Where is the Criminal Minds cast now? Five years on since the series ended

Criminal Minds was cancelled in 2020, but returned for a spin-off series Criminal Minds: Evolution two years later. As the series is now free to stream on Channel 5, here's everything you need to know about the beloved cast. Criminal Minds first aired in September 2005, and now nearly 20 years on the show still remains a fan favourite. The show was originally cancelled in 2020, but fans were so outraged by the decision to take it off air that it returned two years later for a spin-off show - Criminal Minds: Evolution. Created by Jeff Davis, Criminal Minds follows a team of criminal profilers who work for the FBI's Behavioural Analysis Unit (BAU) to investigate crimes, as they anticipate the next moves of the criminals across the United States and stop them before they strike again. ‌ Each episode of the show focuses on a new case with the cast trying to bust the criminal, and explores the personal lives of various characters. ‌ There are some major cast and character changes over the years, but the much-loved OG cast members have stayed the same. With the likes of Kirsten Vangsness, Matthew Gray Gubler, A.J Cook, Joe Mantegna, Thomas Gibson, Shemar Moore and Paget Brewster. Here is everything you need to know about where the cast of Criminal Minds are now? ‌ Matthew Gray Gubler Matthew played Dr Spencer Reid and stared in season one to season 15, and he quickly became a fan favourite. Dr Reid was a genius who graduated high school at the age of 12 and had two bachelors degrees and three PHDs, as well as being a respected member of the BAU. In addition to his role in the show, he went on to appear in multiple movies - RV, (500) Days of Summer, Life after Beth and Zoe. Matthew also voiced the beloved character Simon in all four Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. ‌ A.J Cook A.J was just 27 when the show premiered in 2005 and remained as a main character until season six where she left the team to take on a job at the Pentagon, although she was actually cut from the show due to cost cutting reasons by CBS. Although she returned the following season after fans complained that they were missing her on screen as special agent Jennifer Jareau a.k.a. "JJ". ‌ Since appearing on Criminal Minds, A.J has went on to star in episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and 9-1-1 and as well as appearing on films such as Least Among Saints and Mother's Day. She has two children with her husband Nathan Andersen, alongside her two sons who play her children in the show, she returned for the spin-off show Criminal Minds: Evolution. Kirsten Vangsness ‌ Kirsten played the eccentric tech analyst and communications liaison Penelope Garcia, and appeared on the show throughout all 15 seasons. She was highly loved by fans for her hilarious comedic timing along with her flirtation with Derek Morgan, who was played by Shemar Moor. She is currently staring in the Paramount+ revival of Criminal Minds: Evolution, as well as appearing in The Chicago 8 and Kill Me, Deadly series. Thomas Gibson ‌ Thomas played the troubled Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner on the show from season 1 to 12, but was eventually fired from the show due to an physical altercation on set. Back in 2010, the now 62-year-old was accused of shoving the assistant director on set but was permitted to remain on the show after completing anger management classes. However, in 2016, during the show's twelfth season, he was dismissed after kicking a co-executive producer in the shin during a heated confrontation. ‌ Joe Mantegna Joe joined the cast during season 3 of the show, and quickly became a fan favourite with his character David Rossi becoming a father like figure among the group of FBI agents. The Tony Award winning actor took to X (formally known as Twitter) after filming his final scene for the show in 2019, writing: "I will miss playing David Rossi, and I'll miss the wonderful writing that brought him to life, but mostly I will miss seeing my fellow cast mates and our fantastic crew every day. It may seem a cliché to say we're like family, but it's so very true." ‌ He went on to star in As We See It and he continues to voice the character Fat Tony in The Simpsons, a role which he has had since 1991. Joe has also returned for the spin-off series along with his other cast member - AJ and Kirsten . ‌ Paget Brewster Paget's character Emily Prentiss had multiple exit's and reappearance's throughout her time on Criminal Minds. Although she finally returned in season 12 and stayed as a regular through to the final season of the show. Paget is a well known voice actress outside of her role in Criminal Minds, voicing characters in American Dad!, Adventure Time, Family Guy, DuckTales and Birdgirl. ‌ She also rejoined the serious for the spinoff show. Shemar Moore Shemar's character Derek Morgan was known as a heartthrob in the show, he appeared in season 1 through to 11 as a set character and continued appearing as a guest throughout seasons 12 and 13. He went on to voice the DC Comics character Cyborg in the Justice League animated movies, as well as staring in S.W.A.T and returning to The Young and the Restless - the soap that launched his career and earned him an Emmy Award back in 2000.

