Ex-Wire forward's NRL breakthrough hit by serious injury

FORMER Warrington Wolves forward Matty Nicholson has seen his NRL breakthrough cruelly disrupted by a major injury. The second-rower has been in stellar form for Canberra Raiders since joining them from The Wire for 2025, scoring five tries in nine appearances for the Green Machine. His performances have helped Ricky Stuart's side to sit fourth on the NRL ladder after 10 matches, but he limped off during their defeat to Canterbury Bulldogs at the weekend. Now, the Raiders have confirmed that Nicholson has suffered a fractured fibula as well as a syndesmosis injury to his ankle and will miss up to 12 weeks of action. That would mean a return at the start of August, putting him in the frame to feature in the NRL play-offs should Canberra secure their place. News of Nicholson's injury will also be of concern to England head coach Shaun Wane, with the 21-year-old seemingly certain to be in contention for the season-ending Ashes series against Australia to add to the two caps he won during his two-and-a-half years as a Warrington player.

Blow for Raiders as prized import face three months out

Canberra's unlikely, charmed run to the NRL's top four has hit an early roadblock with English import Matty Nicholson facing three months on the sideline. Back-rower Nicholson has been a revelation since arriving at Canberra from Super League club Warrington over the off-season. The 21-year-old Yorkshireman has made a spot on the Raiders' right edge his own, registering five tries in nine games. But Nicholson is now staring at a prolonged absence from the NRL after sustaining an ankle injury and fracture to his fibula in last weekend's loss to Canterbury. Zac Hosking looms as the most likely option for coach Ricky Stuart to turn to with the ex-Penrith and Brisbane forward proving a versatile option for the Green Machine this season. Nicholson's absence will be a mighty blow to Stuart's side who have confounded pre-season expectations to sit in the top four. The Raiders (7-3) play struggling Gold Coast on Sunday in what will represent the last chance for Nicholson's fellow second-rower Hudson Young the chance to press his claims for a NSW State of Origin recall. Watch ex-Warrington Wolves forward make an immediate impact on NRL debut

FORMER Warrington Wolves forward Matty Nicholson made an immediate impact on the NRL on Saturday morning and in the process, he kept an impressive personal streak going. The 21-year-old back-rower made his Canberra Raiders debut in their Round Two clash against Brisbane Broncos and having initially been named on the bench, he was promoted to the starting side by head coach Ricky Stuart. And Nicholson repaid him in spades by scoring two tries in Canberra's 32-22 victory at GIO Stadium, which means they have now won both of their NRL matches this season. Starting in the right-edge berth he made his own during his successful two-and-a-half seasons at The Halliwell Jones Stadium, Nicholson took just eight minutes to open his try-scoring account as he was sent through a hole by Jamal Fogarty. Nicholson scores again! 🔥#NRLRaidersBroncos — NRL (@NRL) March 15, 2025 It now means Nicholson has scored tries on his competitive debut for each of the three clubs he has played for – he marked his Wire bow with two tries against Catalans Dragons at Magic Weekend 2022 while he also scored a try on his Wigan Warriors debut against Huddersfield Giants back in 2021.
