Tribal uprising grows as thousands reject Pakistan's failed military solutions in Waziristan and Mohmand
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa [Pakistan], July 19 (ANI): Thousands of people across Mohmand, North Waziristan, and South Waziristan took to the streets on Friday in large-scale peace rallies, rejecting any fresh military operations and warning against further displacement of local communities, Dawn News reported. In Mohmand district's Mian Mandi Bazaar (Halimzai tehsil), a massive rally brought together tribal elders, political leaders, and civil society members under one voice. Leaders from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Awami National Party (ANP), and Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) joined hands to declare that the state had failed to deliver peace in the tribal belt, Dawn News reported. 'We pay taxes and abide by the law. All we ask for is peace in our homeland,' said local JI leader Firdous Safi. The killing of Maulana Khan Zeb, a respected voice for tribal rights and peace, was widely condemned. In North Waziristan, the Utmanzai Jirga Aman Pasoon held a demonstration in Miramshah, reiterating their opposition to any new military campaign. Spokesperson Mufti Baitullah stated that past operations like Zarb-i-Azb had not resolved the region's issues. 'We won't allow another military operation,' he said. The jirga demanded the release of elder Malik Akbar Khan, imprisoned for eight months, calling it essential for rebuilding trust with the government, Dawn News noted. Baitullah also announced the next protest would be held in Dattakhel, where residents have endured an 11-day curfew, severely restricting movement and livelihoods. Meanwhile, in Lower South Waziristan, an eight-day sit-in at Wana Bypass Chowk ended after successful negotiations between protest leaders and government officials. According to Dawn News, the district administration agreed to reopen the Angoor Adda border crossing, address law and order concerns, and affirm tribal ownership of local mineral resources. South Waziristan Chamber of Commerce president Saifur Rehman Wazir said the prolonged closure of Angoor Adda had devastated trade. 'Markets have collapsed, and traders suffered losses worth billions,' he stated. As Dawn News highlighted, these peaceful yet defiant demonstrations underscore widespread frustration and demand for peace, rights, and dignity across the tribal districts. (ANI)

ANP to convene 'Pakhtun Jirga', APC
The Awami National Party (ANP) has announced it will convene a Pakhtun Jirga in Peshawar and an All Parties Conference (APC) in Islamabad over the deteriorating law and order situation in the province, target killings, minerals bill, provincial rights and the possible abolition of the 18th Amendment. ANP President Aimal Wali Khan held the state responsible for the murder of senior party leader Maulana Khan Zeb in Bajaur. He said he will write a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to investigate the murder. A think-tank meeting of ANP was chaired by Aimal Wali Khan on Tuesday. The meeting discussed the law and order situation. After the meeting, The ANP chief addressed a press conference along with former chief minister Haider Hoti, Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour and other members of the think-tank. They said ANP's central secretary for Ulema Affairs Maulana Khan Zeb was killed in a tragic incident in Bajaur. The incident occurred at a place, which is considered as the stronghold of state institutions. Surprisingly, not only did the killers disappear immediately after the incident, all the CCTV cameras installed at the location also vanished. The people of Bajaur believe that state actors are involved in the murder, the ANP leaders noted. They demanded that a powerful judicial commission headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan be formed if the state truly has no role in the recent killing. They also insisted to include a member of Maulana Khanzeb's family in the proposed commission to ensure transparency and justice for the family. The ANP leaders said their workers are being killed, but the culprits are not being traced. Neither Taliban nor ISIS has claimed responsibility for Maulana Khanzeb's murder, they added, asking if both the entities are denying their role, who is the killer then? They demanded that the name and face of the person involved in the murder be brought to light. They indicated to approach international forums if justice is not provided within the country. They announced that ANP will convene a Pakhtun Jirga in Peshawar and an All Parties Conference (APC) in Islamabad, with dates to be revealed soon. "It is a delusion of those who think they can force us to retreat from the 18th or 25th Constitutional Amendments through intimidation, terrorism and killing," said the ANP leaders. They added that the entire nation knows who is behind terrorism from Waziristan to Bajaur and what their objectives are. They warned of street agitation if a judicial commission is not formed to investigate the murder. "We won't budge up a little even if we are thrown out of parliament or deleted from Form 45 and Form 47," the ANP leaders vowed. The ANP has proven through its opposition to the Mines and Minerals Bill that no law can be passed without its consent, they highlighted. They also pointed out that ANP leaders are being tempted to join other parties with promises of greener pastures.

Fazl provides grist to rumour mill over K-P govt fate
Amid swirling rumours of a brewing "regime change" in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Saturday threw his weight behind the idea of political change in the PTI-led province, but with a caveat that the change must come from within the ruling party itself. Dismissing the notion of backdoor manoeuvring, the Maulana asserted that the legitimacy cannot be handed down by "boots" but must stem from the will of the people. He further lambasted both the federal and provincial governments as having "sold out". "We do not want a government handed to us by the boots, we want one backed by the people." Addressing a news conference in Peshawar, the JUI-F chief said the law-and-order situation across the country was rapidly deteriorating. "Fresh news is always about some kind of unrest," he said, citing the recent killing of an ANP politician, Maulana Khan Zeb, in Bajaur, worsening instability in Balochistan and unrest in Sindh. "We know for a fact that the ruling elite is paying extortion money to extremist groups," he claimed. The JUI-F chief said that political change in K-P was essential, whether it comes from within the ruling PTI or through external political realignment. "My preference is change in the province. If it comes from within the ruling party, that's fine too," he added. Referring to incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan, he said, "If his children come to Pakistan, I have no objection," adding that politics involves differences, not enmity. "We may disagree with the PML-N, PPP or PTI, but we always keep the door open for dialogue, even the PTI people come and talk to me," he said. The Maulana further claimed the province enjoyed full peace during his government's tenure. "You could travel anywhere without incident. There were no police checkpoints. No terrorism. Peace prevailed," he recalled. He also called for an all-parties conference to discuss law and order. Regarding the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) merger with K-P, he said it was a "wrong decision" taken under pressure and signals, and all political parties must now admit it. "Everyone joined the bandwagon, thinking the FATA merger was a good idea. We kept saying it wasn't. Now, reversing that mistake is in the national interest," he advised. He expressed frustration that, even after eight years, FATA still lacked basic administration. "No patwari can go there even today. We were told land records are being compiled in FATA — when I asked how, I was told it's being done using satellites." The JUI-F leader pointed out that a grand tribal jirga was going to be held on Sunday, saying his party respected such forums. "We had always wanted decisions about FATA's political future to be taken with input from its tribal elders, not through unilateral decisions." He said his party had been recognised as a stakeholder in the government's committee on FATA, and that it had been asked to nominate representatives. "But how many members on the committee are actually from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or even Pashtun?" he questioned. "The province's money is only being used to appoint parliamentary secretaries and for luxuries. This is an extortion-backed, rigged government." When asked about jailed politicians, he said that no politician should be behind bars, "but yes, politicians do go to jail. However, political movements are not just about getting released, they are waged for great causes".
