30(ish) Wirecutter Clothing and Accessory Picks for Going Back to School

Levi's straight-leg jeans got a lot of love from the panelists in our testing for our guide to women's jeans. The Levi's Premium Wedgie Straight Fit Women's Jeans earned the highest score in testing because we found them comfy and flattering across a wide range of body types. The 501 Original Fit jeans also tested exceptionally well with our panelists. Plus, for just under $100 a pair, these durable jeans are more than fairly priced. These jeans have a long, lean '90s cut, and they come in three inseams. They're not as high-quality as our other picks, but they're priced right, and they go on sale often. The slim, curve-hugging Gap High Rise '90s Straight Jeans look and feel great, even though their construction isn't as high-quality as what we've seen on some of our other recommendations. But they cost less than $100 and are often on sale, so they're one of our most budget-friendly picks. Thanks to their ultra-high rise and floor-grazing length (they come in three inseams), these wide-leg jeans are dramatic and visually elongating. They're an exceptional value, too. Just note that they run a bit large in the waist and are likely to stretch. If you like a wider-leg jean, we also have a Levi's recommendation for that. Made from 100% cotton selvedge denim that's soft and easy to care for, this pair is a comfortable choice whether you're mowing the lawn or hitting the town. Not too slim and not too wide, these gently tapered jeans have a just-right straight leg that's flattering and versatile. These two picks did well across the board with our testers, and they're two of our more affordable recommendations from our guide to the best men's jeans. But the material does feel a bit slick. We also recommend the Wrangler Cowboy Cut Jeans, which have a unique straight-leg cut that fits over boots but are not bootcut jeans. These roomy pants cut a different figure than most men's pants and can be easily dressed up or down across seasons. Jeans are tried-and-true. Whether you get them in white or another color, low-top or high-top, these shoes work with just about any look. They may not offer ample support, and they tend to visually elongate feet, but we love these shoes anyway. You can go sporty with the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L, or you can opt for something a bit more chic, like Everlane's The ReNew Transit Backpack. Simplicity is what makes this bag cool, and it comes in a plethora of colors and patterns, whether you're looking to stand out or blend in. This rake is sturdy, well balanced, favored by professional landscapers, and good for years of use. It's well built, though it might be a little heavier than rakes made with bamboo. Fall leaf cleanup is prime time for a fan rake, but it's useful year-round for everything from cleaning up lawn clippings to gathering cuttings from overgrown hedges. We like the Ames Jackson Hardwood/Steel Handle Steel Leaf Rake because it's surprisingly sturdy for the price, and the steel tines have enough give to easily comb through thick grass while still snagging loads of yard waste. If your yard has a lot of tree cover, you'll probably break down and buy a leaf blower at some point. Even then, you'll still find ways to use your old rake. You might also want a bow rake. This type of rake has shorter, stiffer tines than a fan rake, which makes it excellent at smoothing out a bed full of mulch. For finer material, like finished compost or soil, you can flip it around and use the backside for the same task. Somehow, we don't have a bow rake recommendation at Wirecutter, but we have a few avid gardeners and homesteaders on staff who say that they've never noticed much difference between any of the bow rakes they've used, apart from the benefits of a lightweight, durable fiberglass handle. This self-propelled lawn mower has a battery that runs for an hour, and it easily mows down overgrown grass. It also spares you the noise, emissions, and maintenance of a typical gas mower. $620 from Walmart May be out of stock This category almost seems too obvious to include, but if you have grass, you need a way to cut it, and the best tool for most lawns is a battery-powered lawn mower. A good cordless mower is much better than any gas option: It doesn't need fuel, it doesn't emit exhaust, and it requires minimal maintenance. In our tests, we found that the Ego LM2156SP Power+ 21″ Select Cut XP Mower was great in just about every way: steering, charging, run time, and mowing power. You might want to choose a different format if you have a very small or very large lawn, but most people should start their search here. Mowers can't reach everywhere in your yard, and that's where a string trimmer comes in. It's the quickest way to clean up overgrown grass along fences and around posts or knock down an overgrown but otherwise unmowable area. And most string trimmers let you reuse the same battery and handle with a load of other powered yard tools, such as hedge trimmers, pole saws, tillers, and more, so you'll get a lot of mileage out of the initial purchase. The Ego ST1511T Power+ 15″ Powerload String Trimmer was among the strongest and quietest string trimmers that we tested, and Ego's battery platform (which also works with our mower pick) is truly excellent. Light Packers Are Obsessed With This $14 Bar Soap Bag. I Found Out Why.
To determine if the Matador soap bag really dried soap faster than other methods, I conducted three tests comparing it with several alternatives (a disposable sandwich bag, a silicone bag, and a plastic case). In each test, I submerged Dove bars1 in water for 15 minutes and then let them dry to varying degrees before I put them in their containers. I conducted several tests to see which container dried soap the fastest. Maria Adelmann/NYT Wirecutter In two of the three tests, after hours of drying time, the bar soap from the Matador bag was deemed driest, but only marginally so. In the third test, the bars were not appreciably different from each other. (For the two tests where it wasn't immediately obvious which soap was driest, I had a volunteer blindly rank them.) In one test, I put the bars in their containers soaking wet. After 18 hours, none of the bars, including the one in the Matador bag, had fully dried. In two of the three tests, the soap from the Matador bag was driest, but only marginally so. So for a week, I showered with two bars of soap, one of which went into the plastic sandwich bag and one of which went into the Matador soap bag. This is where the Matador bag really stood out. The bag and the soap inside it always dried before my next shower, while the interior of the sandwich bag and the soap inside never completely dried, even after one 48-hour stint. Maria Adelmann/NYT Wirecutter I also hated the feeling of pulling the soap out of the slimy, gunky sandwich bag, which I fought the urge to replace over the course of a week. Meanwhile, the Matador soap bag, with its easy-to-rinse opaque exterior, always looked clean. Any gunk inside was hidden from view and totally dry when I needed my soap. Interestingly, Matador's instructions say that the soap will dry faster when the bag is exposed to air, but I didn't find much of a difference in drying time between putting the Matador bag on the counter versus in a toiletry bag. My real-world experience lines up with that of deputy editorial director Maxine Builder, who has owned the Matador soap bar bag for almost a year and uses it to hold her shaving bar, even when she showers at home. Most of the time, she doesn't even think about the bag. 'I seal the bar of soap up after using it, even when it's sopping wet, and when I open it up later, it's dry and ready to go, neither slimy nor soft and mushy,' Maxine says. It's kind of pricey for a simple bag, she admits, but she thinks it looks and feels nicer than a plastic case.