Criminal Minds: The Surprising Story Behind That Shocking Will Scene

There was a funny moment during my recent Zoom with Criminal Minds: Evolution star (and TVLine Performer of the Week honorable mention) A.J. Cook, to discuss JJ tragically losing her husband Will after 18 years together. She and I were talking about the late Linda Lavin guest-starring as WIll's mother Connie… and franchise vet Matthew Gray Gubler's cameo as Spencer… when I quipped about her TV husband's unexpected Episode 2 encore: More from TVLine Criminal Minds: A.J. Cook Opens Up About JJ's Loss, Her Real-Life Sons Playing 'Big Emotions,' and Negotiating That Brief Cameo All Stars 10 Is the Best Drag Race Season in Years - and It's About to Get Even Better (Exclusive Sneak Peek) Criminal Minds: Who Made a Surprise Appearance at Will's Funeral? 'When Josh [Stewart] showed up, was he like, 'Hey, how are you doing? I'm here to die'?' Because I, like at least some of you, was curious about Stewart returning to set for Will's migraine/collapse in the kitchen. Except, Cook was quick to correct me, Stewart did not return for that scene. Once the decision was made to kill off Will (via a rare kind of aneurysm), it was agreed that it would be impolite to ask Stewart — who was famously MIA from Season 17 — back just for a brief, sad moment. Instead, a deleted scene from Evolution's first season was used. 'People don't know this, I guess,' Cook said, clocking my confusion over Stewart's Episode 2 appearance. 'But he wasn't coming back to the show,' and as such, 'Our writers had to get very creative. 'Remember the cancer storyline that we wrote in [during Evolution's first season]?' reminded Cook. 'We so badly were like, 'We don't want [Josh] to think he's going to die,' we got so freaked out by it, that we pulled this scene [of Will collapsing]. That's how much we did not want Josh to leave us.' But when Will's number indeed came up early into Season 18, 'our brilliant showrunner [Erica Messer] was like, 'Oh my gosh, we have this scene that we never used…,'' Cook recalled. 'Erica Messer put the pieces of a really complicated puzzle together, and it worked,' Cook continued. 'It's weird how it happened that way, but that just goes to show how much we just did not want any more pain to come to this family' — at least back in Season 1. Matthew Gray Gubler Is Returning To Criminal Minds, But His New CBS Show Just Got Some Bad News

