Hatchet-wielding man faces charges after Boston road rage attack caught on video

Police in Boston, Massachusetts, identified a man allegedly caught on camera hitting someone's car with a hatchet in an apparent road rage incident. The Boston Police Department announced that 27-year-old Andrew Oprian had been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and willful and malicious destruction of property, according to Boston 25. Police said that Oprian allegedly chased someone with his car "at a high rate of speed" on May 16, causing the other person to crash. After allegedly causing the other car to crash, Oprian got out of his car and assaulted the victim. Oprian went on to repeatedly smash the victim's car with a hatchet, breaking the windows and windshield, according to police. Video released by the Boston Police Department shows an individual repeatedly hitting the car, which crashed into a tree. Matt Silva, who witnessed the incident, told Boston 25 the victim had no idea why the suspect was following him. "He had no idea why the guy had been following him. He had no clue. He was shocked," Silva said. "As soon as he sticks his head out of the car and pulls his key out, some random dude from behind him starts swinging a hatchet at him," he added. Silva said the suspect looked like he was enraged and couldn't be reasoned with at the time. The suspect allegedly chased the victim on the sidewalk with a hatchet, according to witnesses.

‘He kept swinging!': New surveillance shows road rage victim running from hatchet wielding suspect

New surveillance video shows another perspective of a violent road rage confrontation in Allston involving a suspect wielding a hatchet. It happened just before midnight on Friday near 1032 Commonwealth Avenue. The footage from a nearby business shows a man in a white T-shirt charging toward a crashed car with that weapon in hand. The man, believed to be the victim, is seen running for his life. Police said that victim was driving a Toyota Prius and was being followed by the suspect in a pickup truck at a high rate of speed. 'He had no idea why the guy had been following him. He had no clue. He was shocked,' said witness Matt Silva. Silva was helping the man behind the wheel of the Prius when things took a scary turn. 'We said you need to turn your car off. There's gas and oil leaking all over the place,' recalled Silva. 'As soon as he sticks his head out of the car and pulls his key out, some random dude from behind him starts swinging a hatchet at him.' Silva told Boston 25 News that the man with the hatchet appeared enraged and couldn't be reasoned with. 'He kept swinging!' said Silva. 'I was worried he was going to start going after other people.' Cell phone released by Boston Police on Sunday shows the suspect repeatedly swinging the hatchet, smashing the windows and windshield of the Prius. Witnesses told police they saw the suspect chasing the victim along the sidewalk armed with the sharp weapon. The suspect is described as about 25-years-old with a slight build, brown medium-length hair and a short beard. He was wearing a white T-shirt, with a plain front and lettering on the back, blue jeans, and brown sneakers. Police said the suspect fled on Babcock Street in the direction of Brookline. Witnesses describe scary moment man breaks car windows with hatchet following road rage in Boston

Witnesses say that it was a scary moment to watch as a man took a hatchet and began to smash a car's windows in Boston on Friday. "As soon as the guy with the hatchet showed up and started swinging at him. He ran down the street. I think it was just road rage," witness Matt Silva said. Boston Police say the incident happened around 11:45 p.m. on Friday on Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton. The victim told police that he was driven off the road by a man in a pickup truck before he crashed into a tree. Silva says he was coming out of Hen restaurant when he saw the man with the hatchet smashing the victim's windows, which sent the driver running for his life. "He was scared out of his mind. He was screaming, 'I don't know what to do,'" Silva explained. Video shows the victim sprinting away, before the suspect begins walking in the same direction with the hatchet. "So he ran down the street about a mile or so, and the guy comes back smashing up his windows all over again, I think maybe two or three times that he came back smashing the windows," Silva said. Police searching for suspect Police said that the suspect fled the area towards Babcock Street. The driver was not seriously injured and denied further medical treatment. "Just so scary. You should get out of your car and try to help instead of being so aggressive," said Fernando Silva, who manages the restaurant where the road rage incident took place in front of. "I think that there's a lot of unwell people out there that are going around. People really need to kind of get a lid on it," Silva said. The suspect is described as a white man around 25 years old with a beard and brownish hair. They say he is short-to-average height and wore a white t-shirt with the words "Natural Flow" on the back, brown sneakers, and dark blue jeans. Police are still investigating the incident and are asking for the public's help to identify the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call 617-343-4500.
