TASTE TEST: Prestatyn's hidden gem Tudor House
I had several places in mind, Prestatyn really has an excellent array of eateries, from fine dining at Dishes to one of the best Asian restaurants in North Wales, Chynna Garden. But amid the multi-coloured Pride flags, my attention was drawn to two bird cages. Bird outside Tudor House (Image: Matt Warner) What kind of café has exotic birds at the door? Birdcage at Tudor House (Image: Matt Warner)Tudor House does, and there is so much more eccentricity within. So, thanks to those two colourful birds, the decision was made. The place was decked out in rainbows to celebrate Prestatyn's first Pride, as were the majority of the High Street's businesses that day. Tudor House like many businesses in town was decorated for Prestatyn Pride (Image: Matt Warner)It's great to see a local business that is at the heart of the community, and a quick look on the Tudor's social media suggest that's exactly where it is. Quizzes and other events on special days like D-Day, Valentine's, and Christmas, raising money for local charities like Help Hedgehogs Prestatyn, seem to be a regular part of the Tudor's social calendar. The Tudor's website tells me it is run by Paul and Ivor, who say: "We can't wait to welcome you, so join us at the top of the High Street as soon as you can, once you've been once, you'll be looking forward to your next visit. See you soon!" Words like "unique" and terms like "hidden gem" are overused in reviews like these. ROOM FOR MORE? But when applied to Tudor House they perfectly describe the venue. The decor is as eclectic as any I've seen, as if several personalities are fighting to put their stamp on the space. The fish tank at Tudor House (Image: Matt Warner) There is a giant fish tank that wouldn't look out of place in an aquarium, a baby grand white piano on a raised stage, the aforementioned exotic birds on the door, and a mini-library. Fancy a read? (Image: Matt Warner)I can say with confidence that there is no place quite like it. The baby grand at Tudor House (Image: Matt Warner)I ordered the sausage and mash. Bangers and mash at Tudor House (Image: Matt Warner)While the dish wasn't as flamboyant as the surroundings by any meal, it was a hearty plate of food, the type of comforting grub my nan would make. And that is high praise indeed as some of my most fondly remembered meals were eaten from my lap while watching Blockbusters. The sausages were girthy and well-cooked, the mash buttery, and there was plenty of both. Could it have had more gravy? For me, always, but the mash was smooth enough that it didn't need additional lubrication. I didn't go for dessert, but could see a range of ice creams and homemade desserts were no offer that I will be sure to sample next time I visit. Tudor House has a Tripadvisor rating of 4 based on 168 reviews. "Lovely place brilliant food excellent value. Can't fault it friendly staff good service. Well worth a visit any time of day breakfast or lunch. Afternoon teas good too." "Fabulous place, good food, very friendly staff, great coffee. For a 'drop in coffee' or planned meal, it's great. Never had a bad experience at the Tudor Well done." "We have visited the Tudor House multiple times, and it never disappoints! There is a wide selection of foods and beverages with consistant excellent quality."

TASTE TEST: Cake and Coffee by Cheesecake Creations
If my eight-year-old niece was asked to design a cake shop this would be it - but with added flamingos. It's definitely the type of shop that brings a smile to people's faces and brightens up the High Street - even one as varied and vibrant as Prestatyn's. The cafe was even more colourful on the day I visited, having been decorated for Prestatyn's first Pride. (Image: Matt Warner) It's always great to see local businesses getting on board with events and celebrations close to the community's heart, as the majority in town had. Inside the cafe, it is colourful and cosy, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. I was familiar with Cakes and Coffee, it having opened in 2023, but I have never been in myself. Run by former NHS worker Julie Ivers-Ellis, Cake and Coffee's speciality is cheesecakes. But there is so many other cake slices on offer, such as chocolate sponge, Victoria sponge, carrot cake, coffee cake, lemon and blueberry cake, and banana loaf. (Image: Matt Warner) On this occasion, to celebrate Pride, there was a rainbow cake that looked spectacular and had obviously been very popular. Not to mention flapjacks, brownies, blondies, cookies, and pastries, as well as light bites like crumpets, tea cakes and toast with a selection of jam. All of the tempting slices and treats on offer are paired with a 'mug run' coffee sourced from suppliers Aisha and Tim from the area. Having spun out from Julie's lockdown business Cheesecake Creations, I felt it only fitting to try a slice of cheesecake. (Image: Matt Warner) I was tempted by one of the special cheesecakes on offer, opting for a sweet treat that looked like an explosion of strawberry. It terms of its appearance, the slice brought to me was fantastic, adorned with strawberries, cream, sauce, and topped with half a cake. It stuck me how rare it is to be given a slice of cake that is taller than it is long. As spectacular as the style was, nothing had been lost in terms of substance. It was one of the best cheesecakes I have had. A heady cocktail of sweetness and different textures, from the fresh bite of fruit through the rich cream and crumbly base, that was most enjoyable. (Image: Matt Warner)The coffee too was great, rich and mellow, with non-dairy milk alternatives to choose from. (Image: Matt Warner)I can see why Cake and Coffee is so popular. Once visited, I can see it becoming many people's sweet treat spot of choice when they are in the mood for something a little fun and indulgent. Cake and Coffee has a Tripadvisor rating of 4.9 out of five based on 14 reviews. It has been rating a maximum of 5 starts for hygiene by the Food Standards Agency. "Absolutely adore this little gem of a cake & coffee shop. The cakes are honestly some of the best I've ever had, the only problem is trying to choose which one to go for. The staff are always so lovely and friendly, and the option to grab a takeaway is such a bonus. Small, cute and super cosy, a perfect little sweet treat spot." "Literally the best cakes and cheesecakes we have ever tasted, including the gluten free ones! The owners/staff are such lovely, welcoming people. This is one of my favourite places which is a bit of a drive for me but worth it!" "The local coffee is excellent, the atmosphere is cosy, and your warm welcome is unmatched. Of course, the cake is fabulous. What more could you ask for? If you visit Prestatyn, be sure to try it—you won't be disappointed!"