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Matthew Gray Gubler was a regular fixture on television for well over a decade thanks to his years as Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds, and he's been set to return to his old CBS stomping grounds since late 2024. Alas, he won't be back in primetime by the end of the 2025 TV schedule due to some delays with his new show, but fans can at least look forward to seeing him back with his old Criminal Minds castmates in the not-too-distant future. News broke back in late 2024 that Matthew Gray Gubler would be reprising his role as Spencer Reid for the third season of Criminal Minds: Evolution, which arrives streaming with a Paramount+ subscription in May. Fans who have been missing the character can look forward to seeing him in the flesh after the Easter egg in Season 2 and what showrunner Erica Messer told us. That said, Gubler's reveal suggested that he'd only be back for one episode of Season 3, so fans shouldn't count on seeing him back on a weekly basis to make the most of all the violence and F-bombs that are possible with Criminal Minds streaming on Paramount+ instead of airing on CBS. Whether it could lead to more down the road remains to be seen, and a lot could depend on what brings Reid back in the first place, but we can only speculate for now. What we don't have to wonder about is whether we can expect Gubler back on CBS before the end of the year. Matthew Gray Gubler landed the lead role of CBS' Einstein back in 2024 to play Lew Einstein, the great grandson of the famous physicist. The new crime procedural received a series order and was set to premiere during the 2025-2026 TV season. Now, TVLine reports that Gubler's return to CBS has been delayed until the 2026-2027 season. This isn't due to any problems with the Einstein production, though. The outlet reports that Einstein was simply edged out because CBS has more shows than available primetime slots, despite the cancellations of FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International, and Blue Bloods. Einstein was reportedly chosen for the delay to 2026-2027 because a longer pre-production window could benefit the new series. I'm a little bummed about the premiere being pushed back after seeing what CBS has done with Watson and its twist on medical procedural stories. Why not Einstein with its twist on crime procedurals? CBS is expected to announce the full fall schedule with the shows that did make the cut for the 2025-2026 TV lineup on Wednesday, May 7. Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 – or Season 18 overall – will premiere on Paramount+ on May 8. It hasn't been confirmed at the time of writing which episode will feature Spencer Reid, but the showrunner's plans for Voit after how Season 2 ended combined with the early renewal for Season 4 suggest a bright future for the streaming series, Reid or no Reid.

'Einstein' drama starring Matthew Gray Gubler delayed to 2026-27 season

CBS has announced that its recently ordered procedural drama 'Einstein' will not premiere next season as initially planned. The network has decided to postpone the show until the 2026-27 season due to scheduling constraints, as per Deadline. The decision to delay 'Einstein' comes after CBS began assembling its schedule for the 2025-26 season. The network reportedly didn't have enough space on its schedule to fit the show in. Despite the delay, CBS is moving forward with other new series, including the workplace comedy 'DMV,' which is still set to premiere next season. CBS will have a busy schedule ahead, with three other new dramas set to premiere in the 2025-26 season. These include 'Boston Blue,' a spinoff of 'Blue Bloods'; 'CIA,' set in the same fictional universe as 'FBI'; and 'Sheriff Country,' a spinoff of 'Fire Country.' The network has also renewed a dozen scripted series and will continue to air reality staples like 'Survivor' and 'The Amazing Race.' 'Einstein' stars Matthew Gray Gubler as Lewis Einstein, the great-grandson of Albert Einstein and a tenured professor at Princeton who gets involved in solving puzzling cases with a detective played by Rosa Salazar . The show is produced by CBS Studios and created by Andy Breckman, with executive producers including Randy Zisk, Tariq Jalil, and Rose Hughes.

Matthew Gray Gubler's Einstein Delayed at CBS Until 2026-27 Season — Find Out Why

Matthew Gray Gubler won't be able to show off his big brain as CBS' Einstein for a while. The new crime procedural, which earned a series order at the Eye network last week, will now be held until the 2026-27 TV season, TVLine has learned. The reason? Too many shows in the pipeline at CBS. NCIS: Origins' Mariel Molino Shares What Was Most Heartbreaking About Finale, Why She's 'Proud' of Final Shot As the schedule was being assembled, it was determined that limited shelf space created an opportunity for Einstein to benefit from a longer pre-production window, similar to other series greenlights in the past, according to a source. Einstein stars Gubler as Albert Einstein's 'brilliant but directionless' great-grandson Lewis, who 'spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad boy antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases,' per the official logline. Rosa Salazar (Parenthood, Undone) co-stars as Veronica 'Ronni' Paris, a Detective Inspector for the New Jersey State Police 'who went into law enforcement after the death of her husband.' Based on the German dramedy of the same name, Einstein is being adapted by Monk creator Andy Breckman and executive producer/director Randy Zisk. Along with Einstein, CBS also picked up the FBI offshoot CIA (starring Lucifer's Tom Ellis) and the Harriet Dyer comedy DMV for next season. The network's full fall schedule will be unveiled on Wednesday, May 7. Best of TVLine Yellowjackets Mysteries: An Up-to-Date List of the Series' Biggest Questions (and Answers?)
