'Considering Matthew Shepard' begins with notes that mimic the landscape of rural Wyoming — the twang of an old television western, the haunting shrill of a yodel.
It's the start of a stirring oratorio that evokes the life of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old man who became the victim of an LGBTQ-targeted hate crime in 1998. His tortured body was found lying next to a doe after he was brutally attacked by two men.
