Minnesota Vikings Preseason Game 1: Grading rookie performances against Texans

The Minnesota Vikings' rookie draft class got their first NFL action in Saturday's 20-10 victory over the Houston Texans. Four of their five picks played, as tight end Gavin Bartholomew remains on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list with a back injury. Some of the notable undrafted free agents made their impact felt as well, notably Max Brosmer, the former Minnesota Golden Gophers quarterback. We'll grade the picks, as well as some of the notable undrafted guys, below. Donovan Jackson Grade: C- Jackson only played the first series. On 12 snaps, he allowed one pressure, presumably a play where he tripped on center Ryan Kelly's foot. Jackson was Minnesota's second-lowest graded offensive player according to PFF with a 44.5 grade. We'll attribute this to rookie nerves and not overreact to the limited sample size. Tai Felton Grade: B+ Felton caught two passes for 14 yards that went for two first downs. But his most impactful play came when he dislodged a ball that Texans returner Jawhar Jordan struggled to bring in on a punt return. Felton's role on the offense will hopefully grow as the season progresses, but he can make an immediate impact on special teams if he continues making plays like that. Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins Grade: C Ingram-Dawkins registered one tackle, per PFF. Most notable was his alignment, lining up over the offensive tackle 12 times, a defensive tackle eight times, and as a nose tackle once. He received a 62.5 PFF grade. Kobe King Grade: B- King played 29 snaps on defense, receiving a 69.0 PFF grade after registering two tackles and a QB pressure. Max Brosmer Grade: A- PFF was rough on Brosmer, giving him the lowest grade among all offensive players. But he was 5/8 passing for 47 yards and a touchdown, displaying poise and throwing into tight windows downfield to either extend drives or to give receivers opportunities to make plays. Silas Bolden Grade: D Bolden's chances to make the roster increased after the unfortunate injury to Rondale Moore. However, he struggled in his limited opportunities on offense. He caught one pass for three yards but dropped a beautiful pass from Brosmer later in the game. Bolden had one return for eight yards, which will be his best chance of making the roster. But he has to take advantage of every pass thrown his way to justify the roster spot on a pass-first team. Tyler Batty Grade: B Batty received an average grade from PFF, getting a 59.9 score. But although he generated a QB pressure, his biggest play came when he deflected a slant pass that was intercepted by safety Kahlef Hailassie. Minnesota Vikings training camp notebook, day 12: Minnesota under the lights

Not a ton of thoughts from the action, but Max Brosmer looked pretty good. More velo up close than I expected. Also keep seeing Jay Ward make plays when he's out there. The Vikings roster has reported to Eagan, and as a result, they have started their journey into the 2025 season. It starts at home in Minnesota, but they hope it ends on the road in Santa Clara, where they have a chance to raise the Lombardi Trophy for the first time. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O'Connell have new extensions, as do their assistants and coordinators. J.J. McCarthy is finally healthy and ready to take over the controls of a franchise that trusted him enough to stick with him when so many other options presented themselves. All in all, the coaching staff remains essentially unchanged, while the roster sees some position groups infused with youth and talent to solidify them. The 12th day of training camp has wrapped up, and there was a lot to breakdown ahead of a busy week for the team but there was one takeaway we wanted to share from The Athletic's Alec Lewis. Reports have been coming out about how Sam Howell has looked less than spectacular suring training camp. With interceptions making up a lot of his game, there have been rumblings about a potential reunion with Kirk Cousins, but the team may have their backup in camp already. Max Brosmer has been highlighted in a couple of camp notebooks, but as we get towards the first preseason game, he seems to be heating up. His performance this week, and how many snaps he gets, could be telling about the Vikings quarterback battle as the weeks go on.

