Kaizer Chiefs face stiff competition for dazzling Nzengeli
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of highly-rated winger Maxi Mpia Nzengeli, but face stiff competition from Moroccan heavyweights Wydad Athletic Club and other African giants.
The 25-year-old DRC international has lit up the Tanzanian Premier League this season, netting five goals and contributing nine assists for Young Africans SC. His form hasn't gone unnoticed, especially at Naturena, where Chiefs are believed to be seriously monitoring his situation.
Nzengeli joined Yanga in July 2023 on a two-year deal from AS Maniema Union. And instantly made his mark by helping the club secure the league title. With back-to-back championships now in sight, the versatile midfielder is set to become a free agent at the end of the current campaign.
His dazzling displays have put him just behind another Kaizer Chiefs target, Azam FC playmaker Feisal Salum, in the assist rankings. Salum has tallied 13 assists this season, while Nzengeli follows closely with nine.
Despite Yanga's hope of renewing his contract, sources indicate the two parties have yet to reach an agreement. 'Talks are ongoing,' a source close to the club revealed, 'but nothing has been finalised.'
With no deal in place and time running out, Nzengeli has become a hot prospect across the continent. Chiefs, who are desperate to bolster their creative options ahead of the 2025/2026 season. They see the Congolese star as a valuable addition to their squad.
A source with intimate knowledge of the negotiations confirmed. 'Naturena has been seen as a possible destination if he decides against staying at Yanga.'
Amakhosi face a fierce battle, though, with an unnamed Egyptian Premier League side and now Wydad AC joining the race for his signature. Wydad's entry adds pressure to Chiefs' ambitions
According to Sportswire , Wydad Athletic Club have already opened exploratory talks with Nzengeli's representatives. The Moroccan outfit recently signed Stephane Aziz Ki from Yanga and are keen to raid the Tanzanian champions once again.
