All the Usk Cricket Club results from the past weekend

South Wales Premier League Division 1 USK CC took on three matches in three different competitions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday - and won them all. On Friday, they beat hosts Newbridge by 45 runs in the first round of the T20 Cup. After winning the toss, the home skipper decided to ask Usk to bat first and despite an early breakthrough opener Harswel Ahmed Wassam added a useful 54 runs. Tamoor Zafar (13) and Matthew Williams (22) kept the scoreboard ticking over and Ollie Rayner added 32 before being caught and bowled. Usk's innings ended on 166-7 with Matt Hancock and Sam Crisp unbeaten on 11 and six respectively. In reply, Newbridge lost wickets regularly thanks to Zafar (2-28), Crisp (1-18) and Rayner (1-8 and two maidens) and tumbled to defeat 121-6. Usk skipper Elliott Doyle said the pitch was very difficult to bat on, but there was a positive performance. 'Harawal Wassam is scoring runs effortlessly at the moment, a real class apart from everyone else today. It's great fun watching him,' he said. A day later, Usk players took on Ynystawe on their own ground, restricting the hosts to 114 all out, a total that Usk passed, losing only three wickets in the process to win by seven wickets. Ollie Rayner took 4-25 with one maiden while Matthew Marriott (3-25), Billy Root (2-44 and one maiden) and Tamoor Zafar took a wicket with just three deliveries and Ben Jones's six overs cost just 20 runs and included a maiden. In reply, Hugo Caldicott scored 61 off 66 deliveries and Rayner was 27 not out and Root added 15 before being caught. On Sunday, Usk played a Group 10 match at Bath in the ECB National Club Championship. After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Hugo Caldicott scored 62 but lost opening partner Matthew Williams early on. He was replaced by Ollie Rayner who added 27 and Harawal Ahmed Wassam chipped in with a run-a-ball 59 runs and skipper Elliott Doyle added a valuable 22 runs and the 40-over innings ended with Usk on 243-7. In a nail-biting finish, Bath's innings ended on 228 all out - 15 runs behind thanks to Ben Jones 3-42 with one maiden, Tamoor Zafar (3-44), Matthew Marriott (2-41) and Matthew Williams (2-53). Doyle said: "The win at Bath was the best game of my life, best game of any of our lives, I think. Absolutely outstanding game of cricket. Ben Jones at third man took the winning catch."

Shooters' opening weekend mixed bag

Oamaru duck-shooter Matthew Williams holds a mallard duck and paradise duck harvested from All Day Bay Lagoon near Kakanui on opening morning. PHOTO: RHYS ADAMS/FISH & GAME It was a mixed bag for North Otago duck-shooters at the start of the season at the weekend. On Saturday, the opening day of the 2025 game bird shooting season, a team from Central South Island Fish & Game was operating in the Maheno area, south of Oamaru. "Opening-day weather was pleasant for hunting and socialising with clear skies and a moderate breeze from the west, helping to put movement in hunters' decoys and direction for the birds to land," a Fish & Game spokesperson said. "In comparison to last year's drought conditions, which left many ponds dry and hunters out of options, the wet autumn provided great water levels, and many hunters were out enjoying their opening. "Farmer Mike Holland, of Waianakarua, hunted his farm pond with family, including 4-year-old grandson Franklin Attfield and their canine companion. On Mike's second farm pond, several visiting and local hunters enjoyed their morning, harvesting a mix of mallard duck, paradise shelduck and Canada geese." Nearby, in Maheno, three generations of the Hunt family enjoyed their first opening on the pond of their new property. Of significance was 5-year-old Douglas Hunt's first opening-day experience. He really enjoyed helping gundog Charlie retrieve the ducks that fell behind the pond into the paddock. Oamaru man Mathew Williams hunted the Fish & Game-owned All Day Bag Lagoon near Kakanui with success. Mathew was one of three parties who were granted opening weekend hunting rights to the lagoon through an annual ballot administered by Central South Island Fish & Game. "Rangers checked on 28 hunters, a mix of local and visiting hunters. Although the majority of hunters were fully compliant with the hunting regulations, three hunters were found offending, being in possession of lead ammunition, while hunting within 200m of open water. "Hunters' harvests were mixed, with most harvesting a mallard duck or paradise shelduck by noon on Saturday. "Preliminary data from the game bird harvest survey indicates hunters across the region harvested about nine mallards and three paradise shelduck each, on average, for the weekend [two days]." The occasional black swan, pūkeko and New Zealand shoveler duck were also harvested. "Central South Island Fish & Game has issued 2282 combined adult and junior 2025 game bird hunting licences. This is a moderate number and up by approximately 10% on last season which was impacted by drought with many dry ponds resulting in reduced hunting opportunity." The main game bird season is open until July 27. Day game bird hunting licences are on sale from Monday. The Central South Island region includes the Waitaki Valley and areas North of Shag Point and including the Waianakarua and Kakanui catchments. The Otago Fish & Game region extends south of Shag Point. Hunting regulations vary between Fish & Game regions and hunters are reminded to check the game bird hunting regulations before going hunting. Any clarification should be sought from a Fish & Game office. — APL

Memphis Allies hosts conference to tackle crime and gun violence

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Allies hosted its Breakthrough Conference on Tuesday, in which local and national leaders shared ways to combat crime, at a time when Memphis has already seen nearly triple-digit homicides in 2025. At the beginning of April, 22-year-old Matthew Williams was killed in a mass shooting in Southeast Memphis. 1 dead, 5 men injured in Southeast Memphis shooting More specifically, it happened outside the site of Memphis Allies, a nonprofit organization focused on reducing gun violence and homicides. 'Most Memphians know violence has been a problem in our city for a while now, and in recent weeks, we have had an increase in violence, so we are bringing hope to the community,' said Susan Deason, Executive Director of Memphis Allies. Deason says that hope looks like this: local leaders, community groups, and many more joining forces. 'It's a convening of organizations who are out there on the streets getting the work done to save lives,' she said. It's a push that's needed now more than ever. Already this year, detectives have been tasked with investigating 97 homicides since January 1. One of them was Williams, who was killed, with five others hurt, in a mass shooting outside the Memphis Allies headquarters. CrimeStoppers offers $25K for info on shooting at anti-gun violence meeting 'We don't let the circumstances push us away from the mission because there are a whole lot of people out there who will never know our names, and we are in here fighting for them,' said Mayor Young. 'We are trying to turn a very, very, very big ship,' Young said. 'A ship that's been navigating turbulent waters for years. But this conference is focused on igniting hope in this community, in order to inspire action.' This two-day conference will undoubtedly be jam-packed, organizers say, for those willing to carry the load and for those willing to have difficult discussions, in order to get things on a more positive path. 'I want the next two days to be about some real talk. I want us to have real conversations, because it's real out there,' said Young. This is the third year for the Breakthrough conference, with an estimated 400 to 500 attendees expected to participate. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