Max Brosmer Already Turning Heads Inside MN Vikings Organization

There are a ton of intriguing storylines to follow entering Minnesota Vikings training camp later this month, many of which begin and end at the quarterback position. Not only will the Vikings enter camp for the third-straight season with a new QB penciled in under center, but this time it's 2024 No. 10 overall pick, JJ McCarthy. Behind the redshirt rookie, Minnesota has 24 y/o Sam Howell, 29 y/o Brett Rypien and undrafted 2024 Minnesota Gophers one-and-done quarterback, Max Brosmer. For now, the expectation is that Rypien and Howell will compete for the QB2 job this summer, while the former Gopher will ultimately be cut or moved to the practice squad. Credit: Matt Krohn-Imagn Images With months remaining between now and the start of the 2025 NFL regular season, a lot can change. But throughout OTAs and minicamp, McCarthy took the majority of reps at QB, while the rest were divvied out to Howell and Rypien. Brosmer, meanwhile, didn't get a ton of opportunities. Advertisement Related Headlines Max Brosmer impressing those inside TCO Performance Center The lack of practice reps early on for Brosmer, however, haven't dampened the staff's outlook on their 24-year-old UDFA signing. In fact, it sounds like Max has found ample opportunity to impress those inside TCO Performance Center. Vikings insider Alec Lewis (The Athletic), for example, came away intrigued by how much Vikings staffers are raving about Brosmer's work ethic, professional approach and just how quickly he's picking up on the intricacies of head coach Kevin O'Connell's offense. From the sounds of it, they aren't going to let him leave the building anytime soon. Max Brosmer, QB: Intriguing is the best way to describe his spring. Multiple staffers raved about his ability to pick up small intricacies. His professional approach and ability to process should keep him in the league for a while. Alec Lewis – The Athletic During his only season in Dinkytown, Brosmer finished with the second-highest single-season completion percentage in Gopher football history, at 66.5%. He also tossed for the 3rd-most yards (2,828) and 8th-most touchdowns (18). Had he joined PJ Fleck & Co one year earlier, there's no telling the records he would have set. Did Minnesota Vikings find a QB gem in the rough? Instead, we now get to enjoy him in a purple uniform. Unlike other Gopher QBs who have gotten an opportunity with the Vikings, they really seem to like what they see in Max — who they guaranteed $246,000 as a 2025 undrafted free agent. Advertisement It's no surprise that those inside the Minnesota Vikings organization have been impressed by Max Brosmer this summer. He came onto the U of M campus last summer with that same approach, raising the bar not just for his new Gopher teammates, but everyone inside the football program. Related: KOC Reveals First Impressions of QB Max Brosmer He's the ultimate leader — which is a prerequisite for playing quarterback at a high level — who sets a different kind of standard for himself and those around him. Now, it's a matter of talent and whether he has enough to make it in the National Football League. I'd argue he is highly underrated in that category too. Advertisement Of course, none of this means we'll see Brosmer active on MN Vikings game days anytime in the immediate future. But make no doubt, KOC & Co appear to get more and more bullish on Max Brosmer every day he spends in Eagan. Related Headlines

One Vikings QB is making a big first impression on coaches at OTAs

One Vikings QB is making a big first impression on coaches at OTAs The Minnesota Vikings quarterback room has been among the best in the league for several years now. Kevin O'Connell has done a tremendous job of developing younger players, maximizing veterans, and fixing players down on their luck. It has resulted in several players getting the most out of their careers, and now the hope is that their former top pick, J.J. McCarthy, can be his long-term project. It isn't just McCarthy though, it seems that O'Connell will also have another young quarterback vying for his attention. Purple Insider's Matthew Coller discussed how undrafted free agent quarterback Max Brosmer made a great first impression with coaches at OTAs. Coller spoke about his thoughts about the former Golden Gopher quarterback, saying, "The guy that's impressed me, just to tell you the truth, and I'm not trying to be that guy, but I keep liking what I see from Max Brosmer. Every time we see Max Brosmer out there (first during rookie mini-camp, and now today, he ran a drill at the red zone and had a couple of touchdown passes. . .I like what I've seen from Max Brosmer so far. I don't think he competes for QB2, but he might compete for QB3.' The Vikings quarterback room, without Brosmer, consists of McCarthy, Brett Rypien, and Sam Howell. It is not common anymore for teams to carry more than three quarterbacks across the active roster and practice squads. However, if Brosmer continues to play the way that Coller is describing, then he may be making life difficult for O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah when it comes to making decisions.

Broncos showing interest in another quarterback prospect

The Denver Broncos continue to scout third-string quarterback candidates leading up to the 2025 NFL draft. After previously meeting with Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma at Buffalo's pro day and hosting NDSU's Cam Miller on a pre-draft visit, the Broncos have had multiple virtual pre-draft Zoom calls with Minnesota's Max Brosmer, according to the Denver Post's Luca Evans. Brosmer (6-2, 217 pounds) spent the first five years of his college career at the FCS level, playing 36 games at New Hampshire. He transferred to Minnesota ahead of his final year of eligibility in 2024. Advertisement The 24-year-old prospect completed 66.5% of his passes for 2,828 yards and 18 touchdowns against six interceptions in 13 games with the Golden Gophers. He also rushed for five touchdowns last fall, but Brosmer is not a particularly mobile prospect. Brosmer is projected as a late-round or undrafted free agent prospect. If he lands with the Broncos, Brosmer could get an opportunity to compete for the QB3 job behind starter Bo Nix and primary backup Jarrett Stidham in 2025. The NFL draft will be held in Wisconsin from April 24-26. Denver holds seven picks this year.
