus and the 617 bus. Starting Monday, Metro Lines 20 and 720 will detour via Santa Monica Boulevard, Burton Way, and San Vicente Boulevard, with temporary stops along the route. Line 617 will reroute via Santa Monica Boulevard, Century Park East, and Olympic Boulevard, with a temporary stop at Santa Monica and Wilshire. Maps of the detours can be viewed below. The closure and bus detours will be in place through April 7. The City of Beverly Hills has a webpage with more information on the construction for residents that can be accessed here. Section 1 of the line's extension will run from Wilshire/Western to Wilshire/La Cienega – a 3.92-mile extension that will include three new stops – and is slated to open this year, according to Metro. The final stretch of the extension, which Metro says will open in 2027, will connect Century City to the D Line's future final stop, the Westwood/VA Hospital Station. Matt Richtman won the 40th annual Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, becoming the first American man to take the title in 31 years. He set a personal-best time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, 56 seconds over the course that began at Dodger Stadium and went through downtown LA, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Brentwood before ending in the Century City neighborhood. Athanas Kioko of Kenya was second in 2:10.55. Moses Kurgat of Kenya took third in 2:13.13. It was just Richtman's second marathon, following his debut last fall at the Twin Cities Marathon with a time of 2:10.47 to finish fourth. 'I didn't really have a super big plan coming into this. It's always so tough, the marathon, just because so much can happen,' Richtman said. 'I just told myself to stay in that pack until about the halfway mark and then if I felt good I could make a move. Ended up going a little bit to the lead and no one really came with me.' Richtman, of Elburn, Illinois, was a member of the Montana State cross-country team, earning All-America honors as a junior in 2022-23. American Paul Pilkington won the 1994 edition in 2:12.13. In the women's race, Tejinesh Tulu of Ethiopia took the title in 2:30.16. Antonina Kwambai of Kenya was second in 2:30.19. Savannah Berry of Orem, Utah, was third in 2:30.31. Berry finished 12th at last year's U.S. Olympic trials.

Matt Richtman makes history as first American to win Los Angeles Marathon since 1994

Matt Richtman made history Sunday by becoming the first American to win the Los Angeles Marathon since 1994, finishing with an impressive time of 2:07:56. He topped the second-largest field in race history. Tejinesh Gebisa Tulu of Ethiopia claimed victory in the women's race with a time of 2:30:16, while Antonina Kwambai of Kenya finished second at 2:30:19. Richtman, a Montana State University alumnus, achieved this victory in just his second marathon. "It's definitely a surprise," he said shortly after crossing the finish line. "I came in feeling really good, but it's tough to gauge how you compare to the competition. There was a great group out there today, and I was really happy to race with them and ultimately come out on top." The excitement surrounding the 40th annual LA Marathon was palpable as the first rays of sunshine peeked through the sky. The weather along the "Stadium to the Stars" route began with chilly temperatures in the 40s, providing a cool start for participants. However, temperatures rose later in the day into the 60s and 70s as the day went on. For many runners, this race marked the culmination of months, or even years, of training. Among the thousands of runners was Victoria Barrera, a single mother who had lost her home in the devastating Eaton Fire, but refused to let that tragedy stop her from running the race. Barrera had been waiting for this moment since October of last year, and though she had missed some training due to the fire. "You have to know why you're doing it, what your purpose is, and keep that at the forefront," she said. "This is so electrifying. All the energy, all the people. I've been waiting for this moment since I decided I was going to train for a marathon in October." Barrera joined approximately 26,000 other runners in the 26.2-mile challenge through Los Angeles. The route passed through iconic areas, like Dodger Stadium, Chinatown, downtown Los Angeles, Echo Park, Thai Town, Little Armenia, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Century City, Westwood and Brentwood then back through Westwood to Century City, with the finish line on Santa Monica Boulevard.
