Kilmarnock keeper Max Stryjek jumped at Scotland return after missing playing during Polish stint

The stopper impressed during his debut in a win over Livingston on Wednesday night Killie no.1 Max Stryjek reckons a move to Ayrshire was just what he needed after a stint in his homeland turned sour. The 28-year-old was lining up against Ajax this time 12 months ago after signing for Jagiellona Bialystok in his native Poland. But he ended up playing just five times last term and jumped at the chance of a return to Scotland and regular football. Stryjek turned in an impressive debut against his former club Livingston on Wednesday and is confident he can thrive in the Scottish top flight once again. He said: 'For a debut, that was pretty good. The performance was not one of the very best I've ever seen but we got there and won 1-0. 'We are trying to implement a new style of play but the main point for us was to win the group stage. We have taken another step towards that, so it was pretty positive. 'At the back, we are still getting used to each other but I am feeling quite settled with the defenders.' He added: 'I played against Ajax this time last year, I made my debut against them in the Europa League. 'But it wasn't a busy year for me; I played five games. I obviously was disappointed that I wasn't getting enough game time. 'There was a chance for me to get to the highest division in Scotland, so I took that opportunity to enjoy my football again. I am really looking forward to it. I missed having games of football so much in my life. I was involved but I wasn't playing. It was really frustrating for me.' Stryjek played second fiddle in the first game as Eddie Beach kept a clean sheet against Brora Rangers but he appears set to be first choice for the league campaign. While he did himself no harm with a terrific debut, he insists he's not reading too much into it, saying: 'It's the manager's decision. I am coming out to perform and coming out to give my best. That's all I can control. 'There are people within the club who are going to look for competition but it's not my choice. 'The manager is making the decision. Of course, it helps that I know Scottish football well. I know what I am coming into and know the expectations from people, I know how the league works. 'I had other options but I really wasn't interested in going back to League One, League Two teams. I wanted the highest division and this opportunity came up. I decided to take it. I didn't want to stay back home in Poland. I won't make any more comments about Poland, put it that way.' He added: 'I lost a bit of weight, I feel confident, I feel good and I still feel I can enjoy myself a bit more. I feel a bit more relaxed because I actually missed football so much.'

'Delighted' to win but Kettlewell wants improvements

Kilmarnock manager Stuart Kettlewell says his side must improve despite securing a narrow League Cup win over Livingston on own-goal from Mo Sylla on 31 minutes was the difference between the teams, but Livingston could have taken something back to West Lothian were it not for several outstanding saves from Killie goalkeeper Max has now won both of his competitive outings as Kilmarnock boss, but he said they conceded too many chances and were "slack" in possession. "That's what we came here for," Kettlewell told BBC Scotland. "We're trying to top the group."It's about us trying to become better and I think we can play a lot better. We gave up too many opportunities and at times we were very slack on the ball."We had our goalie to thank with one or two stops and we need to test them a wee bit more. That all sounds negative - I'm delighted with the win and another clean sheet."Killie captain Brad Lyons came off with an injury in the second half, but Kettlewell downplayed any fears over the Northern Irishman's fitness."I'm hoping it's nothing too serious. He definitely tightened up."
