A 36-year-old Pictou County man is facing charges after he allegedly jumped from a bridge while intoxicated and then assaulted a police officer during his arrest.
New Glasgow Regional Police and the New Glasgow Fire Department responded to a report that someone has jumped from the George Street Bridge into the East River in New Glasgow, N.S., around 12:45 a.m. on Aug. 3 – during The Jubilee music festival.
Once recovered from the water, police determined the man was intoxicated. While arresting the man for public intoxication, police say he resisted arrest and assaulted one of the officers.
Matthew Angus MacGillivray is facing the following charges:
public intoxication
resisting arrest
assaulting a police officer
MacGillivray was released from custody on conditions. He is due to appear in Pictou provincial court on Oct. 27.
Arrests at The Jubilee
Overall, New Glasgow Regional Police says they responded to 120 calls for service – mostly related to Liquor Control Act violations and minor disturbances – over The Jubilee weekend.
Police arrested seven people, mostly for public intoxication and breaches of court conditions.
Police say the incident involving the man who jumped from the bridge was the only serious incident during the annual three-day music festival.
